None of this precludes a value-added strategy. Yes, as I said previously I encourage spending money to re-sign your own guys. You are inherently at an advantage in that market. In all seriousness though, when was the last time the Giants signed an outside FA to a big-money contract???
I never advocated trading multiple picks. Bowe is a free agent at years end. Or you can trade Moore and a 5th or something to make sure we get him now.
I don't think this points inherently change things, though. Specifically: B. We have a significant amount of cap space, but there are a lot of heavily contributing players who are free agents, and appropriate retention might take up a large majority of that space. C. While it would be nice to give Tannehill more weapons, I'm not sure his career prospects are hurt by not providing them to any specific degree. There is no specific degree of urgency to get him a specific quality of receiving threat. F. I don't believe you can really say that Wide Receiver is a hole above all else that needs to be filled in free agency. Mid to high end free agency is inherently unreliable(most acquisitions will fail to perform to expected levels on their new team), and you will almost certainly pay a cost that is higher than the talent level of the player. Drawing from this well too often is problematic. I don't think it's controversial to say that the most successful teams rarely engage in this area, are judicious in re-signing their own players, and focus on signing bargains and the draft. I don't think there is anyone so extraordinary in free agency at wide receiver that they are worth incurring that inherent free agent premium and possible failure, you're probably better off drafting wide receiver(s) than anything. I've got no idea. The Giants have let several quality wide young wide receivers walk in the past but Cruz might be too difficult to replace in the Giant's eyes.
Players get signed for what they're currently worth. If you know in advance that a player will be performing above his salary then he'd be signing for a higher salary to begin with. Essentially what it seems like you're saying is to sign underperforming, less-certain guys at a lower cost with the hopes they start performing at a higher level to maximize their value. IMO, the draft is where you grab your players who perform above their salary, where as FA represents buying equal value for production if it's feasible, but that doesn't mean spending $50 million on one player if spreading among 4 players translates to greater overall production. In our case, I agree completely about the value-added aspect, and what teams like Oakland & Washington have done in the past has baffled me. I agree and disagree with this. Firstly, there are many teams who would be missing production if they weren't currently paying for it. I don't think it matters if it's their own player or not b/c there comes a time where, if they want to keep that player's production, they're gonna have to pay him for it. Secondly, there are certain positions where I believe you can't "make up that production elsewhere", and IMO the receiver unit is one of those positions. I agree.... but at the same time I don't feel that paying a few highly productive players what they're worth will ruin the team's value-added. Ultimately how we draft will determine that IMO. If we draft well there will be less future need to spend money in FA, and at the same time it'll allow us to add some productive pieces if needed [like signing a premium receiver] w/o leaving us hamstrung in the future.
A free agent that will command top dollar. No thanks. That won't get it done. They will command at least a second.
This isn't necessarily true. Players get signed for what the market dictates. Unfortunately in free-agent markets, the team the player has played for has a lot more information than the other teams. You don't need to know anything in advance, you just need to know more than the other teams.
Does that change the fact that they have no qualms about signing guys to big money contracts? Your point was about getting greater value than what you're paying for, and in that regard I don't think the Giants will refrain from paying JPP or Cruz exactly what they're worth. If their production is of great value to NY then why would it be of less value to a team like Miami signing them instead? To answer your question, NY signed Plaxico for $25.0M, and he was a significant contributor to their SB team.
Rolle is a good counter-example here. I'm not sure ab Canty, IIRC that deal didn't have much guaranteed.
Not necessarily considering the final say is up to the player. Plus the team must be financially capable of re-signing him and have the need to do so. If there's enough talent at the position to be productive w/o him, then re-signing him to a high dollar contract would obviously be a mismanagement of their cap. Such is the likely case with Greg Jennings (even if health isn't an issue).
I agree.... but at the same time I wouldn't prioritize my own guy if I believed that money wasn't better served else where. I wouldn't necessarily want to limit my resource pool to just 1 team when there are 31 others available, but hopefully we draft well enough to where we want to keep our own guys.
Looks like he might be on his way. Bowe headed to Ft lauderdale http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?72773-Bowe-on-his-way-to-Ft-Lauderdale
Wait! Dwayne Bowe! I'm not fanning through 11 pages of comments can someone just shed some light on this? Are we in talks to get him? Is there a trade brewing? Or is he just visiting Florida? I mean please don't play with my Miami Dolphin emotions!
FIXED... It's BS people.. Things were blown out of context according to this http://www.thephinsider.com/2012/10...t-in-dwayne-bowe-trade-talks-with-kansas-city
Wonder if this mean Gaffney isn't going to make it... Unless we go with Hartline, Gafney, Bess, Bowe and two reserves... I like that actually alot..
I was answering the question, not disputing your point. The successful teams generally shy away from signing big FA contracts, I'm with you 100% on that one.
any newly acquired WR has to be familiar with plays, adjust routes & acquire a feel for the QB. doubt that he'll play against the jests. would however resolve the WR issue, giving us a forth viable threat in the stable, a major step on the offensive side of the ball. got to let the front office & coaches see if this is actually a good deal for the organization. not done until there is a signed contract. they'll make the right decision. Miami by 3
Not going to happen. This whole thing started because Sedano mentioned the rumors to Jason Cole..................all Jason Cole said was that Bowe would make sense.....that's it. Sedano blew it up into Cole was reporting such and such. I don't see Miami dropping picks for WR's until they see who is going to be available in free agency and what's shaping up draft wise. Plus they simply can't right now because they don't have the cap room.
I just read in a tweet he was boarding a plane to Miami. who knows? like I said: the organization knows best.
Not photoshoped. http://www.flightclubny.com/p.php?fc=ny&c=sale&i=041683 Probably the most popular sneaker released in the past few years. Means nothing really.

Out of curiosity, how did Chambers do the year we traded him to SD? That was one of the trades during the season that I can remember.
Yah cause he lives down here and he's on a bye. Folks need to stop freaking out every time a player takes a flight HOME.
