Purely speculation. Jason La Canfora even stated "people I've talked to say Gruden is at the top of his list when the time comes." <-- basically. Jason never said it came from Ross directly... so it's just word of mouth.

 

Okay, but why would he say that with Sparano still the HC?

I'm okay with that. Gruden seems to understand that this has become a pass-first league. The key will be whether he/they install a good GM to replace Ireland and who will his defensive coordinator be?
-keep our front 7 on defense + Vontae Davis, purge the rest
-keep Long, Pouncey, WRs, Clay, D Thomas, maybe Fasano, purge the rest

 

Well, he'll get a chance to talk to Gruden in about two weeks.

 

I'm not so sure I am okay with it... IF we are in a position to draft Luck. I don't trust Chucky to do it. He likes Veterans too much, from what I can remember. So, as long as he has no GM power, I could be okay with it.

 

Landry Jones probably wants to be a Dolphin now. Supposedly he'll be going with a spread offense. Not a bad idea with a better line.

 

This organization needs to do what the Miami Heat did in 1995 I think with Pat Riley.

Lure in a football genius, give him the keys to the franchise and the Head coaching position, complete control over everything, and let him do his thing. Choose staff, players, whatever.

Unless a team has already invested into a franchise QB, there is no way any team is passing on Luck. It's just not happening. Besides, JG seemed to really love Luck when he did commentary during the Standford bowl game.

Although Gruden has gotten the rep of not developing young QB (Simms comes to mind) he has certainly gotten the best out of journeymen like Brad Johnson, Brian Griese, and Jeff Garcia. I'd like to see him with a young stud like Luck.

We did that in 1996 with Jimmy Johnson. We tried again in 2005 with Nick Saban. We gave Parcells the keys to the kingdom too, except he didn't coach. What this organization needs to do is follow the model of organizations like Green Bay, Philly, etc... d

 

A huge if but if he can get a good personnel guy and not want all the control, I'm okay with it.

 

I'm not even kidding. I'm getting such a strong sense Miami will draft Landry Jones it isn't even funny. I mean seriously I can see this being some kind of freak numbers offense with a heavy reliance on an up the middle running game. Did you see Gruden moaning and his love for big running backs yesterday? I could easily see a downhill, no huddle spread attack as Gruden's choice for a NFL base offense. I don't doubt for a second that a no-huddle attack in the Miami heat along with a fast speedy 4-3 man cover scheme could work in Miami.

Do you know a guy called Bill Parcells? THats what we tried to do before,...............and here we stand today, looking to move on. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

 

He is the one retread HC that I like, I think he has not lost his fire sitting in the broadcast booth.

This is one of the reasons why I do not want Cowher, and I do not want Gruden with GM responsibilities as he sucks at them.

But still we are 0-4, I still like Sparano, so to me this is premature as the very same thread can be posted in December and whichever Coach would be no closer to be hired.

 

Jimmy Johnson was actually building us a great team. he just quit.

Parcells quit 2-3 years into it.

Saban quit after 1-2 years too

It's not the strategy that's to blame.....it's the guys they chose to do it with. Nobody would have guessed Saban would be a quitter like that.

 

I actually think Grudens time as an analyst will help him as a coach.

 

It's not the STRATEGY that's at fault.

It's the guys that were chosen. Parcells was more interested in playing golf than the Dolphins. In Bill's first year here, he was at every practice on his golf cart..... then he just quit and left.

Jimmy Johnson was a burnout. He already won so many championships at college and the NFL level, that he just decided he didn't want to work 16 hours a day anymore. He had no "fire" left in him to prove anything.

These guys were quitters because we got them at the end of their careers when they really should have just retired instead of signing onto the Dolphins.

Saban was a complete shock to everyone.

Blame the guys chosen, not the strategy.

Jimmy Johnson was overrated and a major reason why we are in the mess we are in today.

Jimmy was responsible for Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain (who if I remember correctly, was converted into a CB by Jimmy Johnson)..........seriously the man was doing a great job. Yeah, the offense needed more pieces. That is true.

Given more time, Jimmy would have built an elite team.

 

That is silly to blame him for Collins and Green. Green had major injuries two years in a row, which is hardly something Johnson could have controlled. Collins was, what, a 5th or 6th round pick? Considering how much talent he had, it was more than worth the risk. He was playing very well before he got hurt and then got stupid (again).

Feel free to blame JJ for John Avery, James Johnson, Larry Shannon, etc. all you want, though. I do feel Johnson has gotten a bad rap over the years, a lot of which is undeserved, probably largely due to bringing Wannstedt aboard and for almost quitting and then quitting a year later. He inherited a pretty tough situation, which a lot of fans tend to overlook. He had to deal with Marino in the twilight of his career and couldn't even entertain the idea of bringing in another QB lest he be lynched and/or ran out of town. He inherited a horrible salary cap situation and had to let go of Bryan Cox, Troy Vincent, Irving Fryar and Marco Coleman all in one offseason. The fact that he was able to acquire Zach Thomas, Taylor, Madison, and Surtain all in two drafts is pretty remarkable, imo.

 

The offense needed more than just pieces... Dan wasn't going to be around much longer even if Jimmy stayed, yet I can't remember him looking for Dan's future replacement. On defense he did a pretty damn good job, but on offense... ugh.

 

Well, Yatil Green gave Jimmy hope that he would recover so we passed on Randy Moss in the 98 draft remember? oh god.......Marino to Moss =( that's not all Jimmy's fault......

Didn't Jimmy want to get rid of Marino? I am not sure if I remember this correctly, but I seem to remember something about him feeling "saddled" by having to use broken down old Marino instead of bringing in his own QB. not sure though.

anyway, Jimmy built an elite defense in the amount of time Parcells and co. have been here. Jimmy would have fixed the offense too, eventually. BUT Jimmy was burned out and no longer felt the need to keep trying. He already had rings.... his heart wasn't in it.

Can't blame the philosophy of handing over the keys to a football guru just because we got saddled with 2 "end of their careers" guys in Johnson/Parcells who quit on us........ and Saban....who is a lying douche.

 

Even if he felt "saddled" he still should have drafted and groomed a successor. I know one mistake Jimmy made and that was to take away Dan's ability to change plays at the line. Jimmy and Dan didn't get along, especially in that first year... that I do remember.

 

That is true. Big failure by Jimmy and the Dolphins org. to forget to bring in a young QB.....have our young QB in the shadows, learning from Marino's final few years....

I think one of the reasons was because the city of Miami and every Dolphin fan in the world wanted Marino to win a SB before he retired. So every draft pick and effort was spent on doing that... winning "now"......

I don't know the real reason though. Jimmy definitely was not in this team for the long haul.

 

Because of Yatil Green's rehab going so well.......we passed on Randy Moss in the draft ;/ I can blame Jimmy a little for that, but it's not really his fault. Yatil Green's injuries were freak accidents.

 

Except for being a 4 time champion in college and the NFL. And Probably would of had a 5th. Barry won a SB in his stead.

Jimmy is not the reason we're in the mess we're. In fact, despite the disappointments, he let us be competitive for 8 years because of the talent he drafted. He may have missed on some picks,but let's not pretend that everyone hits. Bill Belichick, who is one of the greatest coaches of all-time misses the vast majority of the time. I'd take Jimmy over any coach we've had in the modern era.

 

I do remember some of the things Gruden said at the start of the Phins/Pats game about wanting to see Miami and the stadium crowd back to how it was like in the past.

But...I don't think he'll be coaching. IF he does want to come back, then I'd expect him to be in Miami, it makes sense. Just feel like he'll be back in the MNF booth in 2012 though.

 

I don't recall hearing anything like that at all. What I've always heard is that even if Johnson had stayed at the original pick in '98, the pick would have been Vonnie Holliday and not Moss-with no consideration what so ever to anything going on with Green. He also said that Larry Shannon was going to be as good or better than Moss. Lulz.

Dez Bryant has yet to prove he is a Randy Moss.

Even though Randy Moss was a basket case and other than the time when he is throwing a hissy fit, the guy was a very hard worker.

Those are two different models. In Philly, the keys to the kingdom are in Andy Reid's hands. Green Bay is your more traditional GM/HC set up.

I think what the Dolphins could do with Gruden is different. I don't think Gruden is interested in the personnel aspect of the football operations. He's a film junkie, and right now, he's a guy who is satisfying a thirst for knowledge about various ideas that he is taking from the college game. I think too many people are looking at Gruden and looking at his history, saying that he's a veteran quarterback, west coast offense guy and assuming that is what he will be when he comes back to the NFL.

Personaly, I think Jon Gruden is dead serious about bringing a spread offense centered around a dual threat quarterback to the NFL. When you hear him talk about the spread systems that Chip Kelley and Urban Meyer run and the pace that Chip Kelly and Gus Malzahn run things at, he's like a kid with a new toy. This stuff excites him. I think it excites him much more than dictating every aspect of an organization the way Bill Parcells does, Bill Belichick does, or Bill Cowher wants to do.

I think Gruden is legitimately interested in changing the way people think about the NFL and being a beacon of innovation in a league that is very dull from an innovative standpoint at this time. To me, Gruden is the type that is saying, "You know what. This is the type of quarterback high school is producing for college, and subsequently, college is currently producing for the pros. Why try to fit the square peg into the round hole by making them traditional NFL passers? Why not bring the ideas from the college game that are making these quarterbacks successful as dual threats, such as the zone read option and inverted veer in the running game and triangle reads/half field reads in the passing game?"

It may not work. This style may ultimately cause you to go through a new quarterback every 3 to 4 years. I've always been on the other side of this argument, but at this point, I'm getting tired of seeing the same old stuff being run in the NFL. I'm ready to see someone try to shake up things and change the traditional way of thinking. Maybe it is Miami's constant struggles and inconsistency trying to be a pound it out, run the ball, play defense team over the past 15 years that has forced me to change my views on the way I think Miami should do things. Part of this is because I'm thinking the Dolphins should have a football style that fits with the style of Miami - exciting, up tempo, and relentless.

I think Gruden could be the guy that brings that.

 

Why do you want to bring a coach who going to collect checks?

Cowher is my first choice..I think you need someone that is tough enough, who has a stong enough presense, a man who commands respect. to motivate the Miami Dolphin football player correctly..I think his personality and strengths are something that players in this town need.

 

Agreed...we need a strong, fundamentally sound coach who isnt power hungry. Cowher had a power struggle with Tom Donahue in Pitt and once Donahue was outed, Cowher got over the hump with his own personnel man who decided hey that Ben Roethlisberger is gonna be a good one. Cowher also comes from a culture where player development was first and foremost and its an area we have struggled in.

 

Except we've been there and done that... His formula isn't different from the last decade+ of Miami Dolphin football. And I honestly don't think he'll ever coach again. Why? He's accomplished everything and seems to love his job. Coaching may be a grind and challenge he doesn't want.

Gruden is still my #1 choice. The guy loves football. He lives and breathes it. He can coach his *** off and may have some new tricks up his sleeve.
