Braylon Edwards had 14 plays of 20+ yards out of 116 targets in 2010 (One play of 20+ every 8.2 targets) Brian Hartline had 10 plays of 20+ yards out of 73 targets in 2010 (One play of 20+ every 7.3 targets) Each had 4 drops in 2010 according to PFF.

We really should get Soliai on a long term deal. That $12 million doesn't sit right with me. We could use half that on someone else.
Supposedly they're ill at ease with giving him a long term contract, but unless there's new jargon in the CBA that discourages roster bonuses I wonder why they don't attempt a contract that affords them some protection if Soliai doesn't stay motivated or play well.

I'm not sure how you quantify the importance of a 20 yd play. "Directly help a team to win" is really just an undefinable and subjective label.
Marshall's contract is like that. His should be incentive laden and have limited team liability but a good pay ceiling.

what does that even mean? When you throw a jump ball to a guy who runs over or jukes a guy or two in route to a TD that breaks another team's back or wins the game, I'm pretty sure that "directly helps a team win". We went up 17-14 in the 3rd qtr after a long ball-controlled drive, and on the very next play Edwards scores on a 67 yard pass where he does most of the work? That's not directly helping a team win? I guess 16 TDs over 30+ yards doesn't impact games (and it didn't matter than he did this with average at best QB play).
I would be interested to find out where I can find the stats on "back breaking TDs" or "successful jukes". Again, all this subjective labeling logic can be used to say a lot of WRs were better than say, Larry Fitzgerald last season. I wonder what his "successful juke" to target ratio was

Actually, he led the Jets in receiving yards and Touchdowns(including running backs) in 2010, but only cause Holmes missed the first 4 games. Also had their longest reception of the year, 74 yards and most YAC. Wouldn't it be nice to take that from them? I still have doubts Ireland and co would do it.
No, its age and pricetag. Both players produced similarly. But Hartline is much cheaper and younger. There really isn't much reason to appropriate those type of resources for someone that isn't necessarily an upgrade, and a marginal one at best. Especially when you consider Hartline still has a good likelihood of improving. If you're argument has devolved to "he's scored more TDs", then you're essentially arguing that he should be our #1 WR.

Also read the Jets were done with him, then hear they aren't. On NFLN and ESPN all they talked about was how the Jets were frontrunners for Asomugha, with 49ers, Bucs, Texans, Cowboys all showing interest Who gets him....Eagles. After all that's happened, I'll just expect Edwards to go to the Jaguars.
I just hope those rumors are just that - rumors. And I hope we are being aggressive in our pursuit of Miller, he makes the most sense for this offense, not another wideout and one that is a headcase.

When neither is past their prime, then age has little relevance. True that Hartline is a lot cheaper, but Edwards is a more talented and dynamic receiver and to even the most obtuse observer should be seen as an upgrade to our offense. When Hartline works his way open, he generally catches the ball, but Edwards, as with Marshall, is open even when he is covered and can physically dominate any corner and just overpower them if need be to catch the ball. I seriously doubt we'll ever see much of that from Hartline. Good ol' Don Shula always made sure Marino was never lacking for top quality WRs. Once he say the Marks were done, he didn't waste any time and grabbed Fryar and Ingram to take their place. While there has been a lot of attacks on Edwards in this thread about his drops, and before 2010, they were warranted, but last season he was the Jets' most sure handed WR/TE with less drops than Cotchery, Holmes or Keller.

Yes, Edwards would most likely be a better basketball player. Fortunately, most NFL playbooks don't ask anyone to rebound. Again, the statistics indicate that despite Edwards' ability to "overpower" defenders, he doesn't make any more big plays than Brian Hartline. Most likely because physically overpowering a receiver of defender is against the rules, commonly referred to as "pass interference".
I took a minute to look up Edwards official stats. http://www.nfl.com/player/braylonedwards/2506342/profile He'd be nice to have but I question where he would fit in and I'd be concerned with exactly how much production you'd get for the money you'd have to spend to get him. It's really nothing more than a 'cost - benefit analysis'. If his price tag is reasonable I probably grab him, but we do have bigger needs on the team.
