Russ is spot on in his analysis of Newton.

I have intelligence issues...Mechanical issues..and Release issues with Newts..
Iam lookin for a qb with a certain release and follow thru,..it is where tru accuracy is achieved.
and that ever so important QB speed of motion, and QB athleticism.
Once I narrow it down to those men, I'll go to the mental side of that group. -
I want no part of Newton. I'd use a 3rd or 4th on him to become a TE and that's it (but we all know he'll be gone way before then just as we knew Gholston would be gone in the first 10 picks). I wouldn't mind spending a 5th or 6th on Tyrod Taylor and use him all over the field ala Brad Smith or Josh Cribbs.

Cam on the other hand....... we're talking about a guy who had to cheat on tests to pass (and that's just when he was caught- how about all the times he wasn't caught) and asking him to play probably the most difficult position in all of sports that requires constant football smarts and quick, precise analysis. If he's a door to door salesman, I ain't buyin it right now.
Cam will be overdrafted with too high of expectations to succeed early....... and then overwhelmed by the NFL game to where he loses any joy for it, and we see him fade away. IMO his physical gifts are oohing and aahing people similarly to how Jamarcus Russell's were. -
It was the "Cheat-sheet" he had STAPLED to the FRONT of his BCS tie wasnt it?
This kid is Vince Young without the wiggle in his hips. He falls forward EVERY running play I have seen in 3 games, and his passing SUCKS.
He is going to get absolutely ANNHILATED at the pro level. An MLB is going to tee off on his run and that's that...of course, it will have to be a pretty big MLB...but....ToddsPhins likes this. -

Somethin like Ingram... Devlin/yates/Dalton....Little...Tyrod Taylor..ToddsPhins likes this. -
IMO this sums up Cam:
interviewer: "Cam, you have 10 seconds to answer this question: 2+2 equals?"
Cam after 5 seconds: "four".
Interviewer: "Very good, Cam. You get a cookie."
Interviewer: "Cam, you have 2 seconds to answer the following question: 4+4 equals?"
Cam: "uhhhhhhhhhhh"..... bzzzzzt. -
Now that Blackmon & Weeden are going back to Ok St..... and Julio Jones will most likely be drafted before us, I don't see how we don't end up with Ingram unless we can trade back. I'd hate to take a left tackle at #15 and play him at RT. I'd personally be shocked if we drafted Mallett or Locker if Ross believes this is Sparano's lame duck year. The only other player who comes to my mind is Akeem Ayers, but I can't see taking him unless Ingram is off the board.
So if all that's the case, then I'd love to end up with Ingram, Little, and Tyrod...... especially if we could nab Mankins and a vertical threat like Santonio Holmes (and Ahmad Bradshaw since he wants out of NY). We already have a stud cast for moving the chains in between the 20's so IMO, if we can add a little lightening to it, we could become good pretty fast. Drafting those 3 guys would create some headaches or DC's to defend, don't you think. -

Its not like he's sleek afoot. He forces forward almost like a sheepish clydesdale. He's gonna get some SERIOUS snot-knockers doin that at the next level.ToddsPhins likes this. -
My honest assessment of Cam is:
In one ear, dad is telling him to take the money and run.
In the other ear, he has knowledgeable people telling him he'd benefit from another year in school.
The logic part of his brain is telling him: "Man, I got battered by the Ducks, so maybe I'm not quite ready for the NFL."
The other 99.9 & of his brain is saying: "I'm Cam mother f***in Newton! My talent's gotten me this far, and I won a Natl Championship with it. It'll get me by in the NFL too." He references his talent ALL THE TIME. "I'm blessed" blabidy blah blah. That sums it up right there. He constantly gives his credit to "what God gave him" rather than to how hard he busts his a$$. He does it in a way that sounds like he's almost making excuses for how good he is to where he appears uncomfortable taking the credit..... as if he feels he's only better than everyone else b/c he's more talented than everyone else. Major red flag IMO. If he worked his butt off like Andrew Luck or Kellen Moore do, then I don't think we'd be hearing the "I'm blessed" rationalization. Blessed works in college, but it won't fly in the NFL.
The biggest difference between Cam and Tebow is: Tebow says he's blessed but he dedicates 110% to making the most of his ability in everything he does..... and when Tim says "I'm blessed", it sounds more like out of humility b/c he sees himself as an equal to everyone and doesn't thrive on the attention. He rather thrives on the competition of the game. Newton projects more of a slacker image as far as life goes and uses his natural ability to fall back on (or as his escape). You'd never see Tebow involved in stolen laptops, cheating, or money scandals. He holds himself to a higher standard. I fear seeing Newton in a leadership role on a team full of professional men who are all counting on him.
Taking everything into consideration, I get the impression that Cam has visions of grandeur and is playing for a payday..... and once the rude awakening of the NFL hits him (along with its ridiculous responsibility), he's gonna collapse like Vernon Carey's beach chair. He's a passionate kid with a big heart & lots of emotion, so I can easily see his psyche taking a serious blow once he has an entire fan base criticizing every bad play and ESPN guys questioning his NFL career. Seriously, look at how much he eats up the cheers etc from Auburn fans. He freakin basks in the college limelight like few I've ever seen before..... and the kid loves playing for his fans. When he hits the wall his rookie year and fans start in on him, I could easily see him losing it mentally b/c of how much he lives for the attention.
He's Cinderella...... and the clock'll strike twelve once an NFL playbook is plopped in his lap (or shortly there after). -
Cam Newton didn't get as far as he did by being a slacker.
Is he a model citizen?
Doubtful.
Is he a gangsta thug?
Just as doubtful.
Does his game translate to the next level?
I think that is also just as doubtful.
BTW: I Imagine Tebow aint a sparkling clean boy scout either.
We just haven't heard about it. :shifty: yet....... -
:tongue2: -
lol @ Tebow. His idea of naughty is probably glancing at some perky nips in the frozen food isle. Just sayin. -
Ben Roethlisberger passed college classes by himself? Jay Cutler is really a Vanderbilt level mind? Michael Vick stayed eligible by himself at Va Tech?
Ahmad Brooks played for the rival high school when I was in high school and I can tell you there is no way he ever comprehended what went on in a UVA classroom.
I am making some assumptions, but I think you can agree that cheating on a test is not a good way to determine a person's football intelligence.
(Am I concerned he got caught? Yeah you got me there) -
Passing on a test?
Slick: I'm not going to bullsh*t you Pete. He ain't no brain surgeon aight. He took the SAT recently and scored a 520 out of a possible 1600.
Pete Bell: 520? You get 400 for just spelling your name correctly.
Slick: That's it, he messed up on his name. -
Can't wait till Cam Newton is drafted by the Miami Dolphins. He will dominate the NFL just like he dominated the SEC, the toughest conference in college football.

Cam Newton has poor mechanics.
Hearing someone say what I've seen all along only reinforces my argument.
Big project in the NFL. He better be handled carefully in his development.
I still see him as mediocre down to a possible bust.
We can ill afford to draft such a risk. -

I can't believe some people, who sat here a year ago and defended the likes of Mike Williams and Dez Bryant...are sitting here dinging Cam Newton on character concerns.
texanphinatic likes this. -
Last year I firmly believed that Williams & Dez's so called "character concerns" posed little threat, and I stated such and the reasons why IIRC. However, based on how I perceive & read Cam, I do feel that his individual "concerns" etc are troubling, especially considering he plays the most important, difficult, and demanding position on the field. -
-
My issues are that, having only seen 3 games mind you, he does NOT have the mindset, nor skill set to be a Pro QB. -
I'm not sure how your argument carries any weight when Williams & Dez became the top rookie WRs in the NFL, and I was right about them not being a problem. Besides, Williams is Williams, and Cam is Cam. They're entirely 2 different people, hence they all have to be treated individually.
You can put 10 guys in front of me with "character concerns" and more times than not I'll read them accurately and tell you which ones to worry about and which ones to not. Not boasting. Just being honest. The mental/psyche side of the game goes overlooked year after year after year. I also haven't said that I think he's a problem child; I think he's a good kid with a big heart if you read my post. However, I do tremendously question if he has what it takes to succeed when he ACTUALLY has to bust his *** in life and work hardcore for it for once.
If there are no concerns about Cam, then he should be taken 1st overall by Carolina, but that won't happen. You can't just assume he'll be all hunky dory just b/c you fall in love with his ability and COLLEGIATE performance. People made this mistake with JaMarcus Russell who was also one of the top rated high school prospects in the country, had the strongest arm at any level of football, massive size, and threw for over 3000 yards & 28 TDs his final season with the 4th best QB rating in the country (167). -
-
And for the record, I don't see Cam as a character concern kid. I see him as a talented player who may never live up to potential b/c he may never give the position 110% and b/c he potentially doesn't have the mental capacity for such a complex position. I also see him as a slightly immature person who might become overwhelmed mentally & psychologically at the next level when he's finally faced with serious adversity on a weekly basis, not to mention enduring fan criticism etc after he's been cherished like a God all season at Auburn. His Heisman trophy becomes meaningless, as does his Natl Championship. I also have concerns about how his game is affected when he can't run all over the field like he's used to.

That was one of the few reasons why I still think maybe Russel can be salvaged, let a DB blitz him, that would be like a bb hitting a battleship. -

Is he a finished , polished product? No. Does he have the skill set to get there? I think so.
What aspect is missing for you? I have seen 7-8 of his games this year , most more than once. Suffice to say I have been mentioning him as a possible QB for Miami for a while , I also stated he would likely go earlier than our pick , which I still think will happen.
To me there is a lot to work with if you feel he has the right attitude and commitment , size , arm , accuracy , athleticism , the ability to bring a team back to win from behind , multiple times , carry a team on your shoulders.
Do the positives outweigh the negatives? I think so , maybe Mami won't but some team early in the draft will , imo.
