Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested in Alabama on Monday for possession of a controlled substance, the Mobile Press-Register reported.
Mobile police spokeswoman Lori Myles said the substance was codeine syrup. Russell was arrested in his home early in the afternoon, Myles said.
Russell is scheduled to appear in court July 20.
After releasing Russell, the Raiders filed a grievance seeking to recoup aproximately $9.5 million of the $36.4 million that they paid the quarterback since 2007.
Russell has since been linked to the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets, the latter having expressed cursory interest in the former LSU quarterback.
Russell's Canadian Football League rights are owned by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, according to NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi.
