With the recent success of guys like Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, etc. as rookies why not start Tannehill and let him learn through experience? Given his familiarity with the offense, I think you have to be rooting for him to win the job.

 

I say let the kid start...his biggest flaw is he doesnt have experience. He isnt going to get that riding the pine and going to meetings. If you feel like that is experience, well the guy went to the QB meetings in college, so if that is experience to you, then he has 4 years worth.

 

If he wins the job in camp, then start him, if not, then don't.

It really is this simple, I don't quite get all the debate. See what the kid has got in camp, if he's ready then put him in, if not then put a clipboard in his hand.

 

Better yet. If he is tied with the others after competition, you give it to him.

 

It's a delicate balance. You put someone in before they are ready and the speed of the game might wreck them to the point they never recover. You put him behind an oline that can't block for ****, he gets hammered. He has no talent at WR either. It's tough. you've also gotta deal with idiot fans who love matt moore for his average play.

I say best senario is matt moore starts and sucks it up. Once season is lost, let tanny come in and get some reps and see if he handles the games speed. What will most likely happen IMO is that if healthy Gerrad wins the starting job and plays game manager for a 500 or sub 500 team until they put moore in because idiot fans think he's awesome. Tanny rides pine and we pick in the top 10 yet again, maybe get a stud WR.

He's 24 years old, Iam ready to start the proces on the field, let Moore start, see what happens, if things get out of hand, let the man play..so unless Moore is gonna lead to the playoffs I expect to see Tannehill mid season.

 

all of those rookie quarterbacks that got to start, throw matt ryan in there, were all coming into better situations in terms of the talent around them. The only exception you can make is newton and thats a big maybe because he had olsen and smith.

 

Well, look at it this way, toss THill in there at least we should have a good stable of running backs so the game on offense is not all left to him to win or lose, which is one of the reasons why Miller made so much sense to me.

 

With the addition of Martin our line should be significantly better. Not to mention Tannehill is mobile and has pretty good pocket presence. Like Padre said, the group of running backs is pretty good. The only major ? is the wide receivers and I don't think they are as bad as everyone says they are. At their worst they can't be much worse than what he had at A&M.

 

Two good points. I'll add that if the rest of the team doesn't believe that Tannehill legitimately beat out the two vets then it could effect their confidence in the coaching staff, and as a result, their play.

I agree with the idea of playing him when he demonstrates that he gives the team it's best chance to win, whenever that might be. The question for me is how do we marry the twin objectives of grooming Tannehill for the future and winning games in the present. There are Vets on the team who want to win NOW, they could care less about developing a QB. I'm sure Chad Henne can spin a few tales about how it feels to be in that spot, being handed the job against the wishes of his own teammates.

 

yeah, I like the martin draft pick but until he performs at an NFL level the line is a question mark. Obviously his WRs are better here than in college but he's also going to be up against NFL caliber players. all the speculation is fun for us on these message boards but we've gotta remember reality. We've got months before preseason even starts. Let's see how how all 3 of the quarterbacks fair. It tannehill gets it enough to the point he's making plays and isn't totally lost by the increased game speed I say give him the job. The disadvantage to this is the temptation to put moore or garrad back in if he doesn't do well.

 

I still don't feel like Henne ever got a fair shot due to our horrible coaching/play calling and lack of talent around him. That's a whole different debate now because obviously his time ran out here and I just don't want to see that happen to Tannehill because the kid does show a lot of talent. You've gotta trust the coaching staff to know when he's ready and to stick with him through the growing pains.

vets that want to win now with this team...well they're stupid if they think that's going to happen. If they're not on board for 3-5 year rebuilding process either ask for a trade or play your *** off to get on another team when your contract runs out. I'm not saying it's impossible to shrink that time down to say maybe 2 years worth of rebuilding but it's not likely. The only top level talent I see on this team that should be concerned is Wake but I'm sure he's more worried about getting paid first given his production and path he had to take to make it this far.

This. I'll admit, I was a bit puzzled initially with the Miller pick. But after digesting all of the draft and offseason moves, you have to come away realizing Miller was a great value pick. Obviously he's got a role into the future, but he can offer some immediate impact as a kick/punt returner, and as a change of pace back. I could see packages where Miami has he and Reggie Bush on the field where one or the other is in the backfield and the other in the slot or out wide.

I know Mayock touched on this point, and someone else did as well, can't remember who, but both of them said that Miller and Daniel Thomas offer a nice back back, little back combination. Reggie Bush is so athletic that you can use him as the little back when you want and you can also use him as a satellite player like the Saints did while keeping Thomas or Miller on the field as well.

I think it was Desides who posted this in another thread, but it's interesting to see the weapons Miami as. At RB you have Bush, Thomas, and Miller. At WR you have Bess, Hartline, Gates, Naanee, Cunningham, and at TE you have Fasano, Clay, and Egnew. Plus, Miami's got extra players to pick and choose from with Steve Slaton, Jerome Messam, Marlon Moore, Roberto Wallace, Rishard Matthews, Jeron Mastrud, and the Les Brown kid. Obviously there's not room on the roster to keep them all, but I think it's a good problem for Miami to have.

Tannehill has a lot of Tony Romo in him, and I mean that in the best sense possible. He does very well rolling out, keeps his head down field and has a deft touch with the ball. He also has similar mechanics and arm strength to Romo. Lets hope hes as prolific.

Watching some more tape of him today, I was surprised just how strong his arm is. He can really put some heat on the ball on slants and crossing patterns. He doesnt have as much velocity on the out patterns towards the sideline, but not many QB's can make those passes look so easy.

 

The WRs already had a year with Moore and know what he can do. Tannehill knows the playbook and he will either earn the respect of his teammates in camp that he's worth taking the learning lumps with this year or he isn't ready yet. Philbin only needs to read the locker room.

I don't think there'll be any QB controversy. It'll be pretty cut and dry one way or another imo.

There are three plays in a row, start at 2:45 and watch 3 in a row, his anticipation is there, the velocity is there,and the accuracy..

 

That was one of two main things I took from his Gruden episode. He could throw the deep out very well. He even had several throws on tape during his time with Gruden that were from the opposite hash, which is even further away than it is in the NFL. Those throws were pretty impressive. He threw the deep comeback pretty well, which leads me to believe he can throw the skinny post and seam routes well as they're somewhat similar throws. Aaron Rodgers made a killing by throwing skinny posts to receivers out wide when they had one-on-one coverage. That throw's easier for a QB to make than a deep comeback or stop route, which Tannehill did a lot of at A&M.

The second thing was that Gruden mentioned that only Andrew Luck and Tannehill were the two quarterbacks that he'd seen make a seven step drop since he's started this whole Gruden Camp Special. That to me was impressive, as well as Tannehill's knowledge of the west coast system. It's no wonder that he knew the playbook within three hours of arrival.

He's obviously had some struggles, let's not beat around the bush there. But, I think if you play him from day one, let him take his lumps, and learn from experience, this kid could be very good.

 

I'd like to play him from day 1 as well Ro..it's going to be a very quick pass oriented system, ( so says the receivers), So let's get him on the field and see how he reacts, protect him somewhat with his reads, and not be afraid to punt in the first year..

 

The trend has been rookie quarterbacks being successful early, but the thing is that most all of them haven't improved since their rookie season. That's problematic and I'm inclined to believe that there's a bad habit type aspect.

I think we could start Tannehill early, but I think to do it safely you'd have to have the running game clicking very well, and then base a lot of your passing game off of the run game like a Shanahan-style WCO and maybe incorporate some zone read stuff.

 

again you miss the point. this team is not ready to win. there are too many holes to compete with the big boys in the AFC namley the PATS texans steelers and ravens. You're going to have to get by one, if not more of them to get out of the AFC. Playing their asses off and struggling to get a wild card next year is not my idea of success. The team is rebuilding wether the FO admits it or not and honestly the only Veteran that's old enough and talented enough for me to worry about in this situation is wake.

Players like dansby, bell (already gone) and well....**** i cant think of any others will be too old once we are a winning team. Sure miracles can happen but theyre miracles for a reason.

 

I do not care if you think the team is ready to win or not. I do not care if the team is not talented to win or not. I do not want veterans who think that they are in a rebuilding year and accept losing. I want veterans who want to win every game. I think it is asinine to call veterans who think they are going to win games stupid.

Chances are Miami will not be a winning team next season, however it is not out of the realm of possibility. People act like we are still in the 80s or 90s when the great teams are so talented that it is nearly impossible to catch up. However we live in an age where an unbalanced Patriot team (great offense, pathetic defense) were beat by a mediocre (by superbowl standards) Giants team. A Giants team that only made it to the superbowl because of a team in a similar situation as Miami fumbled a punt return.
