You be the judge. I can't get the links to work, but if you go to Seeqpod and search for Coldplay - Viva La Vida and Joe Satriani - If I Could Fly, you can hear them one after the other.

This is the second time Coldplay has been sued. Surprisingly, neither time was for it being downright ****ty music.

I actually liked "Violet Hill." But generally, yes ... they're Radiohead-lite.

Yeah, this guy at work kept telling me I needed to listen to them. I listened to about 20 seconds of 5 different songs and realized that they are a very very ****ty band

Here is a nice mix of both to let you decide: (Personally I like Coldplays version....but both are interesting when overlapped)

I think there's so much music that it's hard to come up with something that sounds completely original; but with that being said Coldplay absolutely ripped off Joe.

Wasn't there someone (the guy from CCR) that got sued by his record label for making music that sounds like himself?

Wow, I didn't know they were getting sued. I've heard Coldplay before, they have a few songs I like, but they don't hold a candle to Joe Satriani IMO. I saw him once on the G3 tour, man that guy can jam. And when he got onstage at the end with Yngwie and Eric Johnson and they played for the last 25 minutes, I thought Heaven and Earth had collided. He's jamming with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony and the Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. They've got a side project going called Chickenfoot. With that kind of talent, I can't imagine that it would suck.:knucks:

    Coldplay lifted Joe Satriani.

That vocal hook was without a doubt written to that guitar line.

    Quite eerie.........

    Made me think of this.......

I am a lawyer. I deal with copyright issues all the time.

What surprises me the most about this matter is that Coldplay's publisher and Satriani's publisher didn't come to some settlement before filing the lawsuit.

The way these things work is that whoever publishes Satriani's music would write a letter to Coldplay's publisher, alleging the infringement. Coldplay's publisher would then do a little research, which would include the hiring of a musicologist, who would give a detailed report about the alleged infringement. To my ears, this case is pretty simple. The two melodies are nearly identical.

However, to prove infringement, you need similarity + access. The Coldplay dudes probably claim that they've never listened to a Satriani record in their lives...and they probably wouldn't be lying. Satriani's publisher will argue how popular he is and note how many records he sold. They'll claim that just cause Chris Martin says he's never heard a Satriani record, doesn't mean he never heard a Satriani song in a record store or in an elevator, etc.

But still, a deal shoulda been struck between the publishers (usually, when you're as big as Coldplay, you don't even get to control this kind of stuff. You've signed your rights away to your publisher. Like when U2's publisher sued Negativeland against U2's wishes or when Fogerty's publisher sued Fogerty!).

Anyway...in my humble legal opinion, Coldplay sucks and I hope they get nailed with this one.

Satriani is pretty influencial to guitar rich bands...I dont think they can get away with saying they never heard any of his music. I think this type of stuff is silly, this person makes more money then you off a sound that sounds similiar to something you made and didn't sell well, so you get bitter.

    1. Joe Satriani is a hero to certain musicians. However, he is a punchline to a lot of younger rock bands who view him as a guy who is technically proficient, but just a guitar wanker. Not sure of Coldplay's opinion (before the suit!) of him, but he's far from a universally-loved figure a la Hendrix or Townsend.

    2. Its not about getting bitter. Its about theft. If I create a melody, and my song sells 1,000 copies, and you steal my melody, and sell one million copies, its still theft.

By guitar wanker he means someone who solos like a mother****er but can't play a groove to save his life. That's a non legal term from a guitar player mind you.

And  @ "musicologist". I'm not one of those but I can definitely tell you that coldplay ripped him off.

A guitar wanker is a guy who can play all kinds of licks, and play really fast, and knows all his scales, but its all for the sake of playing fast and tricky guitar lines and not much else. Its musical masturbation. Guys like Satriani, Vai, and even the Phish dude are excellent technicians, but their music leaves me cold.

I'll take a one-note solo from Neil Young over Joe Satriani any day of the week.

Funny, just the other day I was thinking how the piano intro to 'The Scientist' sounds an awfully lot like the piano intro to 'Getting In Tune' by The Who.

I have never been a Satriani fan personally, but that is blatant in my opinion. Its like listening to Led Zeppelin I and knowing that pretty much every song came from someone else. It puts a stain on their legacy and it should for Coldplay as well.

Led Zeppelin are the biggest charlatans in history!!!!

I love Led Zep, but they freaking STOLE almost all of their early songs!!! Surely you guys know about this.

Ever listen to the Small Faces? Whole Lotta Love rips off a Small Faces. Check it: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkQpZpFLpv4"]YouTube - Small Faces - You Need Loving[/ame] Of course, the Small Faces ripped off Willie Dixon.

You like that little ditty called, "Stairway to Heaven"?? Rip off!!

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czfI66yQUkk"]YouTube - Led Zeppelin Totally Sounds Like Spirit[/ame]

And then there is this exhaustive list of Led Zeppelin rip offs:

    http://therecord.blogs.com/blogovich/2007/09/led-zeppelin-as.html

    • ""Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."

    • "Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.

    • "Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson). Blogovich sez: This gets complicated in the “imposter” Sonny Boy part. There were indeed two of the dude, Rice Miller (the second Sonny Boy) and John Lee Williamson (Sonny Boy I) although Sonny Boy II wound up being, arguably, the more well-known, partly because he lasted longer — Sonny Boy I was murdered at age 34 during a robbery, but we don’t have time or space to get into all that; read a blues book if you’re interested. Bottom line: Zep ripped the song off.

    • "Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."

    • "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."

    • "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes). Blogovich sez: This is the one to which Jeff, who commented on the blog, refers.

    • "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."

    • "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."

    • "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).

    • "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70's and settled out of court.

    • "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.

    • "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.

    • "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.

    • "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit. Blogovich sez: Not “apparently”. This one is startling. Taurus, by Spirit (great band, pick up a compilation at least, highly recommended), is an instrumental of three minutes' duration; Zep copied the entire song and used it as the intro to Stairway. Give it a listen. But sit down first. Ridiculous.

    • "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."

    • " Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

    • Here’s one not from the site but from Blogovich: Give “Sail Away” by Deep Purple (1974 Burn album with David Coverdale on lead vocals) a listen and tell me Zep’s Trampled Underfoot from Physical Graffiti (1975) isn’t the same borrowed-from-Ritchie Blackmore riff, just speeded up. And Zep singer Robert Plant had the gall, at the height of the later Whitesnake’s admittedly Zep-derivative success, to call Coverdale “David Coverversion”? Amazing arrogance and the pot calling the kettle black crap. Further, Plant’s got the gall to write forwards to blues books and such, while his band so overtly ripped off those same artists. Amazing arrogance, Percy.

Zep defenders say old blues artists did the same thing with tunes, borrowing, adjusting, and so on. And that is in some measure arguably true. But nobody ever did it to Zep's extent. Not even close. Perhaps they could have given just a wee bit of credit where it was due?

That’s why, despite the hours of enjoyment (and maybe that’s enough for some people and that’s OK) Zep provided, they’ll always be a few cuts below the all-time greats in my estimation.

I love Led Zep, but Jimmy Page is a frickin thief!!!!!

I've been reading this crap for years now.

Amazing how if this was all so blatent, more lawsuits weren't issued...especially for "Stairway To Heaven".

Either it's not stolen, or the band Spirit are a bunch of asshats.

Bands have taken bits and pieces from other artists since the dawn of recorded music bro. That's not theft. If it was, the entire early hip-hop scene would have been in the crapper with all the sampling they did.

    Dazed And Confused = Theirs
    Communcation Breakdown = Theirs
Good Times, Bad Times = Theirs
Black Mountain Side = Theirs (although Al Stewart was very pissed off about this

3 songs on the album were covers "You Shook Me" and "I can't quit you baby" both by Willie Dixon and "Baby I'm Going To Leave You" by Anne Bredon.

    1969 vinyl edition
    Side one
    # Title Writer(s) Length
    1. "Good Times Bad Times" Bonham, Jones, Page 2:47
    2. "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" Page, Plant, Bredon 6:41
    3. "You Shook Me" Dixon, Lenoir 6:30
    4. "Dazed and Confused" Page 6:27
    Side two
    # Title Writer(s) Length
    1. "Your Time Is Gonna Come" Jones, Page 4:41
    2. "Black Mountain Side" Page 2:13
    3. "Communication Breakdown" Bonham, Jones, Page 2:30
    4. "I Can't Quit You Baby" Dixon 4:43
    5. "How Many More Times" Bonham, Jones, Page 8:28

thus, the most epic songs on that album were all theirs. The drumming footwork in Good Times Bad Times is superior because it is all done with a single bass drum pedal. Dazed and Confused turned into a 45 min. jam live and communication breakdown was INCREDIBLY heavy for the time...
