Adam_Schefter It's official: Bills have released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Schobel. Thoughts?
It is basically what do you want to pay for him, I think the Pats, and Texans would pay more for him.....
I assume he will want to go to an exclusive 4-3 team, and someone who is seen as a contender. We are neither.
How can you answer whether we or any other team should/would pick him up unless you know why the Bills cut him? I mean, its the Bills, if he's not good enough for the Bills, why would we want him?
Really? Care to discuss why you feel that way? I think we are in the hunt for the division, which in turn, makes us contenders.
That's not the reason the Bills released him. He's been threatening to retire all offseason, and hasn't shown for camp as far as I know; they probably wanted to get someone else in that roster spot. He's coming off a 10 sack season. The guy can still play. It's just a matter of whether or not he wants to, and for who. I don't want a 32 year old 4-3 DE mercenary, personally. Credit to the Bills for not letting this become a Favre situation.
And your avatar makes that comment even better. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. Price and motivation are the 2 things I think are the worries.
"Contender" was probably the wrong word to use. I meant a Super Bowl "favorite." Schobel has been contemplating retirement all offseason, he likely isn't going to anyone he does not believe has a solid shot at a Superbowl this year. We are contenders in the fact that we can (and I believe will win our division) but we are by no means favorites to be playing in Dallas in February.
Err I thought the main reason he was forcing the Bills hand is that at his age he wasn't looking to learn a 3-4 defense?
yeah I thought with Wake and Misi being the starters we dont really need him. Is he going to take a backup role? Do we bench Misi for a year or two? Do we bench Wake and keep him as a 3rd down rusher? I think from our end we go with what we have
My take is that Schobel would be a potential package guy for nickel downs. We don't know yet that Koa Misi is good enough a pass rusher to stick on the field in nickel downs. We know Wake is, but you should probably have two guys that can do the job. It doesn't hurt to have three.
Depends on what offers he's got on the table. He's been pretty one-dimensional with the Bills the last few years.
Based on his age, the fact that he doesn't really fill an immediate need or fit our system (as I understand it), I doubt we pursue him. The following also leads one to think that this FO would probably not be interested. Linkage: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp10/news/story?id=5436331
I want him to go to the Texans. I do think he's a good player and we could use him, but frankly I don't think we're the best fit for him. And it has nothing to do with being a contender since IMO we are. My read is that he wants to go back to Texas and be a starter. I think that for us he would be a rotation guy. Now, I expect that NE will also pursue him. I wouldn't mind putting a few bids in just to drive up the price.
He doesn't fill a need, imo, but we jumped all over Douglas and Grant when we lost Merling ? Why two guys to fill one spot ?? Perhaps the Troika feels differently about whether or not DE is a need spot. However, the conversations above are probably right. First, he has waffled back and forth as to whether to retire or not. Second, he hasn't shown up for any offseason work at all in Barfalo, so what kind of shape is he in and third, as you said, we have a pretty good mix of youngsters and vets along the DL as it is...I don't know that Schobel is much better than Douglas at this point. With Grant, Douglas, Odrick, Langford, Starks, Baker, Dotson, Ivey, Soliai, McDaniels, Montavious Stanley and Alama-Francis, it's a pretty packed house...Soliai and Ivey are pretty much strictly NTs, but Starks, McDaniels and Odrick are slated to be either/all three (NT, DT, DE) so that still leaves a lot of bodies to fight for spots...
I figured that's what you meant. I'd like to have him on the team. If he feels differently, **** 'em.
