Free agent CB Sean Smith is expected to seek $8-10 million annually on the open market.
Smith and his agent anticipate a deal somewhere between Brandon Carr (five years, $50 million) and Jason McCourty (five years, $43 million). Per the Miami Herald, the Dolphins don't believe Smith is worth that much and for good reason. Although very physically gifted and only 25, Smith struggles versus smaller, quicker receivers, and Pro Football Focus charted him with more combined first downs and touchdowns allowed than than any NFL cornerback in 2012.

No way, I pay that type of money for a above average CB. Bye bye Sean. Do not let the door hit you, on your way out of Miami. I hope Ireland does not over spend on average NFL talent, this is how you end up in Salary Cap hell. [ask the Jets]

They should of offered him a reasonable extension before it got to this point. I think he will get 8mil on the open market andwhile I agree about not overpaying.your talent, the reality becomes that its another need that now needs to be adressed this off season. I hope they have a plan

Yikes... he's nowhere near worth that, but he's probably going to get it from some desparate team. Theres quite a few teams that could use help at CB, and would gladly overpay for a big tall corner like Smith. I wish it didnt come to this, he shoulda been offered a deal long ago to avoid this. If he leaves, its another hole to fill... a huge hole really since we already have basically no depth at the position.

He can ask for 8-10 million but that doesn't mean he'll get it. Shoot high.GMJohnson likes this. -
Odrick is under contract for 2 more years, is cheaper. Younger and has shown some good ability. It really makes no sense. Don't get me wrong, I would love to resign Starks. Hell of a player. However, I'm not seeing it. And it's disappointing. Bpk was right, we should of traded him before the deadline. I think we're going to lose him and get nothing in return.
And really... Can you imagine trading another first round pick for peanuts? Cause that's what we'll get for Odrick. Maybe a 3rd at best.Bpk likes this. -

Very true. I had high hopes watching him in year 1. He got in position to make picks but had hands of stone. I was hopefull he would develop and fix that aspect of his play but it never happened. He is decent but not a game changer. In my mind he is a 4-6 mil corner. He may get 8 but he is not worth it. -
Maybe maybe not. I never thought we'd get a 2nd for VD. If they think Odrick is expendable and we got a 3rd or higher or something worthwhile I wouldn't mind it. We'd be ridiculously loaded for this draft. If not then we can just keep him, but I think Starks should and def could wind up staying.Clark Kent likes this. -

It also would not surprise me if Vontae has been telling Sean how nice it is to be out of Miami, and Sean wants to shop around to pick a landing spot of his own choice. -
1) Ireland sppent a 1st rounder on Odrick
2) Odrick has been played out of position, so NO ONE in this league is going to look at his production and think he's worth a 1st rounder.
3) So if Ireland trades him, we definitely 'lose value' compared to when we drafted him.
4) Trading BMarsh, Vontae and Odrick within 18 months and ALL of those having been "Buy High, Sell Low" propositions would not help perception of Ireland. I think he knows his job is at stake this year. If not, he truly *is* a moron. -
Guys. Jason Allen was a better CB.
Yah...I said it. Perspective. -
And I am totally with you on the trading a 1st round player for a lower pick... again. I don't think these things are feathers in a GM's cap so much as splinters in his balls. -
-
And the truth is, they could have used Starks when the Ravens' Rice and Pierce ran up 170 yards on them en route to a 24-9 playoff exit for the Colts. -
-
Odrick is insurance to Starks leaving. If Starks leaves Coyle will have no choice but to put him at DT. I'm not sure why Coyle is so hesitant to put him there. Odrick has put up his biggest plays from there.
