Here's a hilarous bit from Mike Tanier's (yes, I know everybody hates him) column. Personally, I'm still in Stage 1.
As a public service to Dolphins fans waiting for Mike Wallace like Linus waiting for The Great Pumpkin, here are the Seven Stages of Free Agent Receiver Buyer's Remorse:
Stage 1: Defensiveness. "It's still early in the season."
Stage 2: Rationalization. "He is forcing safeties to play deep, which is totally opening things up for Charles Clay. That's what you really want from your highly-paid deep-threat receiver, after all: opportunities for your tight end."
Stage 3: Deflection. "Ryan Tannehill's ball location on some of those dropped passes was not quite perfect. How can a $60-million receiver be expected to catch anything besides perfectly thrown passes?"
Stage 4: Globalization. "Bottom line, we are 3-2. That's what the Wallace signing, and all the other offseason moves, were really about: hovering just above .500 and finishing in second place."
Stage 5: Bye Week Hopefulness. "Wallace accepted the blame for his poor start. 'That's my fault,' Wallace told the Palm Beach Post. 'Everything. Whatever happens is my fault.' So all of the whispers about his unhappiness with his role and lack of chemistry with Tannehill are settled! It is time to turn the corner! And even if they don't quite connect this week: they are facing a quarterback named Thad Lewis, who has a foot injury."
Stage 6: Appeal to a Higher Power. "Jeff Ireland prepared for just this eventuality. He has a plan! How can you possibly suggest that Jeff Ireland does not have a plan?"
Stage 7: Acceptance. "Yup, we paid way too much for this guy, when we should have been solidifying the offensive line."
The Dolphins are obviously at Stage 5 right now. That puts them in better shape than the Bills, who are one awkward plant by Lewis from DEFCON Flynn.

A troupe at best.

Premature. I'm not thrilled, but it's only five games, he is the one most likely to run routes that require more time, our OL is a turd in a punchbowl.
-
Greg Jennings has only been marginally better at this point. The lesson learned here should be that you don't spend this much money on a free agent wide receiver. Especially a flawed one like Mike Wallace.

I think we overpaid for Wallace. I think we overpaid for most of the high profile FA. That's the reality of free agency. You're always going to pay market value, which is almost always "too much." That doesn't mean any were bad signings.
1). We have a strong cap. So it's not like we wasted minimal previous resources.
1b). Mike Wallace's contract is structured nicely. It's a 3 year deal.
2). Our cap is in strong position going forward.
3). We still currently have 20 million in cap, so Mike Wallace isn't too blame for the weak offensive line. That's on Ireland and Philbin. And in all fairness, I don't think giving Martin time to grow at LT was a mistake. And Clabo was terrific last year. No one saw his downfall coming. I do think RG is on them 100% though.
4). No one thought Wallace was going to turn into Megatron in Miami. While the 6 drops are frustrating, he's also played well. And could of been better if Tannehill leads him better on deep balls, for which he's been wide open for the vast majority.
5). I don't believe Wallace and the entire team will remain static through the next 11 games. It's a little early to be panicking.
I'm in all the stages it guess, lol.Califin, xphinfanx, Tone_E and 1 other person like this. -
I think it would be educational to look at Wallace's first games with Ben R.
-
Wallace has been a disappointment. No question about it. Luckily his presence does help the other pass catchers but at some point he needs to make more plays himself to be worth the money he got.
It is still early though. I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it quite yet. -
As would be shown by looking at Wallace's performance with BenR when it first began.
Of course that is more productive then merely doing the dolphins fan thing and whining.Rocky Raccoon likes this. -
Our o-line gets beat like eggs in pancake batter...Tanny does not like to throw the ball away
Send Tannehill in motion and have him throw a quick screen to himself. There! Fixed! You're welcomecdz12250 likes this. -
I like Wallace as a #2 option. We still don't have a first option receiver.
-
The OLine does not give anyone any chance to get the ball deep.
Wallace is not blameless, as he has had drops, but still, he'd have far better numbers on a team that protected its QB.

Whether it works or not, I'm a big believer in setting a tone
"..look at this mother ****er, he burned your CB and S, we can do this any play..deal with it.."
Philbin needs to sack up -
I'm more concerned with Philbin/Sherman showing me he has a set of cajones and realizing what he has to work with at this very moment.
Detachment is fine..to a point, he also has to realize he is leading a gaggle of high T men who want to do things, break stuff, and make it happen.
Sparano understood this, his problem was micro managing.
A fox met a cat in the woods, the cat toldthe fox:
"I have a simple escape plan, I run up a tree"
Fox replied:
"I have 100 ways of escaping"
A wolf jumps out of the bushes, the cat ran up a tree, the fox was too busy deciding which one of his 100 options he should use and the Wolf ate him. -

I really don't get all this grief that he is getting. How in the world can we as fans expect more out of him when the Oline is playing so poor our QB barley has time for the short game to develop, let alone the longer routes? And with that said how can we expect there to be a good game speed chemistry between them when they have had only had 5 games. Kinda hard to expect them to have that under the best of circumstances after 5 games. Sometimes you get lucky and magic happens and the QB/WR just click but I would expect it takes a while to happen.
Do I think we paid to much for him? yeah a little bit, but it is what it is, and we would have had to pay top dollar for any top FA. I don't know guys, maybe we need to temper our expectations with a little bit of reality and look at the whole picture of what is going on. I still believe when all is said and done this will be a win for our team. -
Generally speaking, I'm against big free agent signings. It's really hard to get value out of a player that a lot of teams are bidding on to try and improve their teams. As a result, the price is usually much higher than what they're worth.
Having said that, I understand why the Dolphins and Ireland needed him. Ticket sales and belief. They needed to show the fans they were willing to do whatever it takes to win.
While he certainly hasn't lived up the payday, his presence has been felt. He has made some big plays for us and he has tested secondaries downfield with his speed. Regardless of what many on here think, it does take time for a QB and WR to develop confidence and rhythm. It's not like Madden where you can just automatically plug someone in and they perform.
If by game 12 we're seeing the same thing, then I think it's valid to have some concern. It's still early in the season and I'm going to remain hopeful.
Then again, maybe I'm just in Stage 5... :-)Zeke0123 likes this. -

I still think if we can trick a team to send us a first round pick for the guy, you do it. If Percy is worth a first round pick, then I don't see why we can't get a first round pick for Mike, or at least a 2nd and a 3rd.
-
Every one of them was coming up going "You think he's gonna be worth it?"
My immediate response was "No, I think we overpaid", and I think because of supply and demand, we did.
There are some great things listed there that he does (defenses have to account, etc), but by and large I dislike putting chunks of money into one man, when a unit as a whole (whatever unit LB, TE, whatever) can be upgraded with that money.
It takes 22 on the field to win. -
Bad signing IMO

How about a double stage 7, we overpaid for the guy because it's the only way Ireland can attract a big-time free agent to play for Miami.

I dislike the overpaying Ellerbe and Wheeler signings more in terms of "when we should have been solidifying the oline"

I'm in no way a Wallace fan. I'm actually a pretty big critic.
However, obtaining Mike Wallace in no way hindered our ability to strengthen other areas of this team this past offseason. And it most likely won't hinder our ability to strengthen other areas of the team next offseason. After that we can cut him without getting drilled with a large cap hit.
So, in essence, I'd rather have Mike Wallace (pending he doesn't become a cancer to the offense and the QB) rather than not.
The alternative do not appear to be performing better, although we probably could've traded a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Hakeem Nicks and offered him an extension. But I'm not sure he would've been much cheaper and/or better than Wallace. So... -
You see, Mike Wallace might be playing awfully, but what he's doing is facilitating other guys. Through the magic of his speed, he's allowed Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, and Charles Clay all to out-produce him, be much more efficient, and produce more long receptions.
Mike Wallace is sacrificing himself for us. It's a beautiful, magical thing. Through #11 all things are redeemed, and all things are possible.gilv13 likes this. -
He wasn't my first choice, I didn't want to go over 8 mill a year, and I wanted Greg Jennings, once we signed him I wanted to wait to see him in our uniform to see if he could make up the difference, I do believe in what real speed in a real receiver can do overall for an offense, if I was the GM, I'm gonna be patient this year, probabaly pay him his large jump in salary next year, then evaluate the situation after next year, if in the 2nd year he can justify his salary going into the third year, ok, if in that 2nd year he doesn't justify the third year at his rate, I'm gonna approach him with a reduced salary alternative.
