I don;t even know if I'm serious about this.
Players get ruined by having their positions switched early and often in their NFL careers, so maybe it's best to leave Pat alone at QB for a couple years so he can develop.
Still, with us unsure of whether Ginn's stock will rebound or plummet further, AND with Offensive Co-ordinator Dan Henning saying no other receiver can get over top of the safeties....should we consider getting Pat White some practice reps at Wide Receiver?
If we start now, it's entirely possible that within four to six weeks Pat White could run several basic routes in certain situations. He is the only player outside of Ginn who has some real speed, and shiftiness.
If I am honest with myself, I guess I think it's too much to learn in too little time (Pat has zero experience running Pro routes, or catching the ball from a srong-armed QB like Henne). Still, if we are totally upsetting the apple cart in the search for receivers, it might make sense to start teaching Pat White how to be a WR.
He'd probably be ready to contribute around the time Thigpen had learned enough to be our back-up QB. Heck, White's not contributing enough on the field at present considering his second round draft status. Maybe we can get more out of him.
I am absolutely insane here?

I don't know, with the way he ran that option with Ronnie... I don't think he could make it, speed wise, as a wide receiver. I'd rather just keep him at quarterback and develop him into what we originally wanted to than change our plans... but that's just me.

anyone know what his 40 time was?
-
I don't know what his clock time is but i assure you he can run a 4.4
But no, he's fine where he is. If anything, we need to get him on the field more in the wildcat so we can put another weapon on the field for the defense to think about. This isn't the year where we're gonna show everything we have with White, but next year, i think teams are going to be incredibly frustrated by White.
having to gameplan all week long for our wildcat as it is must be annoying for opposing coaches. Imagine having to prepare for the wildcat, our basic offense with Henne, and then everything we can do with White on top of that.
Yes, we use a better wr corp. But with our style of play, it's not a necessity.Bpk likes this. -
My biggest problem with White is how he is used and the FO's persistence to use him as a "QB only"....
He didn't make a name for himself throwing passes.....he did it with his feet in the open field.
I want some value out of that pick. Try him as a return man, receiver, scat back whatever....but quit with this ridiculous notion that he's ever going to be an NFL QB.
He wasn't a highly rated QB in the draft.......he was a highly rated "play maker". So let's see it -

I understand the desire to see some production out of a second round pick, but if you viewed Pat as a developmental QB then you wouldn;t (and shouldn't) even expect him to be contributing this year.
I think it's only our dearth of production and unreliability from the wide receiver position that has us wanting to squeeze more juicee out of Pat White.
If Ginn had 680 yards and 4 TDs at this point I don;t hink we'd be this restless to get the ball into Pat's hands.
But Ginn doesn't.
And we *are* restless. SO maybe the coaching staff surreptitously finds a couple ways to get White the ball, not just via taking the snap, but on little screens to him from Ronnie out of the Wildcat etc.
I also wouldn't complain about a shotgun proset with Henne taking the snap and Ronnie and Pat White to either side of him.djphinfan likes this. -
It's like needing to know the dance steps so well that you don;t have to think about them, and you can just dance.
Pat needs to just play/run/throw... but his instincts are slowed by thinking about responsibilities and reads at this stage.djphinfan likes this. -
So does ANYONE think Pat White could play wide receiver?
Not scatback, not wildcat QB, but actually line up as a wide receiver.jetssuck likes this. -
Is Turner that bad? LOL
Pat White is definitely not a 4.4 speed guy. He is not very fast. I'd peg him at 4.6.
Edit-He ran a 4.55 at the Combine.Bpk likes this. -
Brian Hartline's official time was 4.58, for some perspective. Jeremy Maclin's official time was 4.48. Vontae Davis ran a 4.49 officially, and we all saw his speed on his touchdown saving tackle on the kickoff return last week. Pat White is fast. -

I'm going to assume we go QB in the 2nd round for the 4th straight year.Bpk likes this. -
Not really sure who posted it, but I think as fans we are in somewhat of a panic mode. Some of the issue is our belief that Ted Ginn would blossom this year into a solid WR. That has not yet happened. I would leave Pat White as a QB and continue to develop him there. I believe that he was brought in to be a play maker in the Wildcat and I would let him focus on that area. We all saw what happened when Jason Allen kept moving back and forth between positions, it was not very pretty. Lets hope some of our other young wide receivers begin to take up the slack and develop their talent.

He isn't a bigger threat running the football than Brown or Ricky. When its a passing play its really not the WC. The fact is defenses will play pass when White is in because he wont hurt you with his legs. -

I could see him playing a Jim Jenson type roll

Personally, I wouldn't worry about messing with his development, because I just don't think he'll ever make the transition to QB at the pro level anyway. Besides, I say Henne is our QB of the future. Frankly, I wasn't happy with the White pick on draft day, and even less so now. So, I say put him where you need help the most...PR/KR.
As far as WR goes...we gotta see what we have in Turner. Hopefully, we will all get a glimpse this Sunday.

on a serious note i wouldn't mind seeing pat in ricky's motion position or set up in the position we use our base qb in during the wildcat(penny at the top) and throwing a quick slant to him/him passing the ball. it still irk's me that we couldve used that second to draft a guy that would be seeing alot more of the field than one or two plays a game. i think the fo planned to use him more if they trade ronnie liike they've been trying but if they don't we used a 2 on a back-up wildcat qb/back-up base qb. -
we haven't seen seen pat white run in the open field. The problem with how we're currently using white is that every time hes one the field, its so obvious what we're gonna do with him.
We've let him throw one pass and thats it. Since then its been all hand offs and qb dives up the middle. We cant judge anything from that. -

I think we need to get some value out of White, but I don't know if he's WR material. Folks here are down on Ginn for drops, why should we expect a player who has zero experience at WR to have sure hands and be in the right spot for Henne? If we were going to try White somewhere other than QB, I would think returns would be the next likely spot.

The problem with Pat White, is that he WANTS to be a QB. In one of the pressers after the draft (god knows I'll never be able to find it now), he said that was one of the main reasons he was interested in Miami, was because of the fact that they wanted him to be a QB.
The only way I could see us making good use of him is if he becomes a Patrick Cobbs to some effect. He can play Receiver, he can play QB, and when he comes on the field you don't know which position he'll be playing. Those highly inaccurate balls though are really making it hard to make any sort of case for him being a passer, ever. I mean heck, Ronnie Brown is throwing better than him from what I've seenBpk likes this. -

We should teach him how to pitch the damn ball to Ronnie when he's running the option!

Well... all we agree on is
no one is happy with how Pat White is NOT being used.... whether not enough as a QB, too much as a QB, not as a returner, Wr or whatever.
No one agrees on what should be done with this second rounder.
Guess I'll just trust our staff on this one, but that means we need Hartline to emerge as a real passing game threat and Fasano to wake up out of his doldrums. -
and i dont expect to see anything from him at receiver. you never know. all the little things that receivers do wrong, a former QB might do correctly.
as far as a new receiver.... id rather see ginn tried at corner back and sean smith tried at receiver. we all know smith has great hands and ginna has bad hands. ginn can chase down almost anybody. if he could cover people HALF as well as sean smith, then it might be worthwhile to move them around. but i wouldn't go pushing for that kind of transition in the middle of the season. -
If things get hairy, I say maybe throw in some Pat White trickery, but we're going to need an ace in the hole going against the Pats, who are consistently getting better as the year goes on. -
