Sorry to keep going nostalgic here, but I want to try one more. If there's one single Dolphins play that stands out in your mind above any other, be it awesome or catastrophic, which one would it be. Some people will have the same, but since we're all different and come to the game from different angles and ages of life, there should be quite a few different takes out there. And when the rest of us read yours, we think, "Oh yeah! I remember that! That was cool/spectacular/horrible/etc." A few come to mind for me: -- Yepremian's ill-fated pass in Super Bowl VII -- Strock to Harris to Nathan hook-and-lateral against San Diego in '82 playoffs -- Nat Moore's helicopter against the Jets that made it to the Dire Straits video -- Marino injuring his Achilles (two from the New England game - first of the year - when Marino came back from injury) -- Marino's seven-yard scramble -- 4th-and-5 bomb to Irving Fryar to win the game 39-35. That was Marino-defined. -- Another 4th and long years later against Manning and the Colts, Marino throws up a prayer to Gadsden who comes down with it. We go on to score the winner -- Marino's fake spike play against the Jets But there's a TON of other great single plays. What's your favorite? I'll take the bomb to Fryar, although deep down, the hook-and-lateral, UGH! A win versus a loss. I'll take the win.
The game I always seem to remember the most was when they played Dallas in the snow, both teams completely out of their elements, and Larry Allen falling on the ball for a safety.
Yeah, that Dallas game had a couple, right? -- Keith Byars had a 77 yard run -- Leon Lett jumping and fumbling the blocked FG so Miami got another chance to win it
yeh thats the one I meant.....you must excuse me in my old age.....if Marty saw me say I was old he would hang me
Ooh, the Leon Lett play was a nightmare for me, I was living in Dallas and a Cowboys fan back then. Now that I came over to the Good Side of The force, it makes me laugh, but when it happened I was pounding the sofa. My favorite play is the comeback catch to Chris Chambers with time already run out in the 4th quarter comeback from 21 down against the Bills a couple years ago. I couldn't believe that play! Had me dancing on the sofa!
For some extremely odd reason, Dan Marino to Charles Jordan (the second hookup for a TD in that game) @ Oakland back in like 1997.
Strock to Duriel Harris to Tony Nathan hook and lateral....still gives me chills. I jumped out of my chair!
Marino to Gadsen.......left corner of the endzone to beat THEN rookie peyton manning.....that always sticks out in my mind cause dan the man drove us down in the 4th and showed the kid how its done!
And that's from the same game, I'm fairly sure, that Marino made that 4th down bomb to Gadsden (that I quoted in the original post) to keep that drive alive to finish it with the play you just posted. Awesome game and more awesome finish!
Another great thread bro Mine is from the mid 80's, night/late evening game, at the Orange Bowl vs. the Jets. It was a shootout, like most Marino/O'Brien games. I think the Fins were losing, but had the ball at the end of the game. My dad made us leave the stands and start to go down the circle ramp b/c the Jets fans started a fight right next to us. But, we could see the field through some spot on the way down. Our vision was limited... It looked like an extreme panoramic picture. We stopped just in time to see Marino launch it down field. The ball left our sight, but we could see Duper catch it down field for a TD as he beat his man deep. I was just a kid. I almost pee'd my pants I was so excited. The Orange Bowl was literally shaking. They sure don't build 'em like they used to
1 that sticks oout in my mind is the qb sneak that jay feidler had against the raiders to win the game in the regular season. for all of his physical limitations, he was a tough hombre.......
Love the way you tell your stories, finswin. I always end up flashing a huge grin at the end of them.
Louis Oliver's 102 yard interception TD return against the Bills in Buffalo in 1992. I went absolutely freakin nuts! One of my favorite plays but oh there are many!
That was a great game. I was in a sports bar with a lot of Dolphin and Raiders fans, and I'm sure you know, we all get along great. But when Fiedler went in with the time running out, the Dolphin fans were hoppin' and the Raider fans were exiting the building. That's always a great feeling (unless, of course, it's reversed).
I have that game on DVD and I watch it once in a while. We absolutely tore Buffalo up that day 37-10. What a great game! It was also Keith Jackson's first game with us.
Well, the fake spike has to be right up there, as does Lamar Smith's run for the TD in OT in the 2000 playoff game against the Colts, but for some reason the play that stands out in my mind is from the 98 playoff game against the Bills, when Trace Armstrong ran over Thurman Thomas en route to crushing Doug Flutie like Humpty Dumpty to end the game. It was freaking AWESOME, especially since the announcers were openly rooting for the Bills.
Derrius Thompson catches the pass from Feely....we beat the Pat's in Miami, with all the BS that year, that was a great moment.
Hook and lateral vs Chargers I know we lost the game, but for me, nothing comes close to the hook and lateral vs the Chargers in the 1981 playoffs. For those too young to remember, have a gander: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QFQLKdBKWnM
One play that sticks out in my mind (that hasn't already been mentioned) is Thomas' pick and TD return to seal the win against the Titans a couple years back. It was the flip at the end that got me- I remember thinking, "This is why I love the Dolphins- this is why I watch football." The sheer exuberance he displayed was priceless. Ah, ...good times.
That was the first monday night game of the season.....so amazing, i was so pumped i remember thinking "jesus he ALMOST didnt make it up and over.." almost landed on his neck hahaha
It was awesome. The Dolphins were dead that day when we started. Dead. Woodley was awful, we couldn't get anything going. My parents and brother left me alone watching the game because they were so disgusted. We were down 24-3 before you knew what hit us. Then, Shula inserted Don Strock, and it was game on. He drove us down for a TD to make it 24-10, and you had just this glint of hope. We got the ball back just before halftime, but not really enough time to do anything. And then out came the play, the hook-and-ladder, and the Orange Bowl went nuts. It looked like Tony Nathan was gonna get caught while he was holding up that ball, but he scampered in. I went jumping into the kitchen to my parents and brother who were eating some vienna sausages and lettuce or some gross stuff and mully-grubbing around, and I was shouting, "Come'ere! Come'ere! You've got to see this!!!" at the top of my lungs. They were like, "What?" And we all bounded into the bedroom where I was watching. The game went to halftime, but we didn't move after that. The ups and downs and highs and lows of that game were like nothing else I ever felt after that... maybe the '85 Iron Bowl when AU lost to Bama on Van Tiffin's kick, but other than that, nothing. But that play was awesome, and it was a huge part of why a lot of people, football fans, casual fans, etc., rate that game as the best NFL game ever played. The stakes were high. Offense was everywhere. I don't even know if the defenses showed up. But Fouts was great. Kellen Winslow had a game for the ages. And Don Strock looked like a HoFer that day. But that one play was the A-highlight for all of time. We shoulda won. Andra Franklin fumbled when we were icing the game. Von Schamman missed kicks and a routine one in OT. It was gut-wrenching. Yeah, it was something.
I think we have to remember the one play that helped us steer away from that 0-16 mark... I'm talkin' about Greg Camarillo!
You my friend hit it right on the head! One of the most overlooked plays in Dolphin history. If Andra Franklin does not fumble..we are in field goal range and the game is over. Thanks for making me sick all over again!
That is my most memorable play and my most memorable game. I remember being home alone as my folks went to grandmas. The emotions in that came were a rollercoaster. The Dolphins could do nothing right then on came Strock and they could do no wrong. The hook and ladder was beautiful. Great call great execution...when Nathan ran down the sideline I was standing and screaming. I remember bawling after the game and hating on Von Schamann for not getting his field goal up enough over Winslow and not really thinking about Andras fumble.I dont know why.....but oh such a wasted comeback. It is one of the all time great games in NFL history.
The fake spike play.. No doubt about it. I can still see A Glenn standing in the endzone like a deer in headlites. Marino1983
I really believe that team wouldve atleast made it to the AFC Championship game....they were that good, bad injuries, bad luck and bad coaching--the story of the 02 Miami Dolphins.
I havent heard u say that but I do agree, that team was as talented as any in the league that year, Ray Lucas truely makes me wanna puke, as does Culpepper's QB sneak and I could go on and on about the final game @N.E. It has been all down hill since.
Exactly right, I cant believe they didnt can Wanny within a half hour of that meltdown in NE..... Frusterating even thinking about it man...Im gonna goplay some Online Poker and cool off..
its gotta be the fake spike play... the snowy blocked kick/fumble recovery on thanksgiving in dallas, or greg camarillo's catch this year. i think those will stand out for quite some time in all our minds.
