From the various camp reports the following have seemed to flash some abilty DE Jared Odrick OLB Koa Misi OG John Jerry CB Nolan Carroll WR Taurus Johnson TE John Nalbone OLB Ike Francis Any other newcomers or people that failed to do anything year 1?
From what I've read Nolan Carrol and Ike Francis have been the two biggest surprises so far, with Chris McCoy coming to life today. That and Clemons being entrenched at FS...that really surprises me as I'd thought Tyrone Culver would have snaked the job by now. A lot now depends on how they play in the preseason games. With Sheets out, that leaves: RGM Nolan Carrol Tristan Davis T Johnson In the Returner mix, Tristan Davis is an interesting prospect, he set Auburn's all time return records and rarely played Rb, I've seen his 40 times and they can be wildly inconsistent, sometimes he is a mid 4.5 guy, others he is low 4.4 guy.
just to make clear flashing ability does not mean overthrowing wide receivers when there is no defense. now that we're all on the same page
I give him credit for absolutely sucking instead of doing something in camp and showing somemore "signs" thus continuing this foolish experiment any longer.... Pull the plug Spar......pull it!!!!
I never thought too much of Culver and I expect that Clemons will get the nod. I am surprised by Nolan Carroll shooting up like he has been. I NEVER saw that coming with this guy. He's getting an awful lot of press for a 5th round guy.
There are guys you hear about because people want to hear about, and then there are guys you hear about because they've actually done something. I took it that Jared Odrick is looking pretty good, that Nolan Carroll is genuinely surprising, and that's about it for the young guys. I think that Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall are showing off the goods right now, they ought to since they're $40 million men. You can't ignore when Sparano's asked what player has really popped out at him and he says he hates to single out a single player, but I'm going to single out a player...and says Dansby. People want to know about Koa Misi and so that's why you hear about him doing a "solid" job and whatnot. Reshad Jones made one big play but I've also heard about plays he's been victimized on. John Jerry's been starting the whole time but no word on how he's doing and the whole OL is such a sieve right now, it can't be all THAT good. I haven't heard anything that impresses me about Nalbone yet. He's a second year guy anyway. I haven't heard anything about Taurus Johnson yet. We kept hearing about Ike Francis but again, as I said the first day of this whole thing, I predicted that would be a 2 to 4 day story because of his size and athleticism, and the fact that he's being moved there...and I'd only be impressed if we're still hearing about him 7 to 9 days out. Well, we're now on Days 5 and 6 between yesterday and today. Anyone hear anything about him qualitatively, yesterday or today? Don't answer, I already know the answer. Just sayin. Anyway my newcomers are Nolan Carroll, Jared Odrick, Karlos Dansby and Brandon Marshall. I'm waiting to hear great things about Koa Misi and John Jerry but I just haven't heard anything that moves the needle for me. I'd love to, just haven't heard it yet. Haven't heard anything negative either, though.
What's really surprising about Carroll is he is really green at the position. He only played corner in his sophomore and junior years. He was hurt his senior year.
good points ck. taurus johnson wasnt even on my radar but i believe sparano mentioned him in a presser very recently. I think he's flashing a bit. Would love to find out if that's just one play or one day or whether he's doing it consistently. With Nalbone it seems like he's improved but all Ive read is one nice ctach and his physical assets clearly are outshining our other TEs. Dont know if that means he's playing better than them or just running windsprints better
Wake does not count I presume, but he was not a starter full time last year....? He sounds as though he is getting some praise from just about anyone that watches these practices.
Honestly, he's worse. Ginn, at least, had a productive season and showed flashes. I have seen nothing of White. The experiment is over. We have three quarterbacks better than him. Just let him go.
If the practices are only shoulder pads and not full hitting, that could be why. It is hard to maul someone when you are not allowed to maul them.
I wonder how Carroll would do at FS since he seems to have instincts for the ball and a receivers mindset.
