Bengal Cut After House Arrest

Maurice Purify, a wide receiver on the Bengals’ practice squad, will spend a week on house arrest after pleading no contest to violating probation in Nebraska, the Lincoln Journal Star is reporting.

Purify was sentenced to seven days in jail beginning on October 8, but his lawyer told the Journal Star that Purify has applied for house arrest and expects to be able to serve it in Ohio.

Parker & Two Others Out Versus Ravens

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced during his weekly press conference that running back Willie Parker will miss Monday night’s showdown with 2-0 Baltimore due to a sprained knee.

Parker suffered the injury during Sunday’s 15-6 loss to the Eagles. He continued to play.

Nose tackle Casey Hampton also will miss the game with a groin injury, along with defensive end Brett Keisel, who has a calf injury.

Bengals Sign Fletcher

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Cincinnati Bengals have signed veteran free-agent cornerback Jamar Fletcher to a pro-rated veteran minimum contract.

Fletcher was a first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2001 and has bounced around the league as a backup defensive back and special teams player, spending three years in Miami, two in San Diego, one in Detroit and one in Houston.

Troy Aikman Part Owner of Raiders?

Several readers have pointed out to us a fairly recent item in the East Bay Express, in which Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman is outed (not in that way . . . not that there’s anything wrong with it) as a part owner of the Oakland Raiders.

Here’s the money quote from the September 3 article: “Davis was apparently so hard up for cash ten months ago that he sold a 20 percent stake in the team to some silent partners, reportedly including former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, according to County Supervisor Scott Haggerty, who sits on the Coliseum Joint Powers Authority.”

Denver Cuts Safety ABudallah & Place Nalen on IR

The Broncos parted ways on Tuesday with safety Hamza Abdullah, according to Lindsay Jones of the Denver Post.

Abdullah started eight games in 2007 and was the starter entering camp. A groin injury derailed him, giving Marquand Manuel a chance to steal the starting job.

Vernon Fox was signed to take Abdullah’s spot on the roster.

Jones also reports that the Broncos placed center Tom Nalen on injured reserve. Nalen has been unable to practice of play this season due to knee pain.

Bears Cut Former Second Round Pick

The team announced on Tuesday that receiver Mark Bradley, a second-round pick in 2005, has been released.

Bradley was signed through 2009 at salaries of $520,000 this year and $570,000 next year.

I liked Abdullah last year, and he has to be better than Crocker. I'm pretty sure Abdullah is the reason Lynch was displaced.

I also believe that is the reason Lynch was released. Abdullah has been a disappointment for me. I liked him last year as well and thought he would be the starter. He couldn't beat out Marlon McCree for the Safety spot. Last year, he stepped in and while the Broncos defense wasn't good as a whole, I thought he made some nice plays. I figured he'd improve but so much for that.

Bring him in for a tryout, it won't hurt. Do we sign him? No. I don't know if he can contribute anymore than the current WR's on our roster. And I believe we still are first on the waiver wire but I may be wrong.

I thought the waiver wires changed during the course of the season to reflect the current W/L record. I could be wrong though :)

You may be right. I'm not completely sure to be honest. I always thought it was the team who had the worst record the previous season has the first dibs on the waiver wire for the next off-season and regular season.

I dunno if Bradley would be any improvement over our current set of WR's. Considering how starved the Bears are for WR's, maybe that's a red flag?

As for Fletcher, he can be a decent nickleback and STer. Too bad we used a 1st rounder on him.
