his type of speed is rare. i think players understand that a bit more than fans. getting rid of Ginn wasnt necessarily a bad move but not replacing his speed made no sense.

 

"Inside the Dolphins" translates to the hot dog vender and one of the field guys. Because "he ran out of bounds so fast, he never messed up the field."

 

That is what scares me about this coaching staff. They knew this, and as little technical knowledge of football as I have, and I knew it too. That is bad when a "regular joe" football fan knows something and the coaching staff does nothing to address it at all.

Now do some of you guys that think things are all rosy see why some of us are less than confident in this regime ? I loved that pic of the train wreck someone posted yesterday. It sums up exactly how I feel this coming season will end up.

 

Ginn was cheap enough to home onto, bad move.

 

I gave up on him as a wr, but thought he could be use at special teams,thing was he would not of taken less money .

 

Don't know for sure whether or not we are headed for a train wreck. I'm not good enough as a prognosticator for that, but I do agree that dumping Ginn, for what we dumped him for was a 'less than thought out' move. That is the one thing that I can fault this regime for is that they seem to miss in their planning to cover 'all' the bases... Moving Ginn might have been the best option and the 5th and Dobbins was fine for compensation, but they 'missed' on securing a returner when they let him go. They 'missed' two years ago on replacing the pass rush that JT accounted for when they dumped him. Again, I don't fault them for making the move, but for not counteracting that move to replace what you did lose....

I am in the minority that misses the things Ginn did bring to our team though....

 

I would not be surprised one bit to see him cut by the 49ers this spring (if we have football)

 

I was never on board with that trade even though Carroll turned out to be a pretty good pick. I felt that speed like that is unique and that even with his limitations he made the defense account for him. IMO he would have helped our offense that was so centered on short quick passes to Marshall and Bess, especially when Hartline went down. And I felt that his impact on STs was significant enough that it was worth keeping him despite the fan hate. I do understand that his salary was too high for a 4th WR/STs ace, but I also like when a guy can give you a couple of extra wins per season on STs alone.

 

I understood the cost-value argument, Ginn was making way too much money. But a 4th or 5th WR with significant KR value, young, and who has gone off for 200 yards a game? ... sounds like something you would always want on your team.

Meanwhile we are looking for a #2 WR, something we used to be cursed with, to stretch the field opposite Marshall while Bess runs the slot.

Ginn was too inconsistent IMO. He could break big returns, but he also made too many mistakes IMO.

He does look like a different runner on returns this year. He's not looking for the sidelines or dancing anymore. Also fair to assume that SF has better ST lol

I can't blame the FO for selling him low though. It certainly was no given that he would turn any more corners.

 

As I said before and after we cut him, he was worth keeping for the sole purpose for how he performed in games against the Jets. If a player only plays well enough to beat or help beat a division rival twice a season, you don't cut bait with him for a 5th round pick. This FO is one that would definitely cut off its nose to spite its face.

 

I would agree with you. IMO, Ted Ginn just plain and simple sucked as a football player. I agree that we need some speed on offense, but just speed alone won't get you anywhere, you need to have some talent too and this is what Ginn was lacking.

 

I sign Ginn back no questions asked. Vet minimum plus incentives for every yard past the LOS.

 

Easily the DUMBest move made by this staff. I'm still pissed over it. Anyone that kills the Jets should get a lifetime pass.

Having Ginns speed and being pretty much a washout at WR is a bummer. If he had an inch of talent at WR he would be dangerous.

 

Ginn wasn't making that much. Actually, he was a bargain.

 

His salary was jumping into the couple million + range for last season. That isn't a bargain for a 4th WR/KR.

 

He wasn't even ever the highest paid WR on the team....Cept for his rookie year. If we're doing value/production ratios, he returned
favorably to more than one WR on the roster. I was against trading him simply because of the hit speed took at WR.

This team lacks speed painfully.

 

I was against trading him too, but being the highest WR on the team isn't the standard for a guy who was likely going to be your 4th WR/KR. Most 4th WRs even the KR ones around the league are minimum salary guys. Paying upwards of 6 times that is a tough pill to swallow.

 

I'm with them. Why trade him? He wouldn't have been the focal point with Marshall here. I'd love to have had Marshall, Bess, Hartline and Ginn over any other combo on the team.

 

Ginn is really fast, but IMO that's about it. For all his speed, he's not an explosive player. He is the epitome of a long strider, and his short area quickness is average at best.

For all of that 'blazing speed' and playing with a pretty good group of WR's (plus Vernon Davis) in SF, he caught a whopping 12 passes, at 12.5 a pop, with a long of 37 yards.

There's a lot more to being successful at that position than just running fast in a straight line.

And lets not forget how unreliable his hands became after 1.5 seasons.

 

#4 Wr with rare return skills was worth keeping imo.

 

No one mentioned that we lacked speed on this team until this regime decided to get rid of Ginn for a song .

After that we had trouble stretching the field .Even as a decoy Ginn could have accomplished that .Defenses would have to respect the possibility that occasionally he did catch a long ball .Now even Ireland admits we lack speed.

This regime erroneously thought Hartline could replace that speed .

And of course Ginns kickoff returns were not adequately replaced .

Yet another flub in a growing list of flubs by this regime.

 

To be fair though, it did seem like they brought in a speed guy to replace some of Ginn's duties (KR/PR) in Kory Sheets.

Obviously, he landed on the IR before anything could materialize. We'll see what he can do this year.

 

These were probably those same players who gave him the nickname of "Downey" in the lockerroom. Ginn had to go, he's just not a football player.

 

So wait a minute, everyone was ready to run him out of town when he finally got moved, now we're upset because he's gone and we could have used his speed?

Well obviously, I mean... come on. This isn't some kind of revelation here. As much as the guy got bashed around here for ducking out of bounds, and dropping footballs that should have easily been caught, now we want to pout and whine because we got rid of him, which is what most people wanted? Wow, talk about bipolar :lol: I predict the same thing happening with Henne if we kick him to the curb too.

Speaking of Ginn though, I sure didnt miss his drops this year (although Marshall sure filled in nicely in that department), obviously we missed his speed though. Still dont see why we moved him for as little as we did, but whatever. It is what it is now.

 

I don't miss him.

 

I thought for sure after we traded Ginn for a 5th, Jacoby Ford was all but ours. But I guess a move like that just made too much sense.

 

Not everyone was on board with shipping Ginn. The guy had world class speed and we gave him away for a 5th round pick. He was absolutely misused on this team and it was frustrating to watch.

Ginn and Henne stand as two prime examples of trying to put a square peg in a round hole. When building a successful team you have two choices...

1. Get guys who fit your system

Or

2. Change your system to fit a player

This regime frustrates me in it's lack of adaptability with with it players. I like Sparano and have defended him a lot, but this is a major complaint of mine. Penny was PERFECT for our system, Henne is not. Either use the kids tools and put him in a position to succeed, or get someone else.

They didn't draft Ginn, but didn't use him full time on ST either. It seems like they said #1 WR or you're gone. Which is just silly. The guy can win you a game per year off of his explosiveness, and when used right I think he could help open up the offense. We dont ask Bess to be a #1 WR because hes a slow posession guy. We put him where he belongs and he's flourished. We just got pissed that Ginn wasn't something we wanted him to be.
