Spain's Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.

I am appalled... making fun of other nationalities is Americas job!

Seriously though it looks like the USA just added a few thousand more fans to their matchup with Spain.

What is the thinking behind this, why even pose like that? If it offends you or not, why take that pic?

Well interestingly enough, some of those (from the USA) who are offended are Chinese Americans......

The Chinese-American organization also issued a statement from deputy director George Wu, calling the photo "disturbing" and "divisive."

"It is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity," Wu said.

Attempts by ABC News to get a comment from Marca, the Madrid-based newspaper that published the ad, were unsuccessful. Madrid is one of the four finalist cities to host the 2016 games -- facing off against Chicago, Tokyo and Rio De Janiero.

As the controversial photo makes the rounds on the Internet, speculation has begun that the gesture many consider racially insensitive toward the Asian host country -- and anyone of Eastern Asian descent -- could jeopardize the Madrid 2016 bid.

I'm a Chinese American and I'm not that offended. Sure it's a bad taste but I make fun of the Spanish language anyways so there you go. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me to see the entire Spanish team arrested by Chinese police and summarily executed or sent to hard labor in the Gobi desert. If they were Chinese citizens, that'd be a guarantee, and if it were Americans doing it, we'd have calls for UN sanctions right about now....

And Pau Gasol's probably going to have some explaining to do with his new teammate this coming season...

Final MCAT attempt 5/28

I think they have net guns to catch them with, too.
I'm glad you've got thick enough skin that it doesn't bother you much. It's not the worst thing in the world to do. Nonetheless as was mentioned in the article it's a poor way to represent your country. And when Americans have done similarly insensitive things it's pretty embarrassing.

Uhm, Spain is a very good team. Probably up there or if not better than Argentina. Another good one is Greece.

Little known fact I guess. You usually don't see Asians interested in football (the American kind) much less have played football. But I guess being born and raised here, I'm not really into some of the newer pop culture mainlanders are interested in (long dyed hair and high-pitched Asian pop music? No, thank you) and I consider myself more American than Chinese. Heck, I've got relatives over from China and while they root for China, I root adamantly for the US (though they too weren't too bothered by the picture). But I still consider myself Chinese mainly because of genetic and historical aspects that I can't control and I still follow a good amount of traditions. So I still cringed a bit at that picture but I'm not going to go all out and protest (now if they said a particular derogatory word analogous to the n-word for African Americans, then I'd be completely offended). Besides, Spain got deservedly booed and it's likely they'll be booed from now on (good for Team USA too).

It's easy to be offended at first glance, I'll admit that but it's not enough to really trouble me. What the team did was a very poor thing to do and reflects extremely poor judgment. The fact that the Spanish team was slow to apologize and the Spanish press even dismissing I think made it worse. I mean even though I let it slide, I still recognize that it is offensive even though the Spanish press doesn't think so. That's possibly something to be angry about.

Really??

The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spaniards though, booing vigorously during the game.

There is an asian comedian that does a very funny piece about this.. he says that sometimes he'll get; "hey you !" and he will look over and some guy is pulling at the corners of his eyes, making them slanted. The comedian then puts his fingers along his temples and says "oh yea!" and pushes his fingers towards his nose.. giving him "round eyes" I almost fell outa my chair laughing..
