I am appalled... making fun of other nationalities is Americas job!
Seriously though it looks like the USA just added a few thousand more fans to their matchup with Spain.
usa is probably the only country offended by this(ive seen asians say they aren't offended)....the pc-police are out in full force
That makes it ok then.
What is the thinking behind this, why even pose like that? If it offends you or not, why take that pic?
i didn't say that, i said nobody is really offended but americans who always have to be politically correct
Well interestingly enough, some of those (from the USA) who are offended are Chinese Americans......
The Chinese-American organization also issued a statement from deputy director George Wu, calling the photo "disturbing" and "divisive."
"It is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity," Wu said.
Attempts by ABC News to get a comment from Marca, the Madrid-based newspaper that published the ad, were unsuccessful. Madrid is one of the four finalist cities to host the 2016 games -- facing off against Chicago, Tokyo and Rio De Janiero.
As the controversial photo makes the rounds on the Internet, speculation has begun that the gesture many consider racially insensitive toward the Asian host country -- and anyone of Eastern Asian descent -- could jeopardize the Madrid 2016 bid.
I'm a Chinese American and I'm not that offended. Sure it's a bad taste but I make fun of the Spanish language anyways so there you go. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me to see the entire Spanish team arrested by Chinese police and summarily executed or sent to hard labor in the Gobi desert. If they were Chinese citizens, that'd be a guarantee, and if it were Americans doing it, we'd have calls for UN sanctions right about now....
And Pau Gasol's probably going to have some explaining to do with his new teammate this coming season...
Them's fightin' words!
Seriously? I didnt realize you were Asian...not that it makes any difference, but it DOES put a good light on how this might affend somebody...and in your case it doesnt.
BTW: I am Mostly Irish (Black or Scott Irish) and I make fun of myself getting drunk and picking fights ALL the time.
I think they have net guns to catch them with, too.
I'm glad you've got thick enough skin that it doesn't bother you much. It's not the worst thing in the world to do. Nonetheless as was mentioned in the article it's a poor way to represent your country. And when Americans have done similarly insensitive things it's pretty embarrassing.
USA Basketball is the best. Spain's Basketball team could be the worst in the world. How do you like that for offensive. Well I guess the truth hurts does'nt it spain.
spains team is really good bro, they could beat USA and it wouldn't even be a shocker
Uhm, Spain is a very good team. Probably up there or if not better than Argentina. Another good one is Greece.
Little known fact I guess. You usually don't see Asians interested in football (the American kind) much less have played football. But I guess being born and raised here, I'm not really into some of the newer pop culture mainlanders are interested in (long dyed hair and high-pitched Asian pop music? No, thank you) and I consider myself more American than Chinese. Heck, I've got relatives over from China and while they root for China, I root adamantly for the US (though they too weren't too bothered by the picture). But I still consider myself Chinese mainly because of genetic and historical aspects that I can't control and I still follow a good amount of traditions. So I still cringed a bit at that picture but I'm not going to go all out and protest (now if they said a particular derogatory word analogous to the n-word for African Americans, then I'd be completely offended). Besides, Spain got deservedly booed and it's likely they'll be booed from now on (good for Team USA too).
It's easy to be offended at first glance, I'll admit that but it's not enough to really trouble me. What the team did was a very poor thing to do and reflects extremely poor judgment. The fact that the Spanish team was slow to apologize and the Spanish press even dismissing I think made it worse. I mean even though I let it slide, I still recognize that it is offensive even though the Spanish press doesn't think so. That's possibly something to be angry about.
i dont remember who it is but there team sponser is chinese and did aprove the ad
The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spaniards though, booing vigorously during the game.
And the fact they had to go to OVERTIME against the Chinese? It obviously affected Spain's play. We will crush them!!!!!!
There is an asian comedian that does a very funny piece about this.. he says that sometimes he'll get; "hey you !" and he will look over and some guy is pulling at the corners of his eyes, making them slanted. The comedian then puts his fingers along his temples and says "oh yea!" and pushes his fingers towards his nose.. giving him "round eyes" I almost fell outa my chair laughing..
that was good
I know I was kidding o my gfosh take a joke and King Fdlix no can be beat America. Be patriotic.
a few thousands? more like millions
You think that many people can fit inside that little arena? Not all Chinese are as small as their Women's Gymnastics team bro...
A few good articles:
I guess Spain has a history of using racial slurs. In a sense, I do believe it was slightly overblown. It was in bad taste but it didn't really reach the level of n-word to me.
I agree with J. Kidd. It is a double standard. I doubt they would've been thrown out as he suggests, but it would me a much bigger story and stain on the league and our country.
Good articuls bro. Thanks. Do you know if Pau Gosal was in the picture?
Yea I agree with Jason Kidd to.
Ya see this is what gets me......
You've got a situation here where a group has made fun of another ethnic group and many brush it off as not a big deal.
Which is fine. I mean I don't agree with a military state of PC either and people should be able to poke fun. It may be in bad taste but it shouldn't be an earth shattering deal.
However, when discussing racial stuff, the conversation always ends up coming back to racism against African Americans and how all other racial situations pale in comparison to the ones against that one group.
It's gotta be one way or the other for ALL groups.
Indeed. As big as it's getting for Spain, it could be much worse if it were Team USA.
Thanks. Yes, and his brother too. Not a proud moment for Laker fans, and there are a lot of Asian Laker fans.
I agree. And my cousin (who is half African American and Asian American) touched on this when we were discussing it over the phone. It comes back to racism against African Americans because essentially, to the American public's eye, they were the first to cry out against racism in such a large manner and essentially become the benchmark. Honestly it should be the same for all groups as you said. Essentially, it's just the same as someone white putting on black-face. Some still consider it offensive, some don't (like the upcoming Robert Downey Jr. role). Frankly if they started saying the c-word, then I could be more than supportive of a major uproar. But judging by the context, I didn't think much of it. It's the responses and ignorance made by the Spanish press and players that I think are the focus of my complaints.
How many people who live in China do you know? Honestly I'm interested.
I thought it was funny...but...I'm not asian...so..
I think there are a lot of Asian Laker fans because the just signed a point gaurd from there team.
I did not think it was funny but I did not really think it was that ofensive but I am no asian so I dont know. I pretty sure they were offended
mannnnn this is not a big deal imo.....
people make fun of people who are different......every human being does it, its human nature....im sure the chinese people offended have made fun of some other ethnicity one way or another....it happens, it didnt kill anyone.....god people are so sensitive!
Yep in both LA and China. There were rumors that Lakers were considering trading for Yi Jianlian because of the added revenue (just ask Houston). But I like Sun Yue, certainly has game but could use a little improvement. Sort of a Sasha-project in my mind.
...so you're next on the execution list.
Ah boo friken hoo...put ur finger under your nose to make dirty sanchez mustache when you go to a hispanic country and I will laugh at your comedic attempt.
[holding finger under nose]
I dirty sanchez in your general direction Dave, take THAT !
