Sparano was 100% correct to call for the QB change mid-season when he pulled Henne in favor of Pennington. I know there was a lot of debate around this, but who could have imagined that Henne was this bad when the team needed him most?
I guess the best part of the Pennington injury is that we clearly know that Henne is not the long term answer at QB now.. But imagine, just image where we could potentially be if Pennington held up.
Those late INT's against the Browns and Lions probably don't happen, and going in to week 17 we probably either secured a wild card spot or are playing for one...
I truly think that we have to take this in to account when we judge Sparano and our desire to see him get fired. Sparano saw the writing on the wall with Henne, and made a bold move to save the SEASON, not his job when he inserted Pennington.
Sparano has finally caved in to the pressure and opened things up for Henne, and the results have been catastrophic. No 2 minute offense, and a true lack of leadership from Henne when we need him most.. The guy has a fear of victory and no killer instinct. As soon as the game gets tight he tightens up and starts making ridiculously stupid throws and reads.
Parcells was on to something. Sparano was on to something and made the tough decision he had to make to save this season..Pennington could not hold up was quickly injured - So the question remains, should Sparano get whacked even though he tried everything possible to save this season and knew beforehand what is unfolding before our very eyes? That Henne is 2nd rate QB that will lose you more games with stupid throws than will win you with good ones?

The truth of the matter was that Sparano was looking for leadership and a QB that plays smart, error free football. Two traits that Henne has regressed, almost to John Beck-ian levels. -
i think the coaching staff has done all it could with what it was given. still coaches careers live and die on the shoulders of their QBs. Fair or not. The decision to bypass Matt Ryan for Jake Long is starting to look like a complete failure. I have been patient with Henne and who knows maybe he gets his head out of his *** next year but he's starting to remind me of AJ Feeley. I never feel comfortable when he goes back to pass. I always feel will he throw an interception or wont he? Forget the picks, the guy's situational awareness and pocket presence is horrendous. If he gets a pass rush he immediately drops his eyes and starts to lurch around trying to find an extra yard or two. He never keeps his eyes down the field when he's moving. He has no sense when to play conservatively and when to get aggressive. He almost inexplicably does the opposite of what the game situation requires. Its not all his fault but three years into his career he's still playing like a rookie. Will the light ever turn on for him?

These are skills you either have or don't have. Henne has not shown me that he can be an elite, let along a good QB. No confidence, no sense of urgency, none of the passion you need to succeed and will victory...
Case on point, the last play of the game after his 3 yard out pass to Ronnie.. When the ref was holding on to the ball, where was Henne? Was he screaming like a maniac, waving his hands to get the ball and get off the snap? How did Henne react when the clock hit zero?? Did he jump in the air and start cursing? Did we see rage in his eyes? Nope, he put his head down and walked away.. Can you imagine how Dan Marino would have reacted under those circumstances?pumpdogs, adamprez2003 and NyPhinfan like this. -
There is a continued lack of situational awareness with henne that is just mind numbing after awhile. -

That play call was horrible.
Look, Henne has had his problems, but I swear its Henning that does not know the situation half the time, some of the play calls are mind-boggling, like the 2nd and ten wildcat against the Bills late in the game, pure stupidity.
I have always been a Sparano backer, but I'm now off the bandwagon, its time for him and Henning to go.DolfanJake likes this. -
Either Sparano or Ireland has to take the axe for Henne's play. Bottom line in any business is coming out ahead. In the NFL winning at home games is imperative, not only for your post-season chances, but also for the most important things, $$$ for the owner. He doesn't own the team to be charitible. This owner we have, may actually have overpaid for this franchise, so he is trying to recoup his investment. Home losses equates to less season & game tickets sold, which in turn leads to less concession sales. Ross will have to evaluate if changing the whole regime will help bring the fans back. Don't discount all of this as a factor when Ross has to make this very tough decision over the next couple of weeks.
If he screws this up, he may become so jaded that he sells the team, and then you never know what happens. There is supposedly a new stadium & facilities being built in Los Angeles, the stadium we have needs hundreds of millions of new investment $$$ to get it up to the level of the new stadiums, etc.
If you think thats out pf the realm of possibility, just ask the Cleveland Browns fans about it. -

The real facts are, this offense played pretty good yesterday. The defense gave up a few too many plays. And turnovers killed us. The pick-6 wasn't Henne's fault. The WR fell down. Why do our players always look as if they are about to fall? Or they always slip around? The 1st INT may have been his fault, but looked to me like the rookie TE Shuler stopped his route and Henne led him. Or, Henne could have just led him too far. Either way, it was a pass that was a mere inches off target.
Also, it's not like Henne has 48 games under his belt when you write "3 years". He has 26 starts. Yes, he needs to improve a lot on a few things, but it's still only 26 starts. I think the entire coaching staff, sans Henning, needs to be allowed to have one more year. I think Henne needs one more year in order to find out just what he is. One more off season to get in synch with his receivers. One more off season to work on his faults.
This off season, find a new OC, either bring in a guy like Kolb to compete with Henne or move up in the draft and try to get someone else to compete with Henne. Draft a speedy RB/WR and get some depth on the O-Line.
I think if the Dolphins can get those things accomplished this offseason we will be a legit playoff team next season.
Then again.... :( -
Or if Sparano didn't blow it by wasting a timeout on a useless challenge, or if Henne didn't blow a timeout late in the 4th, we wouldn't have this issue.
Then again we may have driven down to the 10 with under 10 seconds and no timeouts and called an inside handoff to Polite to catch them off guard :DDolfanJake likes this. -

I am 50/50 on Sparano. I am 100% on retaining Mike Nolan, regardless.
But, Sparano has to let go of Henning and the entire offensive staff. Further he has to be willing to bring in a quality offensive coach who can run a good passing attack.
I like some of the moves that Sparano has made and wholeheartedly agree that he was right to switch QBs. I also like Sparano in other ways - he seems to be a quality coach and his players like him.
However, I do think he fails at game management quite often. He puts far too much stock into FG's (when he should be dissatisfied; this is not the 1960's NFL); his clock management is lacking also. Further, his constant musical chairs with the OL has been disastrous, imo. He has also not done a very good job scouting for O-linemen, given that he is an OL coach. This has been one of the core values / staples of the Parcells system (a big, physical OL) that has simply and completely eluded Ireland and Sparano. Finally, the problem I see with keeping Sparano is that the offense needs serious rebuilding, imo, including several positions. But, Sparano, if he stays, has no more than one year to turn things around. That means, he will look to stop gaps and quick fixes which are less likely to succeed long term. So, he becomes a guy who MUST win next year or else. That scenario, without a firm base of talent (say like the Lions on offense), is tough to figure out how things will work.
I would not want to get rid of Ireland and completely scrap the Parcells change and system that has gone one. I am willing to give another year to this group though I'm basically 50/50 on Sparano with a slight lean against. Leaning for him only if the changes to the offensive system take place.NJFINSFAN1 likes this. -

We will have to agree to disagree, to me it was a horrible call from the start.
This staff coaches not to lose, they don't coach to win
