I think this is a debate that needs to happen. Which would help this team in the RB department more? Which one is worth the the higher draft? ...and remember we run the wildcat...:shifty:

The one that can play OLB and get to the QB.
Oh wait, neither can do that.
Neither
If I had to pick one Spiller hands down.
But we need a pass rush firstSceeto, Xeticus, DeDolfan and 1 other person like this. -
I'd say Spiller helps the RB department more. No question in my mind. But, I think it tilts more to McCluster relative to the team department since we'd have to spend the #12 to get Spiller whereas we can get McCluster later. I don't know too much about McCluster though to really comment any further.

I wouldn't complain if we drafted Spiller at #12. Dude's an amazing talent.

The only way I see us drafting Spiller is if someone bites on the 1st round tender for Ronnie Brown. That would assume they're likely a higher pick in the draft and don't think they can get spiller. We then use our #12 for SPiller (assuming he's still there), and our later 1st round for a position of need.
But again, I doubt someone is going to bite on Ronnie, and that's about the only way I see it going down. -
Niether. We're all set at RB. We need other things first. That simple.
-
Neither. People are looking too hard for the next Darren Sproles or MJD, but what they're likely to get in that search is a not-half-as-successful Reggie Bush.
-
Actually I take back my previous statement. They might go Spiller IF all of the top talent for positions of need are taken.
Basically meaning that the first 11 teams load up on FS, OLB, NT, and WR. I could see us doing that if we think that anyone else we take at that point is going to be a reach.
Again not something I see happening, but you never know, drafts are crazy. I wouldn't be upset with Spiller, so long as we don't go for him and forsake one of the positions we're running light at. At RB we have Ronnie, Ricky, Cobbs, and to a lesser degree Hilliard. -
I wouldn't say Hilliard was lesser to Cobbs at this point. Not many running backs can gain 18 yards on a draw plays with a pure power run. Cobbs is coming off a knee injury and unless the FO likes Cobbs so much that they're prepared to commit roster shenanigans, I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut.
-
If it was the ONLY choice I had it wouldn't be McCluster.

Running is the least of our concerns

I think we will have a 90% "D" draft as it should be, but for arguments sake would you draft Spiller or McCluster?
Lets look at it this way:
Williams is old and retiring
Ronnie is getting beaten to death and is pushing his recovery luck
Hillard is improving but cannot yet carry the full load yet
Cobbs is a great 3rd down back
So who will be in the backfield next year? If you had to choose would you take Spiller or McCluster to carry the load??????? -
Spiller is way better than McCluster also. -
Spiller because he's not only an explosive RB, he's also a legitamite threat on KR/PR which Ginn and Bess are not. I also wouldn't be suprised to see us take a 2nd for Ronnie if it was counteroffered on Draft day, if Spiller is, available at #12.
-
I can see Spiller at #12, Ricky and Ronnie could both be gone after this season. How come no one is really talking about Golden Tate at #12??

:sidelol: at McCluster.
I have a vision for Dexter McCluster's NFL career, and it's a scene from one of my favorite movies: The Hunger.
It's that scene when David Bowie's body has all but given out, and Catherine Deneuve is carrying his limp, frail and broken body up to a waiting coffin, for him to pass all eternity in his waif-like state.
I picture EMTs carrying McCluster's tiny little broken body away like that after his first NFL hit.Skeet84 likes this. -
I really don't see them taking a runningback in the early rounds, we have too many needs that are more pressing than runningback. WR , OLB, NT and FS are immediate concerns that have not been addressed. TE is not an urgent need but will have to be addressed at some point.
I don't think that they believe anyone will give up a first for Ronnie Brown. But if some team bites then that creates a need, but provides a 1st round draft choice that they can address the runningback position with and still have all of the original draft picks for the other needs.jetssuck likes this. -
This is assuming that we get rid of Ronnie Brown and so far I haven't heard of any teams that are interested in him. You are also saying that one of these guys will be able to run the Wildcat. It takes a special type pf running back to run the wildcat. How do you know either of these can run the wildcat?

But I don't see this team taking RBs in the top 2 rounds; nor would I like to see it, given that the Wildcat is a part-time formation and after wasting the pick on Pat White last draft, we could ill-afford more reaches just to run that set.54Fins likes this. -

And on how I think that watching Spiller take the sweep handoff from Blount might just be the most exciting thing we'd ever see in our years of watching football.
:wink2: -
I would choose spiller over mccluster but I think rb is a need we can fill next year.

The either/or question would be closer to a fair comparison if you'd said Spiller or Jahvid Best. Then it still comes down to when you want to pull the trigger. Spiller is 1st round lock unless he robs a bank before the draft. Best is likely a 2nd rounder who we could get at 43. McCluster is no better than a 3rd/4th type to me. Also, many teams will consider McCluster more of a WR rather than a RB.
-
Here's a funny thought. With this draft being so deep in defensive talent and a great number of teams lining up to draft them, the RB position could be partially ignored.
If we played the contrarian point of view we could get a top notch RB at a lower round due to the huge defensive focus where in other years they could have been a first rounder.
Ireland is famous for playing head games with the media and other outlets, I just wonder if he isn't going to surprise everyone and instead of drafting the WR at number 12 like everyone thinks, he plays a head fake.cobrajet likes this. -
People do funny things in the draft and there is no way of knowing which way the nickel will fall when flipped. I think our #12 pick will be an NT. These folks are hard to find as it is and we are lucky that they are available.

If they draft McCluster it won't be as a RB, it will be as a WR. His run after the catch ability is immense! They will also use him as a returner with success. Spiller is a better RB without question but is not multi-use like McCluster.

Miami is going NT, SOLB, FS, and WR with their draft picks. The 6th round and beyond will be BPAs at any position. If anyone of those players fall that far then, yes. But not happening otherwise. -
If I had to take one of them it would be Spiller, because McCluster is going to get folded in half the 1st time he takes a real hit. If we pick up McCluster after drafting that lightweight Pat White last year I am going to come completely unglued. :pity::tantrum:
We don't need to address RB this year with anything but a late round pick and only then if there is someone they percieve as too great a value to pass on. -

Spiller, but ONLY if someone takes Ronnie and gives us another 1st round pick we can use on defense.
