Sports Buzz • Dolphins tried to trade for Mankins•Marino supports Henne
45 replies
This weekends version touches on several Dolphin topics.
To begin with Marino thinks Chad Henne has too much ability to give up on.
Saturday that even though it’s understandable the Dolphins will explore other quarterback options, Chad Henne has too much ability to give up on. “The kid’s worked hard, he’s had to deal with a lot, and he’s going to grow from that,’’ Marino said before his Walk About Autism on Saturday. “He has the potential to be a starter and win in this league, and he showed that already. So why not? Why can’t he be really good? The most important thing is Chad doesn’t give up on Chad.”
There is also some skepticism about the new coaching hires
• Some of the Dolphins’ coaching hires have drawn skepticism around the league, especially the shifting of Karl Dorrell from receivers coach to quarterbacks coach, a position he has never held (though he has been a college head coach and offensive coordinator).
Former Alabama coach Mike Shula, who did good work developing David Garrard in Jacksonville and was the Dolphins quarterbacks coach the last time Miami won a playoff game (2000), would have listened to the Dolphins, but they never called him. He left Jacksonville and joined Carolina as quarterbacks coach this month because he’s close with new Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. The Dolphins privately said Brian Daboll was their top choice (over Chudzinski and others) for offensive coordinator, so it will be interesting to see how the Chudzinski/Shula pairing fares compared with Miami’s choice of Daboll/Dorell.
There is more about the possible signings of Logan Mankins and Brad Smith .
The Dolphins, who tried to acquire Patriots Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins before the trade deadline and likely will have interest in him this offseason in free agency, can be encouraged by this: Mankins told The Boston Herald on Friday that he doesn’t expect to be back with New England. “I don’t see them trying to keep me,’’ he said, adding he would be unhappy if the Patriots put the franchise tag on him. Miami could hurt two division rivals by pursuing Mankins and Jets receiver Brad Smith, who averaged 7.1 yards per rush when he lined up at quarterback and was second in the league in kickoff return average (28.6).

Tuff to argue with "Dan The Man" about a QB. I did not know that Brad Smith was a FA. I think he would be a good fit in adding a real threat on kicks, and would add some teeth to the wild cat.
Dan has a twitter account now http://twitter.com/DanMarino
Wouldn't mind either signing at the right price.
I wouldn't mind Smith lining up in a traditional QB type role with the run option but I'm kind of tired of the wildcat to be honest. It's not because I don't like the concept of an unbalanced line or anything it's just that teams have figured it out. Even if he were to pull QB duties from it and a WC play was called it would have to be effective. Essentially last season and maybe even the season before a bit it was just a loss of down.

Uh oh, Dan. You just signed up for HenneHomer.com, too.... where you can join the rest of us strokers. Massive amount of sarcasm. :glare:

Logan, I'd like you to meet your new partner.......... say hi to Mr. Stonewall Long.

Thanks CT. Is that the first time Marino had a comment on Henne? Guess it kinda kills the Henne debate for now.
I haven't had much time to visit the Heat forum but, things will ease up in the next week.

If we get him the left side of the line is definitely set.

Mankins isn't going to be a guy you sign "at the right price". He's a guy the could command about 10 million per. And if the Dolphins interest in trading for him this past season was legit, then I suspect they know that and may be willing to go there if he hits free agency.
not sure about henne. mankins tho would be huge for any team. if the dolphins get him they could have the best o line in the nfl

While I happen to agree with Marino in this instance, I don't agree that he knows much about evaluating QBs. Marino is the classic example of a guy who went on his own instinct and ability, but can't teach it to others or even see it in others. If you ever listen to Marino talk about QBs, it generally all comes down to, can the guy throw or not. I think that's one of the reasons you never see Marino break down plays.

So Marino reinforces the same things I've been saying all along
“He has the potential to be a starter and win in this league, and he showed that already."
“The kid’s worked hard, he’s had to deal with a lot, and he’s going to grow from that,’’
Henning and Lee were on a path of destruction with our young QB. He has been through a lot indeed.
I would love for the impatient whiny Henne haters to dispute that.

I don't recall Dan being highly critical of a young dolphins player in a negative way. That's not his nature. So i wouldn't look too much into it.
What did you expect him to say ? Dan will not create such drama by being critical at this time. He's not dumb and knows the last thing this organization needs, with all the embarrassment of the coaching searches this offseason, is to create drama with headlines that the greatest Dolphin QB of all time doesn't think Henne is the answer.
He's not going to create yet another black eye to this organization after yet another a dismal season, 1-7 at home , with a possibility of low attendance in the stands next year as people are already up in arms why sparano was retained and with all the inexperienced position coaches.
If we added Mankins, Smith, and a Safety? Draft an RB and lets rock and roll.
fooball.
futbol.
hockey.
Mankins next to Long would seriously be an awesome pairing. Talk about shifting the majority of your running game behind those 2.

You are projecting Marino's strength to whether he mentally knows what makes a good QB.
These are 2 different issues.
He played in the league and mastered the position.
I think he's got a good feel of what to look for in a QB.
Not saying he could or could be a scout or anything but to assume he can't watch another QB and look at crucial aspects of his game to project whether they have certain skills or not that show promise is just unfounded completely.
Secondly, as much as Marino went "on instincts" he also had full ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage to whatever he wanted.
You think a QB gets that ability if he can't read defenses or coverages? It's always puzzled the hell out of me how some claim Marino did nothing but "go on instinct" and supposedly had little ability to read defenses. It's silly.
Thirdly, what Marino has said of Henne really dosen't require any special "scouting" skills.
A number of us have seen the same things in Henne while adding those positives to how much actual experience he's had the conclusion Marino came to is a pretty simple deduction anyway.

Not gonna say anything, but...

...I didn't say it.
Headcoach material wouldn’t want to work somewhere they’re not trusted with actual football decisions.

yeah and dan also supported damon huard and scot mitchel - howd that pan out???
Mankins has to be top priority. If the Dolphins were looking to trade for him, you have to believe they'll make a hard run at him.
"Making people on the Internet feel better about their own lives since 2004"
i'm actually not that huge a fan of Mankins. I think he'll be too expensive relative to his worth. This is a guy that really gets exposed in the playoffs. Is he good yeah but he is not elite by any stretch. i would personally be more in favor of going after Pouncey in the draft or a player of similar ability in free agency who comes at half or a third of the price. Keeping us in a disciplined cap philosophy is going to be critical as we go forward the next few years and our young players start coming up for new contracts. I dont want to start panicking and overpaying for players

What a ridiculous statement.
They were his backup QB's
:loser:

Dan sure didn't sound like a Henne supporter at the half of each CBS game, and he never disagreed when the other studio guys were hammering Henne.

I don't think Marino's NFL career says much about him being able to break down a QB.
Michael Jordan, the best basketball player of all time, was an abject failure when it came to scouting talent and putting a team together.
Marino = great QB =/= great QB evaluator. I agree with Raf on this one.
Henne has skills, but hes been in the league for long enough to see him and he hasn't really showed anything special imo. Queue the Henne Homers claiming I'm a Henne Hater.
So where are all the Henne haters at? Cat got your tongue.
