Despite Stephen Ross’ fondness and respect for friend and confidante Carl Peterson, the Dolphins owner never has been quite motivated enough to give him a big salary and a lofty title --- a role that would hold appeal to Peterson, according to a friend.
But in some ways, Peterson’s influence over the Dolphins has never been greater, and it’s evident now in his role as Ross’ chief advisor in the general manager search.
Ray Farmer reportedly is a favorite for the Dolphins’ GM job, and it’s no coincidence that he’s the one candidate with whom Peterson worked closely, for three years in Kansas City.
Scott Pioli, the former two-time NFL Executive of the Year, was never a candidate for the Dolphins’ GM job, and it’s no coincidence that Peterson wasn’t a fan of Pioli and is believed to have told Ross as much.
Not only did Pioli replace Peterson in Kansas City, but Peterson’s former Chiefs colleagues called Peterson and bad-mouthed Pioli, according to someone with direct knowledge.
The Dolphins whittled their list of GM candidates on Wednesday, and based on reports (if accurate) and process of elimination, the job should go to Browns assistant GM Ray Farmer, Dolphins assistant GM Brian Gaine or Buccaneers director of player personnel Dennis Hickey --- unless a new candidate surprisingly emerges.

Why are you underwhelmed by Ray Farmer?
-
He's never put together a draft board.
His major experience is in pro personnell.
Doesn't mean he won't be good, but his qualifications as a talent evaluator are non-existentUnlucky 13 and TooGoodForDez like this. -
Peterson sucks.

Shows that no matter what you're dealing with, personal feelings and bitterness can wiggle their way into almost everything. I don't know anything about Farmer beyond whats been reported the last few weeks, and I hope that if he's hired that he's great, but I share the same reservations. Apparently zero history in the draft.
-
Now, has he ever scouted players who are not currently at an NFL level, but could grow to be great players? No.
The man does have scouting qualifications though, to act like he doesn't would be to misunderstand the Director of Pro Personnel position.Steve-Mo likes this. -
I was going to write a reply to his post, but you said everything I wanted to and probably worded it better. -

The rumors have been Farmer as GM and Cander hired in some other capacity. Hearing Xander not a finalist..does mesh with this

I feel as if a lot of the skills these guys are being judged on are somewhat subjective and you never know if a guy is going to be a good GM until he's a GM. And even then good GMs still have really bad years, or really bad ideas. But my feeling is that you simply have to have an eye for talent, regardless of the level at which the player is playing. He presumably didn't just scout all-stars throughout the league, but everyone, including rookies who (you guessed it) just got out of college. So, if he has an eye for talent, that's the most important thing. It doesn't necessarily matter that he's never been a college scout. He can develop a sense of good draft value, and he can develop methods for scouting college players...but he can't develop an eye for talent if he doesn't have it, presuming he doesn't rely solely on statistical analysis, which I don't think he does. -

I'm wondering, and I'm probably not the only one wondering this, if the Incognito incident has anything to do with Farmer being the top candidate?
-
I agree with the first part, though, wholeheartedly. And really, when it starts, I'll be behind whomever we select and hope for the best. Shouldn't all Dolphins fans want the new GM to do well? -
