Why are you underwhelmed by Ray Farmer?

 

He has never been in charge of college scouting and has never had anything to do with the draft.

He's never put together a draft board.

His major experience is in pro personnell.

Doesn't mean he won't be good, but his qualifications as a talent evaluator are non-existent

 

Peterson sucks.

 

Shows that no matter what you're dealing with, personal feelings and bitterness can wiggle their way into almost everything. I don't know anything about Farmer beyond whats been reported the last few weeks, and I hope that if he's hired that he's great, but I share the same reservations. Apparently zero history in the draft.

 

Well, only for college players. To be fair a director of pro personnel is chiefly responsible for pouring over tape of free agents, scouting them to see who will be the best player for the team. He is responsible for knowing which players out of every team in the league will help the most, should they be available. And he's supposed to know they are available.

Now, has he ever scouted players who are not currently at an NFL level, but could grow to be great players? No.

The man does have scouting qualifications though, to act like he doesn't would be to misunderstand the Director of Pro Personnel position.

The rumors have been Farmer as GM and Cander hired in some other capacity. Hearing Xander not a finalist..does mesh with this

 

Dont forget..he also played the game as a LB. I think that adds a good but to the deal as well

 

Go look at the free agents KC signed during his tenure and let me know if it fills you with confidence

 

This is exactly why we shouldn't all just jump off a bridge if Farmer is the pick.

I feel as if a lot of the skills these guys are being judged on are somewhat subjective and you never know if a guy is going to be a good GM until he's a GM. And even then good GMs still have really bad years, or really bad ideas. But my feeling is that you simply have to have an eye for talent, regardless of the level at which the player is playing. He presumably didn't just scout all-stars throughout the league, but everyone, including rookies who (you guessed it) just got out of college. So, if he has an eye for talent, that's the most important thing. It doesn't necessarily matter that he's never been a college scout. He can develop a sense of good draft value, and he can develop methods for scouting college players...but he can't develop an eye for talent if he doesn't have it, presuming he doesn't rely solely on statistical analysis, which I don't think he does.

 

It's not impressive at all.

If he was in charge of pro personnell, and that is cited as his major experience, then the players that KC signed while he was in that role are relevant.

Somebody else may have made the final call, bu Farmer was in charge of the evaluations and recommendations

 

He evaluated pro talent in KC. Last season he was Asst GM, so had his hand in the Browns draft last year.

 

In what way does he suck? Could you be more specific? What was KC's W-L record when he was GM? Or is it in another way that he sucks? Please tell us more oh ye with so many words of wisdom.

 

Who is Cander?

 

Well, whomever gets hired, we're just going to have to sit back and wait to see how they do. No sense in sniveling and whining about it ahead of time.

 

He was a scout for the Falcons for 4 yrs before he went to KC.

I agree with the first part, though, wholeheartedly. And really, when it starts, I'll be behind whomever we select and hope for the best. Shouldn't all Dolphins fans want the new GM to do well?

 

That about clears it all up then doesn't? Hes been a scout. He's been an assistant gm. He's been a director of pro personnel. Wtf else can you ask for

 

You'd think so, yet some fans seem to operate under the AssUmption that whichever decision Ross makes with this hire will be the wrong one. LBsWorstest says they are all 2nd rate candidates, yet cannot produce a list of available better candidates, for example. Reading all these unsupported negative opinions after a while makes one want to gouge out their eyes with a dull wooden spoon.

 

I sometimes think I have more people on ignore than not! I get having concerns and sometimes not agreeing with what the team and Ross are doing. But there are some people on this board that post negative article after negative article, continually draw negative conclusions to every report (whether positive or negative, substantiated or unsubstantiated) and have flooded the board with their opinion. They can't have an intelligent discussion because they are too busy bashing the FO on EVERY post. I would have thought the tone of this board wold be much more positive as we fired Ireland and started a thorough search for a new, competent GM. Instead a few posters have become much more vocal and single minded in the incessant bashing of the FO and everything Dolphins. The negativeness is deafening. It's not all sunshine and rainbows. I get that. We have some problems. I get that. But the beating of the dead horse is getting tiresome.
