• An associate emphasized how appealing the Dolphins would be to Vince Young if Tennessee cuts him as expected, and he’s not out of the question for Miami. But one official who has spoken with the Dolphins said there’s concern about whether Young would be happy as a backup if Chad Henne beat him out. Remember, Young wasn’t happy when he lost his job in Tennessee. Speaking about no one specifically, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said, “You can’t guess about” a quarterback’s “accountability and dependability.” Those have been issues with Young.
• After quarterback and running back, the Dolphins consider finding another pass rusher to be their next biggest priority — either an outside linebacker who could challenge Koa Misi to start, or one who could be an upgrade over free agent backup Quentin Moses, behind starters Cameron Wake and Misi. But options are very limited, and one that intrigued them disappeared when the Bills re-signed Shawne Merriman.
The best in a weak free agent group might be San Francisco’s Manny Lawson, who played for Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in San Francisco. His sacks drop from 6.5 to 2.5 last year but he rushed the passer only 13 times a game and broke up more passes than any other 3-4 outside linebacker. Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, who has played linebacker before, has some rush skills and reportedly is healthy after a neck injury.

I know we had a lot of fans of Manny Lawson just before his draft. The Nolan connection is interesting .

Sports Buzz by Barry Jackson is still the best source of quality Dolphins news down here, bar none. Thx for posting.padre31 and CrunchTime like this. -
I was hoping for the Dolphins to to go OLB early in the draft. Get a good quality pass rusher and an edge setter. Steelers do it with Harrison and Woodley..... a great set of bookends at that spot. We team him up with Wake, move Misi to ILB, send Crowder packing. Easier said than done but then the the front seven is truly built.
Not a fan of Quentin Moses. -
And that reservation sounds very much like the ones most have about Vince Young on the forum, he would add excitement but there is a White Elephant aspect to him, if Henne beats out Young, if Chad has the slightest struggle the outcry for Young would be massive imho.
Honestly, not seeing Koa being replaced outright, not by someone full time, do think they will find a way to upgrade the passrush, Mathias K is more interesting then Lawson imho, one can probably be signed on a 1 yr "prove it" deal, the other will rightfully want a longer term contract.
What is needed imo is a Cam Wake circa 2009 type of player, a OLB/DE who is good on ST and who can maximize pressures in a few snaps, iirc Wake had maybe 190 plays in 2009 and that or slightly more sounds about right to me, Phillip Hunt would have been perfect for that role.
Now the one guy who would make the most sense, Matt Roth, just is not an option, he should be, but I'd doubt they would go in that direction, which means guys like Derrick Harvey and Gholston and Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder could be guys they look at for the role. -
What do you think of that KillahP? But I do think Misi will develop so I'd hate to drop a 4yr roadblock in front of him.

Can't see Matt Roth coming back to Miami based on how he left in 2009. I'm comfortable with Moses coming back as a SOLB backup, but even if he did return there'd still be a need for a better pass-rushing backer to backup Wake. Though, I believe Alama-Francis got an extension last year, so I think he's staying and Moses won't be coming back.

Since they're already screwed at the QB position, this is pretty much the route I figured would be the best to take if you really want to try and win something in 2011. Get a running back, because a rookie Daniel Thomas isn't really going to get the job done the way you'd hope. Then focus on the defense, and start with a pass rusher.
Manny Lawson would be a good shout but you wonder if he's premium enough that he'd want to go somewhere with a guaranteed starting position and wouldn't have to deal with shared snaps. I don't think you really want to shelf Koa Misi, you just want to have a backup plan in case Cameron Wake is dropping off due to the attention he's getting, and Koa Misi isn't picking up the slack. San Fran has three different guys though that I'd be interested in, and one of them could shake off the roster, so I think that's where we probably have to start looking. I think Travis Laboy is set to be a free agent and that job would be perfect for him. The Dolphins already sniffed him a year ago. I thought I saw Parys Haralson being a free agent listed somewhere too. Small, but productive pass rusher this year in that system. Knows Mike Nolan's system.
I think the Redskins are parting with Andre Carter. He was not productive at all in 2010 but those veterans can have comebacks sometimes in the right situations, especially if you limit them down to being just situational pass rushers (i.e. the Trace Armstrong effect). I've always wanted to get hold of Mark Anderson and try him as a situational pass rusher in a 3-4 scheme. If he makes it to free agency, I'd be checking him out. I don't know what Cliff Avril's status is up in Detroit, I thought I saw he was supposed to be a free agent too. If he makes it out of there you'd definitely have to be interested, but he may demand a full time position otherwise he'll just stay in Detroit.
Beyond pass rusher I think the Dolphins should upgrade at safety. I don't like taking the chance that at his age with his extensive injury history Yeremiah Bell really drops off and it proves a serious detriment to the defense. Safeties are important in Nolan's scheme. I'm willing to see more on Chris Clemons, but I wasn't as high on what rookie Reshad Jones did as opposed to say what rookie Nolan Carroll did. Quinton Mikell is a free agent. He's a little older (still like 3 years younger than Yeremiah Bell) and might be in that Brock Marion no-man's land where he's not getting a lot of calls. I would give him a call. -
A veteran name to maybe keep an eye in that search for a passrusher is Mario Haggans, he is a Sam without a position in Denver.

This offseason there is not a whole lot on the "sure to be a FA" market, or names like Antwan Barnes and Matthias K (who would be a great fit) would be more likely targets, and, come on man, Gilderberry? A DT to OLB conversion with a shortened training camp, no OTA's, nothing. -
A deal is likely to get done this month or not at all. If it's done before July, I don't think the off-season is really going to be all that problematic in terms of brevity.

Real issue is does he play ST very well?
Matt K would be a great addition, can play DE or OLB, history with Sheridan I'd guess if they signed him a DB would take his ST duties. -

Giants play 4-3 right? Is Kiwanuka really that great a fit here? I saw limited play from him in which he did his job well. Do we have that same job in Miami?
