The North County Times says Antonio Gates' (foot surgery) status for Week 1 "has yet to be determined."

Everything coming directly from the Chargers has been optimistic, but the reality is Gates' status is totally up in the air. He was unable to run all spring and is unlikely to practice in 11-on-11 drills when camp opens.

Ben Watson (ankle surgery) is expected to begin Patriots training camp on the camp/PUP list.

Players who begin camp on PUP can be activated at any time; Watson going on this list wouldn't mean he's questionable for Week 1. The Pats are careful with offseason surgeries and could use the roster spot on another player.

SI.com's Peter King writes that he heard a rumor "in recent weeks" of a three-way trade that might have sent Jeremy Shockey to the Saints, Jason Taylor to the Giants, and draft picks to Miami.

The Dolphins would've gotten second- and fifth-round picks. The deal is dead now, but it's an indication that the Jints may still be shopping Shockey. King says he doesn't think the Shockey trade rumors will end anytime soon.
