Well, I think that's one of the problems. I think coach Philbin is already a very statistically minded coach. He mentioned passer rating differential during his introductory press conference and seems to have a real good grasp on which stats correlate highly with winning and losing. I sure wish we could see how Philbin would do with a better GM that would employ the statistical analysis you're talking about for player evaluation. But then again, that could be making the same mistake Miami made when they didn't fired Jeff Ireland with Tony Sparano. At some point the team needs to start fresh at both GM and coach. Just not so sure this team should give up on Philbin yet. We'll have a better idea when all the details of this "scandal" are revealed or when this season is over.

 

We've started fresh numerous times. Starting fresh for the sake of starting fresh or staying put for the sake of staying put are equally wrong.

We don't need to blow up everything. We have the right system and the right coach. Now its time to get him a GM he's on the same page with.

Its like every fan is Wile E. Coyote. He'd almost get the road runner save for one unforeseen issue, like an errant pebble in the street. Instead of modifying his rocket skates to deal with pebbles, he'd scrap the entire plan starting all over again.

Philbin is a better coach than any guy we've brought in since Shula. Let's just give him some time.

 

I'm not sure about that. Nick Saban, X's and O's wise, is far superior to Joe Philbin. Philbin's staff is also very underwhelming. Brian Daboll and Mike Nolan look better than Mike Sherman and Kevin Coyle, especially the Nolan to Coyle comparison. Those two were hired by Tony Sparano.

Philbin's got a "long way to go" :shifty: in my opinion.

I think Saban was the best coaching mind we've had since Shula, I guess we'll never find out whether he could adapt to the NFL properly. Oh well.

Jimmy Johnson was probably second best, Philbin third. And third place ain't hard to manage when your competition is Wanny, Cameron and Sparano.

 

I'll just go off potential GM candidates/ teams. This is based off the assumption that a current front office exec working for a team that does statistical analysis will bring those techniques with him. I'll list out all of the organizations I know using stats analysis in some way along with their level of involvement. Some is drawn from my own direct knowledge, others are just from media reports. There are some I don't know for sure, and I'll leave them off.

Personally I've been fairly ok with him till this latest team issue. I just wonder now how great a pulse on the locker room and personnel management he has. Getting everyone on the same page is an important part of coaching, arguably more than Xs and Os which can be given over to coordinators. I'm not sure I see him as a leader/motivator. Underwhelmed I guess, would now be my reaction toward him.

I wouldn't really have a problem (barring rest of the season performance which will ofc have a huge impact) with a new GM basically getting the decision. Retaining the old coach has worked ok for the Jest so far, maybe it can work with Philben. I do not know if he has done enough for me to be considered untouchable though for me.

 

As far as an NFL head coach, Jimmy Johnson was far and away the best coach since Shula left. Unfortunately he had just lost the desire to be a HC which he had earlier in his coaching career.
If we had gotten the same Jimmy Johnson who left UM to take over the Cowboys, I have no doubt the Dolphins would have more than two SB wins right now.

Saban has a great football mind for the minor leagues of football, but as an NFL HC, he wasn't even as good as Dave Wannstedt. Just because Saban has done great as a college coach doesn't mean he wasn't in over his head as an NFL head coach, because he most definitely was.

As far as Philbin is concerned, he might end up being a decent HC, but a record of 11-13 so far certainly doesn't put him at the top of the list just behind Shula.

Right now he on on par with Sparano, and Saban as an NFL head coach.

I'd be happy if Miami got a new GM in here and he was willing to give Philbin a year rather than just immediately fire him to bring in his own guy. Like yourself, I think Philbin has been a pretty solid coach so far. Unfortunately, there's no guarantees that will happen. It's not fair to Philbin, but that's the price this organization is going to pay for not firing Ireland when they should have which was the same time they canned Sparano.

 

Sounds like you're frustration at Ireland not being fired years ago is clouding your view of current events.

Coaching thru adversity....Your gonna see a lot tonight about the command Joe Philbin has on this job, tonight against Tampa Bay. If these guys tank and lose or come out and play hard and win, I think says a lot about the current coaching regime and the command they have on the locker room, as well as the backing of these players.

Superior? Probably. Far superior? No. And there's more to it than Xs & Os as evidenced by him hauling *** because it was too tough and every player hating him.

 

Mid-to-high seems ideal, based on the winning franchises who put that amount of weight on stats analysis in the mix.

Philbin too many of his friends and they hired too many of their friends.

The Mike Sherman, Jim Turner, and his son-in-law. Spring immediately to mind.

Probably 2-4, but not the number 1 is where he turned me against him.
