    Stephen Williams Article & Highlights

Really nice piece from this past pre-season:

Gotta like a player with that size and speed. High praise from Russell Wilson. Should be some great competition for 3-4-5 slots with the two draft choices and adding Williams to the mix. I hope he can break through. Would really be great to see the WR's perform so well that they keep 6. Would be a good sign, imo. If Tanny can improve his deep ball we could have more than one threat deep and that could really put some pressure on DBs.

Doesn't play special teams, that won't help his chances. If he's such a gem, why did Seattle let him walk? not like they are overflowing with good receivers.

They released him to activate Bruce Irvin off his suspension. They went with 4 WRs - Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Sidney Rice and Jermaine Kearse. When healthy, any of those would start in Miami or be at least #3 WRs. They were also hurting on the OL with a couple of injuries to starters over the course of a game or two so they were forced to hold on to 10 O-linemen at the time. Kind of thing happens all the time. Don't doubt they probably would have wanted to keep Williams but he was a casualty of their roster situation. They certainly weren't going to just release one of the other four WRs all of whom were proven contributors. He was eventually put on IR by the Jags (who claimed him off waivers) as a result of an achilles injury.

Given our WR situation, assuming he's healthy, he should be able to add good competition for the 3-4-5 spot. Not arguing he's going to be a stud. But, if he runs good routes, he may fit well into the system.

He looked great as a rookie with the Cardinals. A lot of AZ sports writers were surprised he didn't make the roster, but again, like Seattle last year, the Cardinals had an established core and he was a late release.

Jermaine Kearse would have been cut by Miami

The Dolphins also have an established corp of receivers in Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson. You also have to figure that Landry is fairly certain to earn one of the WR positions because of where he was selected in the draft.

If Williams is not a factor on special teams, I just don't see him on the roster once the regular season begins. The fifth or sixth WR's on the Dolphins have to make their mark on special teams, because they probably aren't going to be used at WR during the regular season unless the Dolphins have a rash of injuries at the position.

Personally I will be surprised if the Dolphins keep a sixth WR on the 53 man squad. So Williams is probably in the battle for the last WR spot with with players like Binn, Matthews, Hazel, and several other WR's now at the bottom of the depth chart.

Williams will also be 28 years old when the season starts. I think the coaches will probably prefer to assign that last WR position to one of the younger WR's on the roster, unless Williams can come in a prove he is far superior to any of the other WR's fighting for that 5th WR spot on the roster.

Good link. I think that the 5-6 spots are WIDE open this summer. You could argue that we have four or five guys fighting for those spots this year who are more gifted than anyone we put out there at the #3 spot in 2012.
