So, there was a Stevenote today.
There’s an App Store coming to OS X. Just like the iTunes Store and the App Store on iDevices, this will sell applications that run on OS X. Also offers direct updates and the 70/30 revenue split just like the iTunes App Store.
The App Store will allow users to download and install applications with just one click, like on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Developers will also be able to take a 70 percent cut of sales through the digital storefront, while Apple keeps 30 percent.
Like on iOS devices, software will be remotely hosted by Apple. But once applications are installed, they will run locally, like traditional software.
In both Lion and Snow Leopard, users will not be tied to the App Store for new software. Jobs said that the App Store will simply be an option for both developers and users, suggesting Mac OS X will not become a "walled garden" like iOS.
Next! A sneak preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. Lion imports some iOS features like the ability to run in full screen, auto saving when you close or move away from the app, and auto resuming when you re-open the app. There’s also Mission Control.
Jobs also announced a new feature, Mission Control, which allows users to view anything running on a Mac and instantly navigate to anywhere. He said this will combine existing features, like Expose, with new ones like full screen.
A demo showing off the Mac App Store showed off the ability to purchase and install Pages with just one click. Applications can also be added to the Launch Pad, which can be selected from the Mac OS X Dock and brings an iPad-style grid of icons and pages onto the screen as an overlay.
Mission Control clusters alike apps, making them easy to select when in Mission Control.
Next! MacBook Air revisions. 13.3’’ model, 11.6’’ model. Starts at $999. No traditional hard drive, it’s all onboard flash storage just like the iPad.
The new hardware has no optical drive and no hard drive, which allows instant-on capabilities. The MacBook Air has memory up to two times faster that is more reliable and 90 percent smaller and lighter, Jobs said.
Both models have a forward-facing FaceTime camera, an Core 2 Duo processor, and Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics.
The new 13-inch model gets 7 hours of battery life (done with "more stringent tests"), with 30 days of standby time. The new MacBook Air has a full-size keyboard and a full-size glass trackpad as well. The 13.3-inch display is 1440-by-900 pixels.

Apple on Wednesday announced a FaceTime application for Mac OS X, allowing Mac users to engage in video chat conversations with one another, as well as owners of the iPhone 4 and iPod touch.
Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said that Apple, to date, has shipped more than 19 million FaceTime devices. The video chat feature was previously available for the iPhone and iPod touch.
FaceTime functionality is available today via apple.com in a beta release. Jobs said the addition of the Mac will bring tens of millions of new users to the open video chat standard.

Demoed on stage was Groove Matching, called "like an automatic spell checker" for syncing up instruments according to a beat in GarageBand. Flex Time can also take individual recordings and drag them out to extend sounds.
New piano lessons will also rate in real time how a user is doing. A percentage in the bottom left hand corner shows how accurately a piano performer has played a particular song. The feature also works with guitar.

mor911forum_veteranMy only complaint about the MBA is the power. Seems very under powered. I know you make sacrifices for size. But that thing is weaker than my year + old MBP.

It’s an ultraportable. They aren’t going to put a Core i5 in there. Just be glad they didn’t use an Atom.

You’re describing an alternate universe Apple. They lead the industry in customer support quality. There’s something like a 15 point difference between Apple and the nearest competitor in customer satisfaction, which I think is HP, but don’t quote me on that.

MBA...wow. That's impressive to get that kind of power inside something that portable. There's almost no reason right now to buy a crap baby computer netbook. They're next to useless for the battery life you get. I'm glad Apple is getting into that market and its form factor.

The iPad is Apple’s netbook destroyer. The MBA is for the thin and light market.

I would've bought the iPad if it had a keyboard and USB outlets for external storage on the spot...essentially the 11" MBA. Instead I got the 13" MBP.

No exaggeration, he's so computer illiterate, he honestly didn't know what a space bar was for.
I have him taking baby steps with it, and he is absolutely in love with it and he hasn't even opened the App store yet.
I wanted him to get it because of his lack of knowledge and the intuitive nature of it. Just thought I'd share.

I think they’re being a bit premature. Those technologies aren’t collectively dead, but are definitely in the ICU. Optical media for app distribution in particular, thanks to the combo of the App Store and the new flash drive installer.

They need to allow for Flash already.
Many major websites use Flash (for example any auto manufacturer, for starters). When I'm just on my couch watching tv and browsing the internet, my iPad can't view many websites like my netbook can due to things like this. That is kind of irritating, if I'm being honest. I'm also not a fan of the iPad registering on many websites as a cell/mobile device, so it defaults to mobile versions of some websites.
I don't know what the deal is why Apple can't just get on board with Flash though (I know what they say is the reason, but I think it's weak). The rest of the world uses it and it's pretty much a standard.
