Eh, I think there is a difference between the goal and expectations.
This team had known difficiencies going into the season. Those aside, as far as the unknowns, I'd agree that there was more good than bad.

No need to "Ugh" it. Thats exactly what he should be saying publicly. He shouldn’t be saying that they are planning to go out and spend a ton in FA. It has zero positive benefit other than create a little excitement among Fin fans during January, which is worthless in the big picture.
Declaring they are going to go out and spend big money puts unneeded pressure on the team/FO. What if they are shelling out the money, but players don’t come? Its egg on the face of the organization, plus leaves the fans yelling in protest for false promises, even if the team itself was willing to pay whatever it took… it still looks as though they were being cheap and lied.
Plus, it just gives the agents of the FA’s more leverage in negotiations b/c they know that the team would not want the above scenario to happen, so they can ask for more b/c the team wont want to look bad or like liars.
Nothing is gained from declaring you are going to spend big money in FA well before FA even begins. IMO, this actually was a very good move by Ross, and one that he may not have made when he first took over the team. IMO, it shows that our owner is learning some of the finer points of the public relations aspect that goes into owning a team.Ducken, LiferYank, Killer Bees and 8 others like this. -
He didn't say anything we haven't heard before.
I'm not gonna go nuts over the fA comments as I guess you don't want to look like a clown, claiming that you'll outbid anybody for any free agent. But there was nothing particularly reassuring in these remarks, as it relates to whether or not Ross knows how to figure out whether somebody is or isn't doing a good job.
I appreciate that Ireland is intelligent and hard working, but those skills haven't necessarily translated to him performing in the job he has nowoakelmpine likes this. -
There are ways to do that, while still assuring your fan base that you are doing everything possible to win.
Instead of going off about how free agency has never improved a team (which is ridiculous) just say, "We will explore every avenue, but drafting good players is the ideal way."Bpk, oakelmpine, dolfan22 and 1 other person like this. -
Not a million contradictions.
You don't say you'll outbid anyone for a player and spend whatever it takes and in the next breath say free agency doesn't work, which is an absurd statement on its face. Maybe he meant free agency doesn't work when Jeff Ireland is your GM. Because that's true. -
I happen to agree with his opinion about the right coach and the right QB.Two out of three is not bad but not good enough to get fans enthused again .There is still a rotten apple in the barrel.

I dont think he said that FA has never improved a team. Pretty sure he said you cant build a winner through FA, you build a winner through the draft. And that is true. You cant build a team through FA. The Redskins tried for a decade and failed miserably. However, you can build a winner through the draft with a couple of nice FA's sprinkled in here and there.
