yeah I think there will be major changes to preseason next year.. the NFL isn't going to risk hurting their brand by losing key players to IR. I can see a two game preseason next year and no starters will play. More scrimmages/duo practices in shorts with a red jersey'd quarterback on both teams.
Expect some UGLY football in September if that happens as you see it. Why the knee jerk reaction? The preseason isn't a new thing. We've had a couple of years with some prominant guys going down, but that isn't normally the case. I see it as an abberation.
One of those few occasions where I actually wished DJ Swearinger's career to end in the worst possible way. ****ing karma, man. Houston waived his sorry ***, but Tampa picked him up, last I heard.
The pre-season shouldn't be shortened. It's important to see young guys play. You've got 90 guys on the roster and 2 games isn't enough time to evaluate them. Look at someone like Chris McCain. Guy balls out in practice, doesn't do **** but run into people during the actual game. Then you've got guys like Zach Vigil, who need to demonstrate consistency over a period of time (which he has, called that one). Don't want star players to get hurt? The coaches have every right not to play them. Most of these star players are vets and don't need pre-season anyway.
Well if the NFL is serious about the rumors of the Minor league starting up next year I think we could see a reduction of the pre-season games.
College football does fine without preseason, i think professional football players can figure it out as well. 18 game regular season, more wildcard teams, less preseason.
Most big time college programs play several games against lower level schools who they pay off for an easy win at the start of the season. No one's warming up against Arkansas St. In the NFL.
It's a double edged sword. You have people trying to make the team and thus go balls out. Then you have people who know they're safe who (usually) play half speed. Playing half speed will get you hurt.
I can remember having to sit thru 6 preseason games followed by a 14 game schedule.Whoever won the superbowl had an extra preseason game against college all stars too.
Because the NFL is charging FULL PRICE to watch pre-season games, they will not stop them. Phans still show up to watch and pay all that money. It's all about the $$$$.
its a joke..philosophy needs to change...theres no logic behind it...just money..coaches will adapt if you change the rules..
