During the last Super Bowl played in Miami, the NFL was upset because part of the game was played in the rain. The NFL has basically demanded that the county and the state help fund renovations to the stadium so fans don't have to sit in the rain at another SB. I wonder if now the NFL is going to demand that New Orleans and the state are required to spend millions of dollars to ensure that power doesn't go out at another SB in New Orleans. The lights going out today has disrupted the game far more than a little rain did when the game was last played in Miami. Also with the score of the game today being so lopsided at this time, there is no telling how many fans turned off the game and are now watching something else on TV. I bet the NFL is wishing the game was being played in the beautiful weather of Miami today, not in a half lighted stadium in New Orleans.
No one can predict a power surge like that though. The only way to stop that would be HUGE, and I mean, HUGE backup generators. All of them would have to have HUGE transfer switches and unless they go to very expensive LED, or Induction lighting, they would have to have a seperate bank of Metal Halide lights for each section. Because they have to cool off until they can come back on. That is really super super expensive but I would not doubt it if the NFL tries to require it to EVERY SB hosting stadium.
