Tannehill on Philbin: "Obviously it doesn't feel good. Creates a stir/distraction...

Wait did I miss something? Philbin never said anything any different.

I guess Bill Lazor disagrees with your sentiment then..because he had no issues supporting Tannehill.

In fact Lazor was the only one to say something publicly..well outside of Tannehill..

And if your choosing Philbin as to who handled this correctly..your in the vast minority

Lazor, on the other hand, the guy who spends the most time with him and should know exactly what his problems are, guaranteed Tannehill would start, so I don't see your point.

Why should anyone care about Tannehill feelings? He should focus more on being a better QB...right now, he s****!

Why would he commit to a substandard player? Philbin is horrible, but so is Tannehill, Coyle, And Lazor! No good options.

A lot of team distractions originate within the team, Ray Rice, Jonathon Martin etc... What I believe Ryan was inferring is that this wouldn't even be an issue had the media (outside) not contrived it.

From what Lazor said the coaching staff hasn't even considered benching Ryan so this whole thing is all about Philbin being "cute" with an answer and then being too stubborn to clarify himself.

Why is it a head coach feel he must continue with his doomed ways when it's clear that it's dragging the team down and frustrating them? Especially when it jeopardizes said head coach's job? Is it ignorance? Or is it ego/pride?

I can't think of many specific examples at the moment, help me out if you can... but there's been many head coaches in the league who have come and gone because they insisted on carrying on with failed methodologies and decisions and proceeded to get themselves fired... what were they expecting? An extension for effort??

Philbin can't seriously believe things will turn around if he doesn't get better at this coaching and managing personalities thing ASAP....

There is no answer Philbin could give that wouldn't cause mayhem.

    - If he said Tanny was the starter people would complain that Moore isn't starting.
    - If he said Moore was the starter people would complain that Tanny isn't starting.
    - If he's non committal then people complain he's causing a distraction.

That's true about any individual thing, people are going to have dissenting opinions about virtually everything.

Saying Tannehill was the starter was by far the most reasonable action.

Sure, but I think you understand the point.

Saying Tannehill is the starer is not the reasonable thing, he's playing poorly after all. Saying he isn't the starter is not the reasonable thing either, because Philbin's fate is tied to Tannehill. Maybe taking the route he did will light a fire under Tannehill. Maybe it won't. But acting like there's a clear cut answer at this point and Philbin is blowing it, makes no sense.

(I'm in no way saying Philbin is doing the right thing by the team overall. I'm just saying this particular consternation over a coach being non committal to the press over a player who is playing poorly is absurd.)

No one ever doubted that Tannehill was the starter to begin with. It was a loaded question, as Fin D pointed out.

If anyone thinks this goes away with a simple "Tannehill is the starter" from Philbin they're dreaming. This goes away when Tannehill strings together a few good games and wins, not before.

Great point, and if the media attention alone is in fact "the distraction," then it's likely there would've been at least some of that no matter what. Even if you say Tannehill remains the starter, obviously the media was already asking the question, and so there's likely to be follow-up with the team by the media. If the media asks the players what they think of Joe Philbin's statement that Ryan Tannehill will remain the starter, isn't that a similar sort of "distraction"?

In other words, when the starter isn't playing well, and he has little or no track record of sustained quality play in the first place, and the team isn't doing well, there's going to be some level of "distraction" regardless, because the team isn't functioning with a quality quarterback. There's already some degree of a "quarterback controversy" there in the first place, hence the media's questions about it to begin with.

It's ok....here in a few weeks they will be asking Tannehill if Philbin is going to be the head coach next week. He can return the favor. Philbin doesn't deserve to be a head coach in this league. We need a coach that has HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE!! Stop trying to make a coordinator a head coach.

The first one doesn't start a controversy, or a headline that has stuck on the front pages for half a week now. You're first round, #8 overall pick in his 3rd year getting the start is not controversial. The only ones rumbling about Moore not starting are a few fringe on message forums.

There's no way in hell the local media wouldn't start the talk of Moore starting. There'd be articles titled "Is it time to start Moore?" by Armando. They'd get picked up by Cole or PFT. Then we'd start hearing the national guys think we should start Moore, even though they quoted one article from Armando. From there other local guys will start asking why Moore isn't the starter in PCs. Then everyone will start the "where there's smoke there's fire" threads.

You've been around long enough to know this to be true.

Philbin was wrong to speak out in the way he did (or be noncommittal). But, RT needs to quite whining. The reason for the problem is largely on RT. If he plays well - there is no trouble.

But, Philbin has also been very poor at helping his players along and his public statements are just ... poor. Obviously, we all are human. But, the guy is making millions and he should have some better ways of handling things on a PR level.

Just got a message from my ESPN app, Joe Philbin says he regrets causing a distraction but will still not name a starting quarterback. Uhm, what?

you prove my point. Local media. This headline is front page of all th national rags. You can't sit here and pretend Philbin confirming Tanny is the starter would get 20% this attention. He's been the starter for 2 full years.

Tannehill needs to shut the **** up. When peoples expectations are you'll make us forget about Andy Dalton but all you do is make us remember Chad Henne distractions are going to arise. It is not possible for a QB to play like total dog**** without creating distractions. Period.

First you blamed Sherman. Now you're passing the blame on to Philbin. Look in the ****ing mirror buddy. If you want to avoid distractions:
    play better!!!!

Oh, sorry. I didn't realize you were doing that thing you do where you change the goalposts or definitions of things just to keep an argument going.

My point is simple, controversy would follow any of the 3 different avenues Philbin could have taken with that question. If you want to pretend it matters if the controversy starts on a local or national level you can do that if you want to, but this controversy did in fact start locally (not nationally), so I'm not sure why you think its an important distinction.

Joe Philbin everyone. Some of us are not surprised. The ****ing idiot shouldn't have been hired to begin with, let alone given another season after last years total collapse. What has he done to earn loyalty and tenure? He's CLEARLY over matched.

If we lose in London? Wow.

I really don't think ryan has any innate ability to anticipate where the Pressure is coming from, nor do I think he has any innate ability to escape once it's there..right now he's a pendulum..no feel for as to where to find the open man, nor the multitasking ability to reshuffle and locate it..I've seen him run and locate an open man maybe 5 times in 35 games..Luck does it 5 times a game, it's called making plays

Oh he's been blamed plenty before...it's all over. He's getting blamed for a lot more now though, which is a bit silly considering all the other issues...starting with the coaches on down the line. Again, I'm NOT saying he doesn't deserve criticism...I clearly said I think he does. But some people (and you know exactly who) would have everybody believe he's the sole problem...and that's plain stupid.

What if he is the sole problem, how would anything look different?

Here's an example: I don't have to watch a single Jacksonville snap to know that when Henne is starting everything from the head coach to the ball boy is going to look like **** to the fans. Is that true or false?
