Well, we obviously upgraded at Kick Returner, and Bess is unbelievable on punts, so nothing to worry about.

Well, starting field position is such an edge to have as well, but only a team with a settled Wr corps and OL really can carry one, ditto on the Dline/secondary.

To carry one as active you have to be willing to sacrifice that 8th OL/6th DE/#4 Wr/9th Lb.

I don't think John Beck was very good at returning kicks at all.

Soooooo ****ing what. He was a TERRIBLE receiver. Nolan Carrol, who we got with the 5th round pick we got for him not only had a better overall KR average last year, he actually....wait for it.....CONTRIBUTED AT HIS POSITION.
With that said, Ted Ginn will always have a special place in my heart for showing up to play the Jests! lol

He didn't do much but beat the Jets every time we played them. His best games was against the Jets. Can't hate a player who did that.

Wasn't it Ginn that lost the Indy game for us when the ball hit both of his hands and then he drops a sure TD??

Yessir, have to give Ginn that the title "Jet Killer" does buy him some place in Dolphins lore.

But he scored two TD's today. Who do we have that can do that ? I have no confidence in anyone on our squad.

Ginn could have contributed as a returner and fifth receiver on this squad. Being we brought in some team speed, I can't say I am really bitter about shipping him away though. He seems to be happy in San Francisco so I can only hope he does good things there.

LOL That was really bad. I did like the hustle and forcing the fumble that SHOULD have been a touchback.

Ginn is virtually always well below average on a per-return basis in both kicks and punts. It's not at all worthwhile to sit there and watch him destroy your return game week after week waiting for his one game a season and hoping it is when you actually need it.

We need someone who consistently makes good decisions and quality returns. Not someone who ****s around week after week with godawful vision waiting for someone to blow their discipline on the edge of the field, where your average returner would still be getting you game-altering yardage, even if it isn't touchdowns.

Oh geez, to rewind the motive tape on the Ted Ginn jettison, look no further than the grandstands.
The fandom had the pitchforks out, perhaps in part due to Ginn's propensity for ducking out, which may have led to Ireland's decision to priority ship him out, rather than explore the market cashing out, on whatever value Ginn may, or may not have retained.

I'm happy he's having success in San Francisco. He was always a hard worker and I hope he keeps it up.

Granted, he was never meant to be a #1 receiver but to say as a receiver he was nothing, is ridiculous. He averaged 42 catches a season when he was in Miami and that would be ok for a #3 or #4, and when he burned the "great" Darrelle Revis, he could not honestly be called "nothing".

He wasn't a great receiver, but your comments are over the top hyperbole.

Yet, Miami so wisely (not) waived the one man best suited to take advantage of that aspect for us. Instead of the typical Cobbs kick return, 15 yds and a cloud of dust, we'll have the Bess kick return, 20 yds and a cloud of dust...so we got that going for us...which is nice.

I don't agree his averages in 2007 and 2009 were mediocre. He also had a few other solid returns besides the TDs. In those years he was a solid above average kick returner who should have been returning punts too.

  37. MrClean

We seldom if ever have more than 7 OL active and Ginn wasn't so bad a receiver that he couldn't be the 4th WR too. I don't think we have 6 DEs or 9 LBs active for most games either.

Didn't hear about him much of last season as he was injured. But its true I think 2-3 games a year we hear his name.

  39. MrClean

    MrClean Inglourious Basterd Club Member

Carroll averaged 24.3 last season and in his last season in Miami, Ginn averaged 24.9. Carroll is fast enough, but he hasn't shown the instincts as a return man to give me hope he'll ever take one to the house. He isn't on the depth chart as a returner this season anyway. We got Bess and maybe Gates to look forward to. Ireland had a chance to atone for his ridiculous give away of Ginn, by keeping Livas, but instead decided to continue with the return man being a point of secondary emphasis.
