http://helptutorservices.com/blog/the-32-most-commonly-misused-words-and-phrases/ Some of my biggest pet peeves on one list! It's missing "Could NOT care less"......not the far to commonly misused "Could care less"!!!!!
These are common, but why are they pet peeves of yours? Do you honestly expect everyone to communicate in perfect grammar? As long as you can understand what they are trying to say, I don't see the problem. I could care less.
my favorite: who gives a ****/ no one cares: Why they mean the same thing for instances of grammar correction it should be who gives a ****? For all other instances feel free to use no one cares.
I blame people for not realizing that language is alive and always changing. People do not live in english class.
The language is important because, now more than ever, communication is VITAL. It's important to communicate clearly more than ever because we "speak" most often now through electronic media, where voice inflection and body language are lost. In order to communicate effectively we need language; and in order for language to work as it should, it needs to remain universally constant. Genuine ignorance is a shame and we should work to eliminate it; the real shame is that a country with the resources of the United States is far outpaced by a country like Cuba in terms of literacy. But willful ignorance (or willful misuse) shows a laziness and a stupidity that is beyond comprehension in an age in which the entire knowledge of the world literally is at the fingertips of everyone with internet access.
I always said that "irony" is the most misused word. People use it in place of "coincidence" all the time without knowing the actual meaning of the word.
Actually, it was one interpretation when I was young and in school that clarified that up for me, and I remember it to this day. I forgot the teacher, but he/she said "an example of irony is an olympic swimmer drowning in a bath tub". For some reason, that stuck with me, and looking back it really is a great example of an ironic situation.
# 7 on the list-`Could of` instead of `could have`, is what aggravates me the most. Don`t know why it just does.
ok let me be the nit picker: Actually it should be "I could not care less". That way you are basically saying "it is impossible for me to care less than I do" . If you were to say "I could care less", than that means that you care a little bit, but could care a little bit less. Confused yet?
If im writing something thats important from a career standpoint, I go through and spellcheck and all that good stuff. But round here, I could care less
Sorry guys I simply had to throw this one in there!! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKgPY1adc0A"]YouTube- Bush "Fool Me Once..."[/ame]
What are you nit picking? Thats exactly what I said, and the point - it's improper and inaccurate to use "Could care less!" !!!!!
Tecnically, "alright" is a word. It's an adverb and is in the dictionary. "All right", is the more formal useage. /Stiches'd
That word was my pet peeve for so long. People used it so much, Webster added it to the dictionary a few years back. I also hate when I hear people say they want to AXE a question. It's ASK. I always get my mother-in-law on that one. And people use the word "that" too much. You could delete it from most sentences.
His Math may even be better than his English. Yeah I wonder if we could have fit him in our back pack?
wtf is wrong with you guys! putting him in your backpack? you hang him upside down by his ankles and tell him if he doesnt do it then you'll kill his dog.
This is ironic, or coincidental or whatever, but this thread is filled with the 32 most commonly annoying posters...
Nah than is Fiance would hunt u down and kill you. You can do whatever to Pete but dont **** with the dogs.
I see nothing wrong with "Could care less." Couple more along the same lines. "I should be so lucky." "Tell me about it."
