OC or QB 1st ? Do you go get an OC who then gets to pick his QB ? Or do you go get a QB that will attract a really good OC ? Two million $ questions for the Dolphins to discuss.
Get a good OC, beef up the running game, add some play makers, and I think the QB issue will go away on it's own.
You have to get an OC first. It shouldn't even be debated. I would expect to have one by the end of next week as Sparano said he wants to move fast on it.
A QB coach that knows how to develop a QB and an OC that can put together a logical game plan will help the QB issues as well.
Well, mid January, we hired Nolan in late January, so there is still plenty of time as even if VY is on the table he will not be released until March 7th right before his 12.5 million dollar bonus comes due, he will be a FA as the NFL season will have rolled over on March 4.
If your a good developer of QBs, then you don't have much of an excuse not to want to work with Chad Henne. Physically everything is there. He's tall, he's tough, great arm, and doesn't shy away from the pocket. Chad Henne's problems are reading coverages and going through progressions. I know im not a coach or anything but isnt that what an OC/QB coach are supposed to help a QB work through? Now that Lucks not coming out, Mallet and Locker's draft status just sky rocketed. Our best chance at a good season next year is still Henne.
There is no chance Henne takes a snap as a starter here next year unless things go horribly wrong. Sparano almost got canned largely because of Henne's play. No chance he puts him on the field again.
Teflon Tony would have to have a career death wish to stick with Henne, he can say what he will about hugs and flowers now, he knows Ross was out to end his time in Miami if he sticks with Henne his changes of being fired rise exponentially. I'd take a shot with Thigpen before I would consider Henne.
Lol. Ok, whatever you say bro. I'm sure a guy trying to keep his job is going to simply play the guy he benched last season. And the GM charged wit putting together an exciting offense is not going to find a replacement for the guy who lead the 31st ranked scoring offense. Ok. I'm naive
Even the thought of going with Thigpen is laughable. We would have the #1 pick if Thigpen was our starter this year.
You're quite naive, yes. This thread is about how to move forward and make the team better, and what our priorities should be in that regard. You jump in with some crap about Henne sucks blah blah, almost got TS fired blah blah blah, completely ignoring the topic. Trolling, basically. If you want to bash Henne, start a thread or find one of the other 1000 Henne threads, but don't try and hijack someone else's.
Henne's problems run much deeper than reading coverages and progressions... There are physical limitations in his game that prohibits him from making plays, and limitations that actual limit him in basic execution, that the position requires, to be diverse. I moved on from Henne after 8 games, I had seen enough film to do so...I don't think Sparano can take any more chances on him so we all should probably move on.
Agree completely. Imo, Henne is just slow both mentally and physically. Yesterday, I'm watching the aging, oft injured Matt Hasselback and he's aggressive, he knows what he's doing and more than that, he's quick on the field. That's what Brees is; that's what I'm seeing in Aaron Rodgers as well. He's moving quickly on the field and aggressive (that is a combination of mental, physical and instinctive qualities). Yet, while these QBs are quick, they don't look like they are hurrying. As to the OP - I just don't see it as any debate. Players aren't going to make decisions any time soon about teams and a team has to have an OC to get his system in place and the entire offensive staff on board. Further, there aren't any QBs out there (we certainly aren't going to wait until after the Draft to get an OC! That would be ridiculous) that would draw an OC in. But, Sparano needs to get an OC. In fact, the entire offensive staff needs to go - it is about changing the culture and if we try to - in any way whatsoever - "stay the course" it will be a disaster, imho. The guys I would look at and aggressively pursue: John Ramsdell (Chargers); James Urban (Eagles); and Joe Lombardi (Saints) - all QB coaches on teams with very good offensive systems. Also, I would consider Hugh Jackson. But, they also need better QB play.
Jesus tap dancing Christ people, this is not a bash Henne thread. GTFO if that's what you want to do. We don't need EVERY single thread on this forum to be full of this ****. This place is getting more and more painful to read every single day. To the point, you most certainly have to get an OC first. You want him to have input on the QB you bring in and the offensive personnel on the team.
it is our biggest issue...I believe a big part of this conundrum {pun intented} were in is Henne related...sorry ok bye..
If you have a good QB that question is easy to answer .You adapt to the QB. If you dont have such a QB you have to find one and if you do find one your future is assured .If you dont you will be consumed by the vortex of NFL failures. In summary you need to find a QB to be a successful coach in the NFL.
If you don't have a good QB, you protect him with a running game and surround him with play makers so that he doesn't have to carry the offense aka the exact opposite of what we did with Henne this year. Upgrading @ QB is easier said than done, fixing the OL and skill positions is much easier by comparison so I think we should go in that direction.
OC has to come first. AS far asQb choice, I say Keep Henne and I'm way on board the Blaine Gabbert bandwagon. Gabbert will take some time to learn how to play under center and, when he's ready, Henne can be his back-up. Maybe, god-forbid, a new coaching staff can develop Henne and then we could have 2 young Qb's. Wouldn't that be a nice change, an extra Qb for trade bait.
Lol,tucking your head straight down and running into the lineman means you are not shying from the pocket?
There was a game against Buffalo, when the "K-Gun" was TRUCKING everyone...and I mean EVERYONE. Tom Olivadotti, of all people developed a 2-3-4 or some such that completely KILLED the K Gun. I remember that game so........Brilliantly, like it was the sun. THAT game showed me what a coach could do for a team. You get the OC.
As much as I doubt Mcdaniels is coming here (because of his icy relationships with Marshall and Nolan) I see us taking on a NE OC--Mangini. If it isn't Mangini or an offensive guy who knows how to turn a decent QB into a great system QB then I'm going to be pretty peeved. Carson Palmer with McDaniels Pedigree is nice, but so is Mangini with Palmer.
I remember that game well too. It was the '92 game in Buffalo. The adjustment was made early in the game. Enberg and Trumpy thought Tom Olliv was nuts to go with two DLineman. We eventually won the game 37-10.
it depends upon the type of coach you have ..... if you have a system guy - then you must have the OC 1st .... if you're a real coach and can find ways to put players in positive situations based on the talent you have -- then you can have the QB already there ..... could Flacco or Big Ben flourish in a WC style offense - probably not .... can Henne still be a Flacco - i for one still believe so, but he needs help to flush this year and all the work he did last offseason to 'try' and be Pennington.
You get whichever guy you can get first. Just make sure the OC is flexible enough to adapt his playcalling to the QB, whoever he ends up being.
First order is find a line coach that can get Carey back in shape. Then get the rest of the line in order. Who is the center, will our recently drafted guards get healthy? Do we need to upgrade or can we focus on other areas? After that its about finding at least one chuck yardage player in the receiver core. Someone who can create separation would be nice to allow Marshall and Bess to do more damage underneath. I don't know that Henne and Teflon Tony can work together though after this year though. But I hate the idea of trading for another QB or using another high draft pick on one again.
I think this year is different than most seasons for a number of reasons & so should be our priorities. 2011, the priority: QB OC OffensiveLine RB the only conundrum lies with the coaching of the team
