It was speculated but I don't think Texas would trade one disappointing former prospect for an older more disappoint former prospect.
He was solid last year but if you take a look at his career numbers he has alternated between good and bad years. Plus we just drafted a LOOGY in the rule 5 draft, though his name escapes me at the moment.
Just found this nugget for youz guyz, per rotoworld: The Marlins and Josh Johnson have reportedly agreed to a $1.4 million contract for 2009. Johnson was eligible for arbitration for the first time. If he hadn't missed a year following Tommy John surgery, he likely would have commanded at least twice this amount, forcing the Marlins to trade an additional two or three veterans. Source: South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Nice to hear. $1.4m might wind up being a bargain if Johnson stays healthy and pitches consistently. Kind of a foregone conclusion after trading Scott Olsen though.
I think this goes to the core of what they think of their catching prospects, and it means they are not satisfied and are turning over every leaf to find a hidden gem.
Right now I think its Hermida in left, Maybin in center and Ross in right, with perhaps someone from AAA or AA coming up to fill in on the bench. I don't think Amazega will be back.
If that's the lineup, I hope Hermida has been working on improving his fielding skills. That's going to be just as important as hitting practice.
Well supposedly the move from right to left is supposed to hide his weak defense.....I don't know if I agree with that. But there is still the distinct possibilty he never wears a Marlins uniform ever again if the right offer comes along.
You know what the classical method for hiding poor defense is? Coaching the guy. I like Fredi as a person, but he has not demonstrably improved this roster. Can anyone think of a single player who has improved his game because Fredi and his staff brought the talent out of him? I can't.
Desi you and I may disagree wholehartedly on politics, but damn bro, we think along the same darn lines when it comes to baseball and Freddi G. I think the only reason he stays is because Larry Beinfest can control Freddi like a little puppy dog. Beinfest sacrifices something (like real coaching) to have his little marrionette doll (Freddi) in the dugout that he can pull the strings of anytime he wants. I've yet to see Freddi ever standup for himself.....and likewise I rarely in 2 seasons have seen Freddi standup for his players.
Fanhouse claims that the Red Sox offered us Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury for Hanley Ramirez, who would move to CF for the Sox. Of course, we turned it down. Side note: is it just me or is that blog entry so busy praising the Red Sox and Theo Epstein that the Marlins turning the deal down is only mentioned in passing? Somehow, Theo Epstein is great for attempting to rip us off and getting turned down in the process! I'm really getting tired of the Noo Yawk/Bahstahn focus of the media.
Yes it's annoying but I am glad they turned this one down. I have always maintained that this ownership will never pay a player $ 10 million + a year, and I am still skeptical it will happen. Ellsbury & Buchholz is not enough in my opinion. It is what it is.....its like in the NFL most of the damn media time is wasted with the Dallas Cowboys. Mind you this is franchise that hasn't won a playoff game in 12 years Why are they the focus, when other franchises have done so much more for the NFL ?
Feb 13th looms.....its the big day for the votes for the new stadium. Both the Miami-Dade commisioners and the City of Miami commisioners vote to fund the stadium on that day. Here are the latest "official" artist renderings of the proposed Marlins stadium......
Looks great. But what happened to the parking garage? Man, getting in and out of that stadium really is going to be a pain.
Alright, that looks manageable, then. But this stadium is screaming for highway access. Getting out is going to be hell.
Same as when it was the Orange Bowl.....actually remember the OB handled crowds of 70,000+. The capacity of the Marlins stadium will be around 37,400.
In the first picture it looks like it may have a retrackable roof, is that the case? If so I think its going to have a hard time getting the votes to pass it. But hey I'm rooting for the Marlins to get a new stadium, same for the Rays too.
yes, at the very least the stadium needs some sort of roof, south fl weather is so wet and rainy that a roof is a must
What ? Why would you think it would have a hard time getting passed if it has a retractable roof ? Do you know the # 1 reason people in polls have said they won't go to Marlins games ? WEATHER ! Too often we have rain delays, or rain outs, its extremely hot...etc. The retractable roof eliminates all of that.
Well lets qualify that....SUMMER weather is often rainy. Tonight excepted, its only rained 4 or 5 times since Nov 1st.
Because a retractable roof costs what over 200 million to build (on top of the cost of building the rest of the stadium)? No one shows up as it is, do you really think that tax payers would be willing to pay that off? I don't know the answer but I do have a hard time seeing that go through.
Dude did you read my last post or what ? WEATHER is the # 1 reason people don't go to the games.....if you build that stadium and don't put a cover on it, it won't change a thing. That is the number 1 priority for the stadium. Do you follow the Marlins or another team ? I can't believe someone that follows the Marlins would even say that.
Did you read my last post? It's all about the money. Do you think that people will be willing to pay an extra 200 million for the roof on top of the money it costs to build the rest of the stadium, especially in these economic times? I realize that people cite the weather as the problem that people don't go to the games but it is possible that the majority of the people in South Florida just don't care about the team. Hey it happens. Again I will be surprised (yet happy) if they got that stadium plan passed, however I don't think it will happen. Just look at the Twins who are building a new park but could get the funding for a roof. People in South Florida complain about the weather in the summer but can you imagine playing in Minnesota in April and September/October?
And did you know that much of the money for the stadium has already been collected and that NO MONEY for the stadium is coming from residential taxes ? The hotel surtax has been collected since 2002, and is around $ 400 million so far, with the city and the county putting those monies into the project. The Marlins are contributing $ 172 million of their own money (which just about covers the roof doesn't it ? ) So what is the problem ?
I didn't know that, do you have any link(s) to some of those statements above? I'm not doubting you by any means I just never heard about any of it until just now. Anyway again I'll still believe it when I see it and I do hope it gets done.
In 2002 we voted for it....a tourist bed tax that only could be used for a stadium project in the future. Anytime someone spends a $1 on a hotel room in Miami-Dade County, 2¢ is added for the Bed Tax.
