If he sucks, you get rid of him.

Although if he doesn't suck but the team still only does avg, he may still get tossed by association with this regime unfortunately.

Usually tho, good qb play is directly related to winning.

 

Henne's in a lose-lose here. If he has a breakout year, it still may not be enough because of the holes and lack of skillset talent around him, not to mention what is our OL going to do or for that matter, who is our OL going to be... He can go 20/12 and 3500+ yrds, which would be a vast improvement and considered decent stats for a QB and still be jettisoned with a new regime next year if we don't show marked improvement and ability to contend (BTW, those are Orton's avg. stats as a starter). The only way he hangs around here is a) if he has that decent or better year statistically and b) having that good year is enough for Ross to keep the current regime around.

That might be too tall an order to ask for... and with Ross...who really knows ??

 

Well as for this season if Henne bombs out they will insert Moore and play ground and pound imo, if Henne has modest success they offer him a 3 yr extension as they have bet to heavily on him to let him walk.

 

I think if he doesn't show marked improvement (say 3500 yards 20 TDs <14 INTs) this season the team has to get serious about a legit QB. If we have to give up a healthy amount of picks to get Landry Jones or Andrew Luck, then so be it.

Ross has to look at this from a business standpoint. The NFL is entertainment and most people like their entertainment to be erm entertaining. Watching a bad/mediocre QB is not entertaining and not worth a family of four spending $500 for a three hour game.

Henne doesnt break out this year he is replaced. The new regime will cut him after trying unsuccessfully to trade him

 

Draft a QB high regardless of the outcome.

 

REally his future is up to him and the new offensive scheme. If he and the offense play well and deliver, he will get an extension. If not, it's pretty simple, he'll be pounding sand.

And I also agree, we'll have to sell the farm to move up and get a legit Qb in the draft.

My point was that he may not be able to reach those stats if he doesn't have time to throw the ball, the OL and RBs can't generate any kind of a run game and if Marshall has another so-so year and Hartline doesn't continue his growth and we don't find a TE...what is the guy expected to do...carry the other 10 players on offense... It's not just about whether he has that 3500/20/14 statistical year, it's about how the other areas of the team improve. And I'm referring mainly to the O. If the D doesn't at least match what they did last year, and even with those stats, we go 8-8 or less, Sparano is gone, maybe even Ireland and with a new regime, most likely will be a new QB...

So Henne loses either way...if Ireland/Sparano are kept and he does not generate the better stats, whether it be his doing or not, he's outta here. If a new regime comes in, unless his stats are that of the elite group of QBs, then he's gone as well...

EDIT: Ross has not figured out this business yet. All the star power in the world won't draw people to the games (so that he can make his money) unless he puts a better product on the field... He hasn't figured that out yet as evidenced by the Harbaugh fiasco, the Orton affair, etc...Until he figures out that he needs to get out of the star business and into the football business, this franchise is in even more trouble...

 

I honestly think that if Henne is a failure this year than this staff will go all out during free-agency to acquire a high caliber QB.. I don't feel like they will be willing to wait for X years or given that time to fix the ship.

 

Agreed, but what is a failure ?? Henne going 25/14 and 3800 yrds but us finishing 8-8 ?? Is that a failure on Henne's part ?? No, but it will be a failure on the part of the regime and likely would end their tenure here...

 

Sparano will be fired. Nolan may possibly take over. Finally, take a QB early...

Either way, Ross has to respect the work done by Nolan and Ireland. Ross has got to know his nationwide fanbase won't watch a team run by Daniel Snyder 2.0...

 

If he posts those stats Larry, he and this staff are not going anywhere imo..The team will be good.

 

No if henne goes 3800+ yards 18-20 touchdowns and 9 int than he stays as that shows mental improvements. If he goes 3200 yards 18 TD and 22 Int hes gone..

It's a tight rope for him. He has to PLAY smarter! He has the tools but I also dont feel hes a motivator out there. He doesn't impress me as a leader. He needs to be commander and give the offense the ability to believe he can do it.. Right now he kinda just seems to be worried about himself.

 

I'd buy that except those are the stats that Orton put up for three years going 9-7, 8-8, 3-13 and he's been expendable to both of those teams...

The thing is, even in the year that Penny took us to 11-5, that season could have gone either way...there were, what, 7 games that went down to the wire ??

But the point I was trying to make is IF Henne puts up stats like that and we DO end up 7-9, is that going to be good enough for fans to get on the Henne bandwagon and will it be enough to keep Ireland and Sparano here. And if it's not good enough to keep the current regime and they bring in someone else, with one good year in 4, is that going to be enough for the new regime to keep Henne on...the way I see it, he loses either way...

 

You are of the opinion that Henne is the main cause of the offensive woes...I am not...I think lack of talent, poor scheme, oddball play-calling and no running game are more the culprits than Henne's deficiencies. I know it's not fair, but it's a fact, the QB is getting the blame for all our problems on O and the other deficiencies in the offense are basically being overlooked...

 

Don't get me wrong on this. I think Henne has not produced. All I'm saying is that who or what is to blame for his failures ?? Is seems as tho the majority think that Henne is the culprit of all our teams' woes and we'd be in the playoffs if he were better. But there are other holes in this offense. The OL has been inconsistent at best for 3 yrs. The TEs haven't produced. Even with Marshall and Hartline's improvement, the WR corps is not feared by other D's since we lack elite speed. The play-calling has been erratic-to-dumb for several years. The WC, after it's grandstand entrance has been inept. The RBs have not produced at times either due to the OL or due to injury or due to just not getting the job done (like, for example RW wearing down at crunch time last season).

The organization, for not acquiring the right team around him, shares at least equally the blame. However, Henne will be the scapegoat before Parcells, Ireland or Sparano because of a QB rating...

 

With the new rookie wages, I would draft a top QB prospect if we have the opportunity to, regardless of how well Henne does.

 

I think this too. If Henne does poorly I could also see them looking into a free agent if the right one is available. If he does well the front office should still draft a QB in the first round (perhaps moving up), and I think they probably will.

 

If I'm in charge then I draft a QB in the first regardless of the outcome (assuming there's a QB there I think has franchise potential). Even if Henne takes us to the SB this year there will be questions about him. At a minimum there would be one year wonder questions. And I would want my highly drafted new QB to sit for at least a year anyways. After that year I would have the option of trading one of those guys for picks or simply holding on to both for a bit since the younger QB would be cheap for a couple more seasons. That's the great thing about this rookie salary cap. I have high hopes that it will make it easier for teams to let QBs develop.
