As a 10 year old boy, Mike sailed from Africa to India and remembered being mesmerised by the beautiful giant fish, the largest in the sea, for the whole journey. Nearly 40 years later these special memories inspired Mike to seek these beautiful creatures out again while working on another film in Gujarat. His search proved extremely upsetting when he found that anything between 1,200 and 1,500 animals were being mercilessly slaughtered every year during the six weeks of the monsoon when they come in to feast on the plankton. Whale sharks, like other large animals, are very slow in their reproductive cycle, so massacre on this scale has a devastating affect on their population.
