Didn't you use the fact that Benson has carried the ball just over 1300 times against him? Now you say get Portis who has almost 1000 more carries and will be 30 soon? lol

Love the Hurricane players but the last two years, he looks to avoid getting hit and when he does he gets hurt.

 

Umm did you vote in the poll? I mean, I know you were asked about Benson but you were pretty quick to say no and then went on to explain the type you'd like, and Portis fits the mold.

Since 2005? Listen, I've loved watching a former Cane run his entire career (which has been far far better than Benson) but since 2009 he's been hurt and if we combined 2009/10, he has not cracked 1000 yards. Benson has done it twice and carried a load. I want a young stud Rb like a Mark Ingram, or Leshoure to come in and help bring Miami's running game back but if they sign Benson as well, I won't have a problem with it. Portis? I'd love to get the old Portis but thats a big if.

 

If he comes cheap - let him come. If he doesn't produce, let him go. No harm - no foul.

 

Exactly, I do not mind veteran running backs, if anything I think the NFL writes them off to soon and I think Portis still has some tread on the tires ala Jamal Lewis circa 2007, but he was cut because he was set to make 8 million, he would not be worth a Ricky Williams type of contract for us, he'd be a vet minimum type around 2 million and I'd almost prefer Hilliard get some carries.

He and McGahee will basically be competing against each other for a job somewhere this offseason.

What exactly was inevitable about this thread? We’re about to let two aged running backs go. One and possibly both are physically unable to be more than complementary contributors in a rotating backfield. Who would then turn around and say “Hey, let’s get Clinton Portis, the one guy who’s hit the wall harder than Ronnie Brown”?

DeAngelo Williams and Ahmad Bradshaw are better and have been part of rotations for years, meaning less wear and tear and greater “life” expectancy. They’re worth roster spots; Clinton Portis is not.

Well Des, I watched Portis play some this past season and to me, he did not look done, he had nice short area quickness and ran with good power, but he would be a 1 yr stop gap type, and too expensive.

 

I see a guy who’s clearly degraded, offers little utility, and would suck up a roster spot better suited for someone more capable.

 

Disagree Des, not that he is a great fit for us, the NFL will simply retire him when he still has some tread left, that is how the league works.

 

I would love to have McGahee as part of a 1-2 punch, but so would Baltimore. I can't see why they would trade/release him, wouldnt mind if they gave Parmalee back to us though.

The backloaded section of McGahee’s contract is about to kick in; $6 million in 2011. The Ravens aren’t going to pay that for a goal line back. No one would.

As for Parmele… yawn. Besides informing the Ravens in 2008 of our offense in preparation for that playoff game, he’s done nothing in the NFL.

 

I think you maybe might have overlooked the "I watched him play" thing Des, and that is where I draw my conclusion from, not his birthdate or what have you, I'd heard all of the 'oh his explosion is gone" and watched for myself, he is not done imo, but the league itself will retire him simply because that is the consensus view of older running backs.

Which to me is a mistake, but that is how they do things.

 

Money, McGahee was slated to make 5 or 6 million and the Ravens do not like him at that price, to me if RW is worth 4.4 million to us he would be worth maybe 2/3rds of that to us, unless they really buy into Lexxy then we would save 3.5 million by letting RW walk and starting Lexxy, 3.5 milie is Shockey money.

 

I agree they wont like paying that price. I just think they'll swallow it. There are some mid-late round TEs I'd rather take a flyer on than go w/ an aging, broken down TE w/ an oversized ego like Shockey. If he wants to take the vet-min + incentives then OK, but 3.5 mil? No way...

 

See, now there I disagree, Shockey would be more effective for us than Portis could be, at least we know he can block, he knows how to get open as well, he is talking with Carolina but they are being cheap this offseason so it remains to be seen where he lands.

Yet another "young player who is learning the game" is the absolute last thing we need on offense, we want to answer questions not create even more of them.

 

I agree, we need some Vets. But Shockey? When was the last time he played anywhere near a full season healthy? 2nd, he doesnt even solve the problem we have at TE. Fasano is an excellent blocker, what we need is a faster, seam buster type TE and Shockey isnt it. 4 yrs ago he was, but not anymore. For 3.5 million we could get Brad Smith to play WR, KR and gunner. Or we could spend that $ as part of a contract offer (4-6 million) to Owen Daniels or Zach Miller. I'd prefer either of those options to paying 3.5 million for a 2nd string TE who'll maybe play 20 snaps per game.

The guy wearing the Portis jersey for the last couple of years isn’t really Clinton Portis, it’s his remote-controlled corpse.

if its all good, then see what can be negotiated.
you never know...
if healthy & reasonable, he's got another two or three years to run.

would go through the same process with Ronnie & Ricky,
keeping the best of total package of the three, then draft Ingram
or if not available, keep the two best veterans to run another year

no one could have been a major player running behind our offensive line

looks like a stable to me: Ingram, Ricky or Portis or Ronnie, Sheets & Cobb with Polite @ FB

fix the offensive line & good things will begin to happen

Shockey is a surer bet, this offseason that is what we need imho.

 

Maybe offer Ronnie B and McGahee around the same money and see who takes the deal.

I don't know that I'd call Sparano a loser in as much he just hasn't quite figured out (yet?) how to win consistently in the NFL. Moreover, IMHO he doesn't play to win in as much as he plays not to lose. But, that's neither here nor there really.

Back to my comments on Portis. I just think he is a low character guy. Between his comments in support of Vick when the whole dog fighting thing first broke, to his comments re; that female reporter who was harassed in NY, I just think he's a real douche. Add his injury issues of late (missed 19 games the last two seasons with concussion and groin injuries), his age (he'll be 30 on 9/1), and I just don't see any real value. I would much rather see this FO resign Ronnie Brown and draft another RB as opposed to signing Clinton Portis.

JMHO...
