    2 weeks to my buying a PS3 + MGS4 bundle.

Have they announced the midnight launch locations yet?

Got the official soundtrack. Just doesn't feel like a MGS soundtrack without that main theme (see Sviridov controversy). I wish they'd pay whatever the copyright fees are to the obscure dead Russian composer's heirs and put that theme back in the game.

Huh? Metal Gear Solid's main theme was composed by the Konami Japan sound team, primarily credited to TAPPY. Harry Gregson-Williams cleaned it up for MGS2 and then started moving away from it in MGS3.

Love Song is the official MGS4 theme. They intentionally moved away from the old one to signify that MGS4 is a more "mature" game from a storytelling and writing standpoint. (Think of MGS1-3 as Pulp Fiction, and MGS4 as Jackie Brown.)

Like I pointed to earlier, look up the Sviridov controversy. And you'll also find a youtube clip of Hideo being shown how the Russian composer Sviridov's work is very similar to Tappy's. This was shown prior to Portable Ops and it doesn't seem like a coincidence that the main theme was completely dropped after that. It wasn't moved away to signify "mature", it was moved away completely to avoid copyright issues.

Yes, it was indeed moved to signify a change in game theme. I'm not pulling that out of my rear end; I'm reporting to you what Kojima said when asked about the song's presence in the E3 2006 trailer.

As for "copyright issues," why, then, is the theme in the game? It's on the soundtrack. I'm listening to it right now. Disc 2, track 16, "Metal Gear Saga."

The MGS3 theme is in but not the MGS2 main theme. I'm listening to it right now too. Metal Gear Saga is a remixed version of newer MGS3 theme. It does not have the MGS2/MGS1 main theme, the one that is considered borderline infringement. Believe me, I want you to be right, but you aren't.

The MGS3 theme is just a redone version of the MGS2 theme. HGW composed them both, and made the MGS3 theme sound a little more retro for the 1960s setting. If Metal Gear Saga is the theme from MGS3, then it's the potentially copyright-infringing theme that Konami has yet to be sued over.

    Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Exactly, the MGS3 theme is not the MGS2 theme, it's a redone version that does not sound the same. That last little guitar piece at the end of the MGS3 main theme song (as well as the MGS2 main theme song) is what is potentially copyright-infringing and was removed from the Portable Ops trailer, Portable Ops soundtrack, and nowhere to be found on the MGS4 OST. It was even removed by Kojima's request from the Smash Bros game.

But again, if they were going to be sued for it, they would have been by now. It's been 11 years since the theme was composed.

I don't buy copyright infringement one bit, and apparently neither does the Russian.

Just because they haven't sued yet doesn't mean the threat's not there. If you're a businessman, you don't wait for them to sue you before stopping. All it takes is for the dead composer's heirs to get word of it and bring it to court. That alone will cost a bundle in legal fees whether they win or not. Look at the timing of the removal. Hideo's shown the comparison by a Russian magazine writer. Immediately afterwards, the MGS1 theme is removed from the Portable Ops trailer, the theme is nowhere to be found on MGS4, Hideo requests Nintendo remove it from Smash Bros.
