So, how long until David Ortiz retires and runs for Mayor of Boston?

Buster Olney is reporting that the Sox and Boras spoke a few times through the years on an extension but last offer Boras gave the Sox was for $130 million, no word on the # of years but whatever it was is an overpay.

Also Ken Rosenthal reported that Ellsbury is going for an MRI today on his hand which has been injuried since early September. I think either Buck or McCarver brought up the fact that Ellsbury seemed to be favoring his hand in Game 5 I believe on one of his swings he let his bottom hand go.

Absolutely. At this point in the season I don't think anyone is healthy but I definitely give major props to Pedroia, Victorino, Buchholz and Ellsbury for performing while clearly injured. Especially to Pedroia who got hurt in the first game of the year and Victorino who it seemed like every other day he was hurt.

So David Ortiz was drinking a giant bottle of champagne last night which costs between 100k to 150k, because of course he would. Seriously if you haven't seen the picture of the size of the bottle do a Google search (sorry I'm not able to copy/paste pictures at the moment).

Jon Heyman is reporting that the Red Sox plan to make QO for Ellsbury, Napoli and Drew. He said he doesn't know if they will make a QO for Saltalamacchia though.

Obviously Ellsbury and Napoli are no brainers but should be interesting to see what they do with Drew and Salty. Personally I'd give them both a QO as the worst that happens is you have from on 1 year deals, and even can trade them if the team finds a good trading partner (let's see would the Cards rather have Drew or Pete Kozma at SS?), and if they say no you get a pick for them.

Drew I am calling BS.....what can he provide that Middlebrooks/XB cant......unless they dont care about paying 14M for a back-up.....

Also that would be quite a jump for Naps BUT they have a need at first.....I can see it....

The demand for a good SS, which Drew is, is incredibly high. That's why they should give him a QO because he'll get a bunch of offers this off season.

I'd probably assume so. You'd have to think he'll get multiple offers elsewhere. Seriously can you honestly name 10 to 15 better all around SS in baseball? The supply/demand for that position is unreal. Ditto for catchers.

The best Red Sox beat reporter, Alex Speier of WEEI is reporting that as of right now the Sox are unlikely to make a qualifying offer to Saltalamacchia.

No go for Salty on the offer? Why? 14 for 1 year isnt that much...Salty didn't do well in the playoffs but he was very good in the regular season......

    Who is their other options?

    Naps got an offer...

From what I gather, the Sox don't want to drive up the price for catchers. They feel that Salty whether or not he accepts the offer, someone like Brian McCann, who they reportedly like a lot, would use that at a starting point in contract discussions.

Also the Sox have a very good defensive catcher that they feel is a half year away in Christian Vazquez so they might be willing to live with a Ross/Lavarnway/Butler combo for half a year.

Of course just because the Sox don't offer Salty a QO doesn't mean they can't resign him. But they obviously have their reasons. I'm starting to get the feeling the Sox would like to have a good defender behind the plate even if it means sacrificing some offense there.

I dont think McCann cares what Salty does or doesn't start at....he is going to make his own starting point....but 14-15 M it a good per year salary for him....Salty is overpaid at that price.....

watch how bad his numbers slip if he leaves Fenway....crap on a 1 year deal, come on down to YS Salty!!!

I'm hoping the Rays kick rocks on Salty honestly. Would fill a huge hole for Tampa.

Of course McCann or any player cares. It's all about leverage. If you're the best catcher on the market and the 2nd best catcher gets a 1 year offer for 14 million, then why wouldn't you at least ask for more money then that? His agents would simply say you're willing to give a lesser player 14 million then the starting point for my client would be more.

This stuff absolutely does matter. Which is why when the Yankees start to talk to Cano about his contract they're going to be pushing closer to what Pedroia signed for. And if Pedroia got 20 million a year, Cano's agents would be pushing for more then that.

With the state of catching as it is you'd have to think what around at least 15 teams would love to have a player like Saltalamacchia as their starting catcher.

Yeah, I'm probably going to guess he's out of TB's price range. I bet he gets maybe around 3/30 deal.

Id think so too. But you never know, Tampa could call and offer 3/24 and him happily accept. He is pretty bad against lefties, strikes out a ton, has only had one above average season and was god awful in the playoffs when it mattered, so it might curve his price tag a little. Who knows...doubt it, but it could.

I don't think the playoffs would have anything to do with it since it's a small sample size but there are GMs out there that hand out big contracts to guys that have huge Octobers so you never know. I do think because he has such a long swing he got exposed in the playoffs that guys with plus fastballs can beat him.

Thats fine and it may happen, followed by a hang up from Boras......same goes true for McCann's agent.....As an agent I would just say "Call me when you are realistic"

You know who I could see TB signing.....Carlos Ruiz....which wouldn't be a bad signing for a year....solid defensive backstop with some pop....

He doesn't have much pop at all. Just 2 seasons ago he had pop, other then that he never showed much. I would still be in favor of signing him. Hes still better then what we have.
