I don't see the Sox doing it for Shields....give up a draft pick (Sox don't like to do that), he is going to want big years and money (Sox don't like to do that) I could see them spending a little more and getting Lester back, because of the no pick... Also at this point for the next few year Lester=Shields pretty much...
Couple of things to consider: 1.) Sox draft #7 overall therefore their 1st round pick is protected, so if they were to sign a player tied to a draft pick they would lose their 2nd round pick 2.) Sox got a sandwich pick from the A's in the Lester/Gomes for Cepesedas trade so they can seemingly sign a player tied to a pick, lose their 2nd round pick but because of the sandwich pick still have a pick before the 2nd round. 3.) Sox need rotation help and I can't see how that would stop them from signing a top notch pitcher like a Scherzer or Shields for example. But obviously like you said Lester is more attractive because of the no pick ties.
Yankees signed Cashman for 3 years and fired Kevin Long: http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/sto...yankees-re-sign-brian-cashman-three-year-deal
wow, I wanted him......wonder who TB is going to get now....GM is vital to an organization like theirs....
Wow, huge news. Wonder if Friedman will continue to keep spending like the Dodgers have done in the past or if he will pump the brakes a bit and go more with the scouting/farm system he helped build up in TB, although Friedman and co stopped really producing talent in the minors once TB's MLB club got good and they started picking later in the draft, which he will do in LA now. Either way this effects all of baseball, especially TB. Also wonder if Joe Maddon will be the next one to head to LA.
Maddon already said hes staying in TB and is confident a contract extension will get done soon. Matt Silverman will take over baseball operations. Sucks losing Friedman, but the philosophy is in place. Like Ray said, drafts haven't been stellar lately. Who knows who that is really attributed to though.
Seriously, doesn't a Hanley signing just scream "Yankee offseason move"? The guy is over 30, used to be/kind of still is a superstar, can't really play defense, has had trouble staying healthy in recent years and will most likely get overpaid. With that being said if the Sox can sign him for 2 years or less and plug him in at 3rd I'd be interested but over 3 years is probably pushing it.
Sox are hiring Chili Davis as their new hitting job, who was with the A's since 2012. I like the hire. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/bo...sox-hire-chili-davis-to-become-hitting-coach/
That or they waited to long... I can picture Girardi stomping his feet wanting his buddy Bichette to get the job.
Sox offered him a 3 year deal and he was the former Triple A hitting coach for the Sox so there is familiarity with the FO and organization.
I don't know to be honest with you, I never really followed that. All I know is the Sox really liked him when he was the minor league hitting coach and he did a pretty good job in his years in Oakland and those guys seemed to like him as well. I think the fact that the Sox gave him a 3 year deal, which is rare for non-managers, probably speaks to that respect factor.
Welp, was wrong about that. Joe Maddon on his way out in Tampa. If Tampa hires Davey Johnson as his successor and is able to keep Hickey, we will be fine. If Hickey leaves with Joe....we are screwed...
Wow x2. Rays are already a bit more likable now that Uncle Joe is gone. In all seriousness this hurts TB as Maddon is obviously a good manager. You would think Maddon wouldn't just take any job so he'd be looking at a big market spot. I could see him sitting out for a year to wait for the right opportunity and join up with ESPN or MLB Network like what Francona did. But moral of the story is never trust what anyone says in sports. A week ago Maddon was never going to leave TB and now he wants a 5 year 25 million dollar deal to manage elsewhere. And I really hope he doesn't go to the Cubs, if they ever won the WS under him he would never shut up about it.
http://www.yardbarker.com/mlb/articles/red_sox_coaches_reportedly_hate_yoenis_cespedes/17574374 hate? Also so sad to hear about Oscar Taveras.....
No clue if that's true or not but should definitely be an interesting offseason for the Sox with regards to their OF. I think it's probably safe to say that the Sox handling of Jon Lester has been a big disaster at this point and even if the Sox end up resigning Lester it will be for more money and perhaps years then what they probably could have gotten him for during ST. And yeah the Taveras thing was awful, really a damn shame for that to happen to anyone, let alone a 22 year old with his whole life ahead of him. RIP to him and his girlfriend.
By the way happy 10 year anniversary to the Boston Red Sox for winning their first WS title since 1918 in 2004. Great memories. Obviously I'm biased but I truly believe those two ALCS against the Yankees in 2003 and 2004 will never be matched in terms of emotions and storylines. It couldn't have been scripted any better.
Depends. I don't think the Sox will simply dump him. If they can't get a package they like for him they will hang onto him and hope he has a monster year or they can possibly get a better package during the year if the Sox fall out of the race again.
Pretty good article on Schilling and his cancer scare this year: http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/11754095/curt-schilling-not-hiding-scars Say what you want about him, whether you like him as a person or whatever but no one should have to go through that, even if he brought it on himself as he says.
Also what if he packs it in? Rock-Nation will get his cash...... Yeah healthwise I wish no ill will against him because life is more important that sports, but as a guy I don't like him....
He'd be a fool to pack it in in a contract year, but I guess you never know but I'd be pretty surprised.
Dude if the whisper committee is true about the Coaches not liking him and he doesn't really like Boston, beating to his own drum......ehh I can see a disaster happening...I can see him being dealt quicker if he becomes a distraction in the clubhouse...
