I've loved 3 of Zach Snyder's films (Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen), but haven't had a chance to see Sucker Punch ... so I am willing to cut him a lot of slack. Could also be one of those things where they are setting up a potential sequel by casting a well known villain in a minor role ... looking at it as a cohesive series (I'd guess 3) could be smart. That said, Warner has messed up this property (it's freakin' SUPERMAN, fer chrissakes ...) so many times over the years it's hard to be optimistic. As long as pictures of a long haired Nick Cage wearing a purple body suit don't surface, I'm going to remain optimistic. Look at TDK: You've got Batman, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon, Two-Face, the Joker, and Rachel Dawes taking up screen time. And they even found time to tie the films together with the crime families. That's why I'm happy Nolan is involved in a producer role - while I don't want to see a "gritty" take on the Man of Steel, I do think his expertise in keeping an ensemble cast together and a weave a tight cohesive, but most importantly, compelling, storyline will prove invaluable.
True, good point about TDK. I guess it comes down to believing in Snyder; I liked his interpretation of the long graphic series Watchmen in film, but I really despised 300. To my mind, it could go either way.
IMO, it's a legitimate concern, but I wouldn't be too worried. If they're putting this much effort into assembling such a talented cast, it would be astounding if the plot were to completely suck.
maybe (hopefully) it will be a 2.5 to 3 hour movie to develop the plot a bit more. after reading everything, I'm still pretty psyched for this movie. as long as there's no Richard Pryor involved, I'm okay.
Faora reportedly cast: Antje Traue. I've never even heard of her, but she looks like she would make good Kryptonian villainess. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1662644/
Somewhat related. He doesnt look ripped enough to be Superman.
Superman should have a different kind of musculature. He needed this kind of musculature to be Theseus, but he has awhile before MOS starts filming.
I'm no fitness expert, so please comment. Here's Cavill's routine to be Superman. http://www.wharf.co.uk/2011/05/fitness-by-laura-williams-15.html
Jor-El reportedly cast: Russel Crowe. I'm not really excited about that casting choice. I just don't see him as Jor-El, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118038628
May have spoken too soon. Apparently, Faora may be played by Gal Gadot. Sorry that the only link is in Hebrew, but you can use Google Translator. http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-4076382,00.html
Looks to me are important and he doesn't look like Jor-El. For that matter, since Jor-El is Kal-El's father, he doesn't look at all like Henry Cavill. But, as I said I'm willing to wait and see. More news: Lara to be played by Connie Nielsen and Harry Lennix will have some unspecified role. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JakeLester/news/?a=39485&t=Connie_Nielsen_Offered_The_Role_Of_Lara_In_iMan_Of_Steeli
This isn't real (it looks to me like Henry Cavill and Amy Adams headshots pasted onto a still from Singer's Superman Returns), but it still got me a little jazzed.
The latest news has Julia Ormond as Lara. I prefer Connie Nielsen, but somehow, Julia Ormond seems to pair well with Russel Crowe. http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/167667-julia-ormond-up-for-man-of-steel
We now know what Harry Lennix's role will be: General Swanwick. It appears that it's a character that has been created for the movie, which makes me a bit uneasy. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/joshw24/news/?a=41295
Perry White reportedly cast: Lawrence Fishburne http://www.moviehole.net/201143758-did-ya-hear-theres-a-new-editor-over-at-the-daily-planet-laurence-fishburne Fishburne is a great actor and has the physical characteristics of Perry White, but I'm not sure about him, being African-American.
I can tell you right now... If you have an all star cast... if you have a character created for the movie that's not based on the comic book... If you cast a black American as Perry White for "political correctness"... Sadly the movie is already doomed to fail.
If you can define "fail", I may be willing to make a friendly wager (not money, but a something here on the boards like a sig or something)
So, you didn't like Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury either? and some of these all-star cast members are playing pretty small roles.
Our new Superman. http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/superman-revealed-first-photo-man-steel-165334772.html
I don't like it. At closer inspection, the fabric looks composed of some sort of scale mesh and with that hair he looks like Super Sha Na Na. http://www.comingsoon.net/nextraimages/manofsteelsupermanbig.jpg
I have to confess, my knowledge of "The Avengers" is miniscule compared to my exposure to Superman, so Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury didn't seem to bother me. Don't get me wrong...Lawrence Fishburne, AWESOME actor. I love his work. Can't think of a single role he's played that I haven't enjoyed his performance, except for "Red Heat"...but that's because he was an *** in that movie but I don't know about him as Perry White. Might just have to let go and unlearn what I've learned...like I had to do with Battlestar Galactica...and I really enjoyed that, so...we'll see.
I gotta agree with you about the costume. Not only what you said, the the "S" looks as if it was tacked on to the blue portion of the suit and not what's seen as traditional. Also, why are the colors a darker blue and a darker red? Batman is the "dark" costumed hero. The hair doesn't bother me. I don't know. I'm like you Miamian. I'm not thrilled with it.
Saw this posted yesterday. Should have known it was something big because my phone immediately started blowing up. If I was to quantify how I feel about it, I would say that I like it - mostly. What Works Costume Details - I really like the way that the cape folds look and tie into the neckline. It's a look straight out of the comics. I also like what little I can see of the belt and the nice wrist detail. Size of the S Shield - I always felt like the Superman Returns S was way too small. I get that Singer wanted you to be able to see it while in flight, but come on ... it was just too small. Sometimes, it's all about the size. Atmosphere of the Shot - It's not the typical hero pose. In that respect, it works. From the look on Cavill's face I get the impression that we're getting the badass version of Superman in this movie - not the moody pretty boy version from Returns (and don't get me wrong, Routh was clearly the best part of Returns and I loved him in the role). Cavill just gives that (I hate to say it) gritty vibe. Think about the two different promos we've gotten. One is a bank vault that it looks like has just been slammed shut. The other was a far off look with boy shorts. I'm just saying. I'm thinking this could be more like the early Superman of the 40s and 50s, not the moody version of the 80s and 90s. I even don't mind the colors in this conext. What Doesn't Work Suit Texture - Look, I get that we don't want to show Supes in blue Spandex, but I don't really get the texture on the suit. Is Peter Parker his tailor? Cheapness of the S Shield - So, after a slick redesign for Returns, we get what exactly? What looks to be a cutout version of the S Shield? Really? That's the best we can do? Surely someone somewhere can fix that before the movie comes out. As I said, I like it, mostly. I don't care about the hair - though John Travolta may be suing for copyright infringement - but otherwise it's a promising start. It's not perfect, and I'm far from blown away, but I"m a lot happier at this stage in the process (i.e. first promo) than when I got my first shot of Routh 5 (6?) years ago.
The impression I got was that Superman had somehow been thrown against the vault door and caved it in a bit, and is now getting back up to kick some ***. That poor kid; he was in the no-win scenario to beat all others. There was just the very narrowest window for him to follow up as beloved and legendary a star as Christopher Reeve, and he simply didn't have the chops to pull it off. Very little that went wrong with that movie had to do with him, though; he just shouldn't ever had been cast in that role. From the neck up he looked the part, but although he put on about 25 pounds of muscle for the role that long, lanky frame just didn't cut it. He wasn't helped by the supporting cast, either; what's-her-name is cute but as flavorless as Pablum in the role of Lois.
Also: it's possible that in that scene, the suit is wet, which would make it seem darker. The "texture" thing might just be the result of a low-res image.
A clearer view of the suit has now been revealed. I kind of threw up in my mouth when I saw it. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=81427 Ugh! Get rid of Snyder and do another reboot!
Lol. ****can a director based on nothing more than minor color variations? You're too attached and are clearly in need of an intervention.
Yes, the color is one thing. It should be blue. I can accept dark blue, but not purple. That and it has that texture that makes it look like tinfoil. Plus, no red trunks. I hate it!
It is dark blue, ftr. The red trunks always looked like Underoos. The texture looks like the same texture as Spiderman's. I'm fine with it, as long as Superman actually kicks someone *** through buildings in this one, instead of throwing a cellophane logo at the bad guy or turning back time by flying around the world or starring alongside Richard Pryor or fighting Nuclear Man or being portrayed as a fem, emo Jesus.
I hope you're right about the color. Maybe it's my screen, but that looks purple to me. The whole costume looked like a set of underoos in the Chris Reeve version, so that would have changed with this one i.e., darker colors. Why is the texture being the same as Spiderman a good thing anyway? As for the action, I agree 100%.
I'm okay with the costume. I don't really love it or hate it. There's some things I like and some things I don't. It looks to be similar in tone and style to what the Action Comic reboot (which is something I'm not okay with, but I digress), so in that respect it makes sense. I'm with Fin D ... as long as he's portrayed as awesome on the screen I'm generally okay with this. It's an improvement from Returns but that's about as far as I'm willing to go right now.
AWESOME! I have no problem with the suit. With the actor however...he just doesn't look right. In the comics, there was a black Nick Fury. I've never seen a black Perry White.
