Giles wants to stay, says club only a few pieces away.

This time, Giles' contract would make it harder for the Padres to get value in a trade. If Giles is traded, his salary for this season will go from $9 million to $11 million, and the club option for 2009 would also go from $9 million to $11 million. Giles' consent would be needed for a trade to the Red Sox, Brewers, Rays, Marlins, Tigers, Orioles, Nationals or Pirates. It would take $3 million to buy him out of the club option.

I am not sure if he is right that the Padres are only a few pieces away. Unless they get a better center fielder, Giles at 38 next year is going to put pressure on the outfield defensively. That is a lot of money that he will earn next year as well.

Look for San Diego to even listen to trade offers for Adrian Gonzalez our power hitting first basemen. I like both he and Peavy. The payroll is going to be slashed. It's at like 75 million now. The rumor is any where from 40-60 million next year. That is due to John Moores the owner still going through a divorce. The fans out here are not really happy about this.:wink2:

Bro but we can't get personnel right so we can go deep in the playoffs. I know you can have less payroll and still have a great team. The fans voted for the new stadium with the promise this club would be contending, and would bring good players in.:wink2:

The Padres are even going after a million dollars when he injured himself this year by stupidity. Kenny, our farm system is no where as good as yours in Arizona. That is why it is so important for us to hit on players.

Peavy is available eh? Hmmmm, I might just entertain a trade just to keep him from playing against L.A. ever again. He kills us.

L.A. has Billingsley and Kershaw. Two very young talented pitchers who will be the front end of their rotation for a decade if they stay healthy.

I also think that they may go after C.C. Sabathia in the offseason so trading away talented minor leaguers (and you know San Diego would demand a king's ransom) is probably out of the question.

What is San Diego looking for in return? Pitching help? Positional players?

You do have a great new stadium. You have a handfull of very good young players. Hopefully the FO will make some good moves and bring in some more good-young talent.

Seriously, I have always hoped nothing but good things for the Padres Bro. Even when they come in and whoop the D-backs, not a big deal.....same cant be said about the Giants

I gotta say I LOVE Joe Garogiola (Sp?) Junior. He has taken some good advise from his father and REALLY produced this farm system.

OF COURSE it is VERY unfortunate for us that the Sidewinders (Triple A) is moving from Tucson to Reno this off-season. Quite honestly, the girls hate it as well. They LOVED going to the Sidewinders games.

Growing up near Albuquerque, I had the same type of atmosphere with the Dukes. I saw SOOOOO many big name players before they made it with the Dodgers.
    Davey Lopes
    Steve Yeager
    Mike Soscia
    Rick Sutcliffe
    Mike Piazza
    Steve Sax
    Eric Karros
    Rick Rhoden..

    etc etc etc.
Saw them ALL with the Dukes, and it was a great atmosphere meeting the players in a small park.

Guess I should be a Dodgers fan, but...Nope hope they lose out the rest of the way at this point. :hi5:

Peavy made available for a trade.

PADRES: Padres make Peavy available for trade : North County Times - Californian

The Padres' willingness to listen to offers for a player under contract through at least 2012 reveals a shift in the organization's direction caused by a 63-99 showing in 2008. When Peavy's extension was finalized last winter, the Padres had strung together four straight winning seasons with playoff appearances in 2005 and '06.

Organization feeling out trade offers for Padres staff ace Peavy

Among the cities Axelrod mentioned were Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and St. Louis.
Peavy and his wife Katie have three boys, one an infant, and this year moved into a home north of San Diego. Because of Peavy's intention to keep his family in San Diego for at least part of the year, Axelrod acknowledged that the Anaheim Angels are one AL club that would draw extra consideration.

They haven't even got a deal done for Bell yet there 8th inning set up man. The fans are really not happy with the direction of the club right now, and questions the recent bad moves that they made. A lot of the fans of fed up with "we are going to put a winning team on the field"crap. Now John Moores may have to sell some of the team off due to his divorce. It is not looking good for us right now.

Organization focuses on pitching in trade talks for Padres ace

“I would say our preference is pitching,” Towers said. “Probably next, it would be middle of the infield. Pitching more than anything. If we moved Jake, we'd look for controllable pitchers, preferably starters in a significant enough package to where some are major league ready and some are close to being major league ready.

Towers has heard from AL clubs interested in Peavy, but the GM said he is focusing only on NL clubs. “Until Barry or Jake decides to be open-minded about going to one of those (AL) clubs, we're not going to do it,” Towers said of pursuing a trade with an AL team.

Ehh..the times I've seen him, he has been "okay" certainly not the Hoffman from 5 years ago, but he still can get it done.

He may need a change of scenery though, it happens.

Ownership is such a mess at the moment though, and our young guys just did not perform well, except for Gonzalez, guys like K Greene just did not perform at all.

And Towers...sheesh..."middle infielders" is he crazy?

Hoffman is a fan favorite, but it wouldn't hurt me if he moved on. Khalil Greene maybe on the trade block as well. I am not sold at all on Sandy Alderson as our CEO. He could be let go, and I think we would be better for it. I think he stinks. He won't let Towers go to another team, and yet he won't let Towers make trades to try and better the club either.

It kills me that Towers mentioned middle infielders as part of any J Peavy trade, the average middle infielder is a dime a dozen, unless they can hit 30 Hr's there is no reason to trade for them.

Towers is sort of caught, he promised a winner, the Padres tanked, now his hands are tied in the way of trades and free agents.

We need either some pop in the lineup, or some speed, right now we are more of a singles and double hitters with a one base at a time approach.

Contract may force organization to deal away staff ace Peavy

Contract may force the Padres to trade Jake in weeks rather then months. I have met Jake in spring training and got his autograph. All I can say is that who ever gets him, is getting one heck of a pitcher, and an outstanding person.

The article in today's union tribune gives the odds for teams to get him. This didn't come out in the link on the internet article. If you want to know what was said for each team and players possibly mentioned in a trade let me know.

    Altanta Barves-2-1
    St. Louis Cardinals 4-1
    Houston Astros 6-1
    Chicago Cubs 8-1
    San Diego Padres 10-1
    New York Mets 12-1
    Los Angeles Dodgers 15-1
    Milwaukee Brewers 25-1
    New York Yankees 100,000,000-1

Well, we DO have too many starters in the field right now.

With the trade aq for Adam Dunn, we have outfielders of

    Dunn,
    Justin Upton
    Chris Young
    Eric Byrnes
And Connor Jackson proved to be a VERY solid LF

We also have a log-jam at 1st base depending on who plays where. We also have one of the absolute best farm-systems in the bigs....and our Payroll was just under 52,000 last year.

Not probable, but it is possible Peavy comes to the desert.
