Maddux's situation also presents a quandary, because the right-hander has to approve any trade. The right-hander loves pitching in San Diego, calling it the "greatest city in the league" after the Padres' loss on Wednesday.

Sources in Phoenix said the Diamondbacks have inquired about trading for Padres first baseman/pinch-hitter Tony Clark. And, to a lesser degree, are interested in right fielder Brian Giles.
The source said the Diamondbacks are desperate for the clubhouse leadership Clark would provide, and could also use a left-handed hitting outfielder.
Padres general manager Kevin Towers wouldn't comment specifically on the rumor, but said he's exploring everything that would strengthen his club.

Braves beat writer Mark Bowman talked to Greg Maddux, who as you know has a full no-trade clause. When asked where he could see himself playing in August and September, Maddux named the Braves and Dodgers. He said he'd likely approve a trade to Atlanta.
Neither team may be interested, however. Bowman says the Braves are looking for offense and prefer to develop their young pitchers. And Maddux himself doesn't think the Dodgers need pitching (after all, they've got Clayton Kershaw in the minors).
We learned on Friday that Padres GM Kevin Towers has informed Maddux of which teams are interested, and Maddux will take the break to consider his options. Would he be up for Philadelphia or St. Louis? Are those teams interested?

The Padres will get Single-A pitcher Evan Scribner, who is 0-1 with a 1.86 ERA in the Cal League. A right-hander who will turn 23 on Saturday, Scribner entered the season with a 2.85 ERA in 47 1/3 innings and a strikeout/walk ratio of 61/14.
The Padres maybe throwing in the season if they continue to trade within the division.

The pickings for what the Padres have to offer appear fairly slim, but Towers has put out feelers on pitchers such as Randy Wolf and Greg Maddux and pinch-hitter Tony Clark, whose potential suitors include the Diamondbacks and Dodgers.
Also on the horizon are advanced minor leaguers such as Triple-A outfielder Will Venable, a 25-year-old former Princeton basketball star; Double-A outfielder Chad Huffman, described by Towers as the best player on his club; and Huffman's teammate Steven Garrison, a left-handed pitcher who Towers said should become a major-league starter.

There is a lot of heat going on here locally.
Asked if the team's miserable first half caused the front office to alter its evaluation methods, the CEO said those methods were "not much different" from those that worked in previous years. He added: "We definitely missed in our evaluation of some players this season. And, because we have not had great depth, it has been difficult to address either really poor performance or significant injuries in key areas. This would be true for any team facing these problems -- and there are several this year, including most of the NL West -- which is why a good farm system is so important."

Brother not bringing Bradley's bat back in this lineup, not bringing Cameron back, other bad personnel moves, and a rash of injuries have made it very hard to watch them play. I really wanted them to bring Bradley back. He brought a fire to the team, and pumped up the rest of the players.

Dealing Greene and Giles would make sense, I doubt we can afford Greene long term, and Giles is expensive and no spring chicken.

Bro from what I have heard, the Cubbies inquired about Greene as well. Giles is due to make 9 million next year. He has a 3 million buy out. I have heard the Padres want him as part of the re-building process. I hope not. He is a good hitter, but will be 38 next year.

This time, Giles' contract would make it harder for the Padres to get value in a trade. If Giles is traded, his salary for this season will go from $9 million to $11 million, and the club option for 2009 would also go from $9 million to $11 million. Giles' consent would be needed for a trade to the Red Sox, Brewers, Rays, Marlins, Tigers, Orioles, Nationals or Pirates. It would take $3 million to buy him out of the club option.
I am not sure if he is right that the Padres are only a few pieces away. Unless they get a better center fielder, Giles at 38 next year is going to put pressure on the outfield defensively. That is a lot of money that he will earn next year as well.
