I'm one who believes that teams like Utah and Boise State need to play major competition week-in and week-out in order to be taken seriously. But here they are, essentially taking all comers and getting snubbed. This was the part of the article that resonated most; with me, at least: It may never happen and if it does it will doubtlessly take years...but does anyone believe that reason will prevail and we will see a REAL playoff system in Division I?
Why would anyone want? Its a lose lose for a top program. They lose and now they are 1 loss from being done in national title picture and if they win congrats now go play a tough conference schedule.
Why would Miami and Florida schedule eachother? It's the same concept. I don't see why this is any different. They don't use magic, they play football. Putting them on your schedule is no different than putting any other tough OOC team on your schedule.
I can remember a day when the only reason you wouldn't find the big three from Florida in the top 5, was because they played each other....same goes for an all Florida NC game.
If you read deeper into it, it's because the only date Boise is offering is the FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON. The game before everyone gels, the game where a lot of upsets occur. They are pretty much trying to steal a game early on. I bet if they made the same offers week three, they would get some games.
Boise st. has been a constant force with consistent 10+ win seasons, how on earth does that take away from a teams SOS?
So you're saying people who make scheduling decisions aren't confident that their teams are good enough to be ready for week 1? Sure doesn't sound like those teams are better than Boise St necessarily then. I mean, Boise State shouldn't be gelled yet in week 1 either by that argument, and they are the ones willing to travel. And you mean like in week 3 in 2008 when BSU beat #17 Oregon at Oregon? Is week 2 too early, and that's how they beat Oregon State in 2006? Oklahoma must not have been gelled as a team when they lost to Boise State in one of the best bowl games ever in 2006. Guess they should've waited longer to play. I mean they sure managed to steal a game when they went to Georgia in 2004 and lost by close to 30. Either your team is ready or they aren't. Boise St is confident in their abilities. Perhaps some other programs should be too.
Boise State can sell out all offseason for one game knowing they dont play ANYONE the rest of the year. Other teams can't. If they want the game that bad they can schedule it another week. They obviously dont.
Of course they can sell out all OFFseason while no other team can, as if all teams don't have restrictions on how much and what they can and can't do in the offseason.
It doesn't surprise me one bit. Just look at Florida's NCS for example: Charleston Southern, Troy, FIU. Alabama has a joke NCS. Texas' NCS just as bad, possibly worse. They, just like all of the other big boys, will hide behind the "look how tough our conference schedule is" excuse...
Florida also plays Florida State who is usaully a power house. Most teams play a schedule like that for the money from home games.
...and don't forget the BCS was created by the "major" conferences for this very reason. Keep the riff-raff out of the championship and the associated money that goes with being a part of it. I personally think the BCS sucks and I want a playoff, sadly I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime-there's too much money involved.
