Yeah we've got our soccer thread but this is the greatest tournament in all of sport so it needs its own thread. I can't ****ing WAIT! It sucks that the US has its best team, possibly ever, and we get the toughest draw of any team. Winning even just one game will be a success. I'm really excited to see how England does as well. Hell of a roster but perennial let downs in this tournament. Also wanna see what Ronaldo does in what might be his last World Cup while in his prime.

Discuss all fixtures, rosters, and happenings in the 2014 World Cup. Just one month away! [strike]

You guys (USA) are in a compicated group, Germany is always a candidate to win the cup, portugal with CR is almost sure they go to the second round. I think USa will defeat Ghana and will have to get a drawn and a victory in the other 2 games, which is not going to be easy but lets see. Games have to be played.

The US is in a tough group no doubt, but they are not dead in the water. They have a decent chance of surprising some people.
IMO the first game against Ghana is the barometer game. They simply must win that game, and win with a nice goal difference.

After that, they just need to look for a point out of the next 2 games and try to keep a positive goal difference.

They have a good shot vs Portugal who are a flawed and overrated team. Ronaldo is an extremely talented scorer but he is not a team player. He does not raise the level of his team mates. If US can frustrate Ronaldo and make his shots difficult, Portugal can be played.

Vs Germany is another story. That's an extremely talented team and my pick to play the final. Though if US can get 3 points from Ghana and steal a point from Portugal, then they can go vs Germany with less pressure and maybe they can manage something from them.

Call me crazy, but I'm calling Germany wins the group, USA second place. Portugal Eliminated.

I agree, Ronaldo is not a teammate player and doesn't make his team mates better and that's why they wont win the world cup but they can defeat any team from the concacaf. If USA wants to win this game, they need to score at least 2 times and neutralize Ronaldo during 91 of the 90 minutes of the game because this guy can make plays and goals out of nothing.

I want to put Mexico through. World cup won't be the same if Mexico gets knocked out in group stages, specially a WC in America. However I am not liking Mexico this WC. Their squad is IMO the weakest it has been for some years and they are severely lacking in leadership and grit.

I think Croatia are in a great moment talentwise and have some very good players going through some stellar seasons. Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic are very talented midfielders and just had wonderful seasons for Real Madrid and Sevilla respectively. They'll also have Mandzukic up front.

Mexico, just like the US, need to get a good result in their first game vs Cameroon, because both Brazil and Croatia are going to be very tough.

I might have to amend picking Chile to come out second in group B ahead of Netherlands. Arturo Vidal just had meniscus surgery on his knee and might or might not miss the WC. That's a huge blow to Chile if he were to miss the WC.

I agree with all of this. Germany is so multi-layered and talented. We played a friendly with them last summer and I think they had 8 premiere league players to our one.

Agree about CR7. Best player there is but if we prevent him from finding net, that's a game you can win.

Agree once again on the Ghana game. You lose or draw that game and your tournament is over.

Modric really is playing out of his mind right now but you have to wonder how much different his game will be without Robaldo, Benzema and Bale (sprinkled in with Di Maria) up front.

That's a good point, though Croatia does have Rakitic and Mandzukic. Rakitic specially is extremely underrated and just had an awesome season for Sevilla.
I think Croatia will be tough to beat by a Mexico side who has not inspired confidence this year. Mexico also has a history of struggling vs African sides in tournaments. Cameroon is not the Cameroon of other years, but African teams give Mexico trouble.

You are right, Mexico struggles vs any team with african physical characteristics. Either african teams or caribbean like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, etc. I think the toughest game for Mexico, besides the one vs Brasil, is the game vs Cameroon bacause of their strenght and speed. Mexico does not have the players to counter that and their defenders are extremely slow.

Tell you if England somehow advances out of their tough group, I actually like their chances to get to at least the Semis. I don't think PK's will defeat the three lions this year. Not with the squad they have. It's almost like Hodgson is taking some of these guys specifically for the PK's.

Curious as hell to see how Belgium does.

I think all European teams will struggle. Not only have Europeans never won in America, but Brazil's weather is going to wreak havoc on European players.
It'll be winter in South America, but tropics never really get winter, just less harsh summer. England themselves have to play a most likely decisive match against Italy in the middle of the Amazon. Manaus averages over 80 degrees and over 70% humidity even in "winter".

That was a huge shocker. Never saw that coming. I think Donovan is not in the best of forms right now and he is already 32 years old, but still, I have to think you bring him merely for the veteran presence and leadership.

Not really sure how this affects the team's prospects in the WC, I gotta trust Klinsmann knows what he's doing though, so we'll see.

    Definitely a shocker though.

I just think I'd trust a veteran with World Cup experience late in the game. His fitness may be down, but he couldn't come off the bench in a close game with 20-30 minutes left and make an impact?

If the US doesn't get out of the group, people are going to come back to this. And if they do, which means finishing on top of either Portugal or Germany (I highly doubt they'd actually finish 1st. ITs 2nd or bust) people will forget about it. They wouldn't even have to beat likely opponent Belgium.

If Klinsmaan coached the women's team Wambach would be a goner next year.

I don't think it would be fair to blame the exclusion of Donovan from the roster as the fact should the US not make it out of their group. They already have a tough road ahead, with or without Donovan, and I don't think he is in a position right now in his career to be a huge tipping point one way or the other.

However this just rubs people the wrong way. He should have gone by virtue of who he is and what he means for US Soccer alone. There are players at the end of the roster who most likely won't see many minutes in the WC, if at all. Donovan should have gone. But again, I'll trust Klinsmann knows what he is doing.

I have heard some peopple from the mexican media that it could be a retaliation of Klinsmman regarding Donovan's refusal to play for the US national team in 2011/2012. Other "journalists" are saying that Klinsmann decide to take the german player Julian Green who has american origins. You know the media loves to be suspicious and bitterly

LD being out sucks. Grizzled vet who gets people excited for the support. Personally I question whether there were 23 better members of the team than him.

That said We for a nasty draw, and I don't know if LD would make a difference. I'm excited about Greene, and the US team has my full support. If we now out early I wonder if the German gets another shot, but I personally hope he does. With our draw I have a hard time faulting him for bringing in you exciting guys to get experience for 2018z

Well talk about a response... In his first match since not making the team, Donovan scores two goals for LA to become MLS' all-time scoring leader, while also setting up an assist. I guess he does have desire. While the Galaxy fans held a tifo saying "If we have 23 players better than Donovan we have a chance to win the World Cup." Well that's not happening, but its amusing.

Russia beat Slovakia today, that was good to see. Sluggish match, but our defense showed up. I am cautiously - optimistic, I see them getting out their group, but they will face either Germany or Portugal after group plate. They played Portugal fairly well in qualifications, split their series, but Germany..I doubt they'd get past them. So rooting for Portugal to get out lol

It sounds like Julian Green might actually crack the starting 11 and I'd much rather have him in there in Donovan's spot, honestly.

    Other news:

Sounds like Diego Costa won't be able to go for the Spanards. They're saying they're going to evaluate him in 15 days but a torn hamstring for a soccer player is the same thing as arm issues for a pitcher in baseball.

Any one heard anything on Luis Suarez? That'd be quite a blow for Uraguay.

Both Diego Costa and Jesus Navas are big question marks for Spain. Del Bosque just called up youngster Deulofeu for their next friendly as a tryout just in case Navas cannot make it, though replacing Diego Costa is going to be very difficult.

I think Luis Suarez will be ready just in time for the team training a week before the cup.

They have no shot to advance out of that group. But it will be a good experience for the young players. Watched the Turkey match. Defense is really struggling. Offense is ok. But i dont see them outscoring Germany or Portugal. Donovan gave them another attacking option next to Dempsey and Altidore.

Now the way England played vs Peru. Would say they dont have much of a chance either, sadly.

There's no reason this USA team can't beat Portugal. My prediction is a tie

Ronaldo isn't healthy, and the Portugese team isn't that good to begin with. Probably one of the weakest teams they've had since the 90s. They're historical underachievers and outside of Europe I could see them busting out of this tournament.

The defense was suspect against Turkey, but USA still controlled the game. I'm not sure Portugal would've fared much better against Turkey.

I could see USA grabbing 4 points in the opening round giving them an opportunity to get out of the group.

I'm already on the record in the first page saying Portugal isn't making it out of this group. They are a really suspect team and are only in the WC because Ronaldo is a really good scorer.

I think this USA team is really underrated, Ghana is no gimme and we all know about Germany. I thought Portugal wasn't going to make it out of their group, and now with Ronaldo being hurt and a question mark to even play at all, I've even more conviction in my prediction.

My full prediction for the group:

Germany beats all - 9 points
USA beats Ghana and ties Portugal - 4 points
Ghana beats Portugal - 3 points
Portugal ties USA - 1 point.

I see no reason to change my predictions really... I'm not overly enthused about England's chances but I think they can beat Uruguay if Suarez isn't 100% especially. I'm going to adopt Belgium as my third favorite team behind England and the US... and the Argentina (i know i know) 4th favorite team... F Brasil and Germany... I posted this back on Dec. 7th shortly after the group were announced:

They're obviously not going to win it, not even come close but I'm eager to see what Japan manage to achieve. Each year they get better. They have a nice aggressive style and of course, as underdogs, it's fun to get behind them. Their path isn't easy but that might mean some solid opportunities for upsets.

Other things I'll be watching for:

An African team to get past the quarter-finals. Not easy but I'll be excited to see it happen.
Messi to finally show up on the World Cup stage - although I'd rather not see Argentina win it!

I think klinsman messed with the chemistry a bit too much and too close to the start of this tournament. I will be rooting like hell but I think he went for speed over experience and the chemistry will suffer unless they find it quickly. I think he eveluated this team and figured he could only go so far with the vets. He's willing to risk an 0-3 round to be more competitive in the knockout stages not sure if that risk pays off

I am so glad that this thread was started! I was on some US Soccer forums and oh my god are they pessimistic. They are idiots who have zero faith in any decision that happens. With that being said...

I honestly feel that the US will reach the quarter finals again just like 2002. We will beat Ghana. They are a good team, but they are an aging team and the way we played offensively vs Nigeria with the counter attacks makes me confident.

The Portugal game will be tough, and Ronaldo has 8 goals I think in the qualifying round, but that is in 4 out of 10 games he played, and half of those goals were in 2 games vs Sweden. It was a Ronaldo vs Ibra duel, so two one man teams playing there. So odds are we can contain him, and if we do we can get the W.

That leaves Germany which will be the toughest of the three, but I think Klinsmann will be ready. They struggled on the counter attacks that Cameroon hit them with a week ago and tied 2-2 there. I think we aim for a tie by playing back, but try and make the most out of opportunities in counter attacks.

Jozy has is confidence back, Bradley played amazing vs Nigeria, the back line is looking better, Bedoya has stepped up at midfield, and this team believes! Sure Klinsmann said we can't win, but ESPN interviewed Tim Howard after that and he said that it was Klinsmann's way to challenge them to step up to the occasion.

Watch out Brazil! The Yanks are coming!

I'll say this, after seeing the US vs Nigeria, I'm not as down on their chances this month. The US is most dangerous when Beasley and Fabian Johnson can get forward from their back four alignment. It might not be a bad thing to see them play a 5-3-1-1 to get Beasley/Johnson forward more effectively against the likes of Portugal and Germany. I don't believe Klinsmann has employed that lineup at the start of any of their games and it might catch the two Euro powerhouses by surprise. You could basically have Bradley as the middle man in the 3 manned midfield (with Jones and Beckerman tucking in behind him. Then you have Dempsey in behind Altidore. If they can hold and stagger their attacks with Beasley and Johnson overlapping from the back, that's a pretty good counter attacking side. Because you're not really playing a 5-3-1-1.. but a 3-5-1-1.

While parking the bus with a 5-3-1-1 seems good, I doubt we start a game like that. We need to attack as well. I hope we go 4-2-1-2-1 With Besler, Cameron, Johnson, and Beasley as the back four. Beckerman and Jones at DM. Bradley in front of them at the middle of the field, Bedoya and Dempsey ahead of that, and Altidore at head striker

Brazil over Spain (3rd), Germany over Belgium (Final). Tempted to pick Netherlands over Spain in that group though with Spain pulling an Italy 2010 to go out in the group stage...but they still seem too good to lay an egg.
