They must not have a lot of confidence in Henne if they are willing to give Thigpen a shot to start unless this is just coachspeak.

All three of our guys (white, henne and Thigpen) are young. Theres no reason to think one of them is heads and toes better than the others. This is very simple coaching logic.
"You think you're better? Prove it."
I'd imagine Whites being told some of the same. Though White has a slight advantage knowing he'll be used on the field sooner.padre31, Clipse, dolfan7171 and 1 other person like this. -
if henne does not finish the season as the starter he needs to be waived as he is just eating up a roster spot.
-
Also a consideration, Drew Brees sucked until Philip Rivers was drafted. Competition is good.
Management just needs to be slow to pull the trigger, avoid the QB dance that's happening in Cleveland.RevRick, Frumundah Finnatic and GISH like this. -

This just means if Henne struggles he will get pulled. Lets hope it doesn't happen.

I think it's Henne's job to lose this year, but come offseason, it's going to be a battle. I hope we all understand that.

I think this is coach speak, just so Henne doesn't get comfortable. I think this is a situation that they saw developing in Oakland but Oakland did it wrong and ended up releasing Jeff Garcia so now Russell is comfortable but also knows that he doesn't have anyone looking over his shoulder; they don't want the same thing to happen here. Henne's going to get his thirteen games IMO because they have to see what they have in him but if he starts struggling a bit, which is expected, and he doesn't make any weekly progress then he knows that Thigpen is sitting there waiting to take his job.
-
Also, why wouldn't you want every QB on your roster to try to win the starting job?DOLPHAN1, RevRick, Pandarilla and 2 others like this. -
If that makes sense, ala Trent Dilfer with Baltimore. -

He has to show he can make the smart throws, under pressure, and win the clutch game. That goes along with what you're saying. It's about his performance. Part of that is winning the game when the opportunity arises.steveincolorado likes this. -

Competition is fine, but I also hope they let Henne know that the job is his to lose. That this is HIS team now.....
I think he deserves it....I think he's earned it. Hell he beat out McCown and Beck in camp his rookie year only to watch Penny fall into our laps and take the job.
I'd make sure he knew that this is a different situation and that Thigpen is here mostly for insurance.
Personally I don't think Thigpen has near the talent Henne does....but he'll make a serviceable back up.Pandarilla likes this. -

Should Henne be annointed the next starting QB or should he know he still has to earn it. I know the Dolphins don't need a QB controversy but Henne must know that his performance must be the deciding factor as to whether he remains the starter. The only way to remind Henne of this is to have competition from someone who has the experience and abilities to compete with Henne.
-
My guess: If after 9 or 10 games Henne sucks it up bigtime then Thigpen will get the nod.
-
That is unless Thigpen plays amazing in those final games and Pat White progresses into a real QB. Maybe we're only 90% dependant on Henne.
Of course, there's always a chance that we could trade for Kevin Kolb or Donovan McNabb in the offseason. Maybe we're only 80% dependant on Henne.
hmm... we could end up drafting Bradford or McCoy. Maybe we're only 70% dependant on Henne.
**** it, let's just let the kid play.SeanP, Frumundah Finnatic, SargeZ33 and 1 other person like this. -

This isn't about the offseason competition...this was an article from last season when we acquired Thiggy...has nothing to do with what is going on today...or this offseason...look at the dates...

What's with people always bumping old threads? I was halfway through and really confused until I realized this was last year.

Well, how refreshing is this idea after Wanny refused to bring in Competition for Fedler because "it would ruin his confidence"?
Keep in mind folks, Sparano compared Thiggy to Romo, Sparano rarely compares a current player to an ex player he coached, as in he compared Cam Wake to Demarcus Ware..and that was it..once before..that's it.
If anyone is in trouble in the Qb derby, it is Pennington, if he cannot throw he won't make the roster at 2.5 million dollars. -

Nonetheless, I say huzzah for Thigpen.
HUZZAH! -
Every team needs a good backup. We never would have had a perfect season if we didn't have a good backup for Bob Griese when he broke his leg. I hope Henne starts and will be our franchise QB, but it's also good to have a good #2 and #3.

I'd appreciate open competition every year, at every position. I honestly don't think Thiggy has a shot at beating out Henne. But if Henne is struggling in training camp and preseason, by all means I'd rather have whoever is performing best in there under center......even if it is Pat White.

Thigpen wants to start?
Cute  -
Hurry and learn the playbook????
Shouldn't he know the playbook by now????
