And I need some help/opinions about rings.

I have the type of ring in mind (both diamond cut and ring color), but I was just wondering if anyone knows where I should start looking.

Obviously some place that has diamond certifications is a must, but I didn't know if people suggest chain jewelery stores, or local shops. Like where will the best deals be?

Any help or tips would be much appreciated.

I went to about every chain store possible, and a few local, before finally deciding on one from Zales. I suggest you look around to find the right ring at the right price for you. Congrats btw.

I had mine made at a local jewelry store. But, that was a long time ago when you didn't have to worry so much about there being fake stones. If I was doing it today I think that I would go with a name brand store just to be safer.

Congrats and I hope that everything works out great for you both!

read up on the four 'C's of diamonds. I think they are color, cut, carat, clarity or something like that (my in laws own a jewelry store). Learn about them and be sure to ask about the diamond you are buying. Obviously you can get a larger diamond with low grades for the same price as a smaller diamond with higher grades, you just have to find a happy medium. from what I've seen most of the chains will peddle larger, lower quality diamonds which is what most women are into. They just want to say I've got a 1.5 carat diamond. other things to look at are stye of cut, like princess cut, round, brilliant round, etc.

I got my wifes at a local jewler that has been in business forever. I get all my wifes jewlery there, if anything breaks he fixes it for free or replaces it for free. You can bring it in anytime for a cleaning, usually only a local place will do stuff like that.

Yeah, the jewler I used asked me what I wanted to spend then he had different diamonds brought in. Showed me the difference in each one, showed me the biggest and what was wrong with it and so on.

You can get that kind of lifetime warranty at a chain as well, for not much. Plus cleanings and checkups are always free at Zales as well.

In all seriousness, The Jewelery Exchange has some good bargains and you can choose a design to be made from scratch. Ask her what she likes but do it in a round-about way.

Don't choose the parking lot of McDonald's for chris'sake !

Women like those ooky romantic places, like in front of fireplace (but this is summer) or in a secluded booth in a restaurant. I say this is a very personal thing (at least for me) and I would not do it with a whole lot of people around, especially no family. So don't do it at a family Sunday dinner.

Diamond district in NYC, pick the rough diamond and watch them cut it, adds the personal touch to it all.

    But it costs $$$$$$$

    But I did it! :)

Heres a little "Nugget" I will throw your way Mr Peter Stitches.

When I proposed, I had a ring, but I knew going into it, it WOULDNT be the ring she would want.

If you want, you can take her ring shopping prior, but here is what I did (The proposal was a complete surprise).

First criteria going in was, Would I be able to exchange this ring for the one she really wanted in a week or so (Upgrade is genarally what it is called)

I did indeed scavange an existing ring I KNEW fit her and made sure I got the right size. Aside from that, I didnt really care that much what the initial ring looked like..within reason of course.

After Mrs AZFINFANMANG said yes (Like there was ever any doubt) we collectively went in and picked out the ring that would be hers...We have since upgraded one more time.
The moral, check into upgrading and what the store policies are.

We chose Helzberg and have been very very happy since. They do free annual inspections and cleaning whenever we want...

just my 2cents worth....and of course very warm CONGRATS to you Mr Peter Stitches

pete, the only thing i can do as far as advice is to make damn sure you are certain that she is "the one." There is no law that says you can't date for a long time prior.

not that it's my business, but how long have you guys been dating? are both your lives in order (career wise & finance wise?) I speak from experience on this

good luck to you either way

Just because I want to propose, does not mean I want to marry right away. I certainly won't be married before the time I am 25.

Mine is for the most part. She has a degree, but not a great job, but she has no debt. I have a good amount of debt from school, but I have a great job.

And I plan on using a pre-nup. Not that I plan on getting a divorce, but I saw first hand what my parents went through and I don't want to have such a situation on my hands ever.

Not to be a downer, or an *******, but my help/opinion would be to not do it. You're young, I have no idea why young people would want to get married. 50% end in divorce, take your time - forever is a really long time.
