I was discussing this in another thread with Finrunner, who has also brought it up throughout the day and we thought it would be something worth discussing in it's own thread.
This could be the perfect time for Ryan Tannehill to become the locker room leader we desperately need. For him to stand up and say "look at what we've become nationally, let's go out and prove that's not who we are." There are silver linings to this mess and to me that is the biggest one. Joe Philbin has to be the one to overcome and fix this, but someone in that locker room needs to step up too and become the overwhelming leader of the players. No one better than the guy who we are hoping is our franchise quarterback.
Every player has to be held responsible for the things they say and do, but leadership within the locker room is certainly needed. The head coach can only control so much. The team needs someone they can go to and someone they can count on to help them when there are issues. With Incognito gone and Pouncey having his own problems, Tannehill needs to grab the team by it's balls (metaphorically speaking, of course) and lead them out of the quicksand. Together, they can rally and overcome, but a locker room leader needs to be born from this as well. Tannehill is the right guy for the job.

Exactly. It has to happen. It's a real breaking point for this team in its current state IMO. This team needs someone in that lockerroom to step up, and be the leader. It should be the QB of this team, the QB the team thinks, and hopes is the guy for the next 10+ years. He needs to stand up, and demand change, demand better out of everyone, demand respect for one an another, demand that they work together to be a team playing for one another, supporting one another, not demoralizing one another based on seniority in the league. This lockerroom needs to represent a team, a family, a group of men working together to acheive a common goal, and that's to win football games, win a superbowl, but ultimately win the respect of each other, and their fans, and the opposition each and ever week. Demand better. Be better. Be leaders, not followers, be smart and respectful and dedicated to their craft, and to one another.

At this time, the right guy is Tannehill. He's a bit insulated from all that's mentioned above. Last year, when some of the mistreatment alleged by the Martins started (i.e. Big Weirdo, whatever Martin may have gone to Philbin with in the Spring, etc.), Tannehill was just a rookie, same as Martin, and he was having to carry the other QBs pads, and going thru his own, much more laid back, rites of passage. So it's not like he'd be the guy who might have stepped in last year. Most of this year's bullying, at least from the evidence so far, has been calls and texts, none of which Tannehill has been privy to, so he should be unscathed this year, too. All that kind of affords him the opportunity to be the one guy to stake his claim, by coming to the forefront for team interviews, publicly, as well as being a leader on the field, and leading in a way the decade-plus hopeful franchise quarterback should... both claiming and earning his place as the face of the Dolphins franchise, both now and for the foreseeable future. There'd never be another question as to whether he had won over the guys in the locker room, that would be forever taken care of for him, by his actions now.
From a selfish standpoint, it would probably also look good to Steve Ross, and even if he may not have the numbers of a Brady or Manning, come contract time, he'll have their leadership badge because he provided a rudder to a ship that had lost it way and seemed rudderless. He could basically name his price in negotiations.
I really hope to see Tannehill step forward, both in his game play and in how he handles the media through this whole episode. Plus, if he were to somehow, after all this, help rally the team and make a playoff push and get us in, what fan isn't going to love him? This is his time, or at least it needs to be. Step up, RT! We need you now! -
He was interviewed after the Cinci game, and he said all the right things about "team" and "coming together", and I think he'd say the right things now. He gets up every week and is learning as he goes on the press conferences. It doesn't have to be that much more to be a little more forceful and taking the forefront. At times, when anyone wants to do something a little more grand, we all have to step out of our comfort box. Tannehill absolutely can. He just needs to... now. -
Ill post this here too:
Maybe hes doing his job and preparing for Tampa Bays defense, down 2 olinemen, and he doesnt have time to get caught up in this ****? He may be leading the locker room behind closed doors, in the film room, and at practice (where it matters most)....getting worked up over stuff he cant control, and worrying about something that is for the phins PR, coach and owner to worry about is detrimental to his profession. He is the qb of a 4-4 team in the thick of the playoff hunt. I am glad to see he's not worried about this ****.Frumundah Finnatic likes this. -
Considering how he's played late in games when our backs were against the wall..... I really think this kid can respond well. We need to turn him loose, dudes playing with a ball and chain around his ankle, & being asked to make too many low % passes. Time to kick it into another gear, because this qb development marathon just became an 8 game sprint to save jobs.

We all know the answer/cure to this mess.

Agreed completely. Besides forcing this regime's hand on its political commitment to bad players, the best thing to come out of this mess would be Tannehill in complete control of the locker room and the team. Leadership is a QB's job, IMO.

Now is a good time for the 2013 Team to come together, THill is just a part of that team.
Kraken, after all of the incognito questions, asked reporters if anyone wanted to ask about the Bengals win, or the Tampa game...not a single question.
I suspect that is going to light a fire under the teams *** and we destroy Tampa
As for losing 2 OLmen, keep in mind this OL is the 2nd worst in the league behind JVille, any changes cannot possibly make things much worse -

Totally agree with the premise of this thread, let's hope Tannehill has the cajones to step in and lead this offense. Cam Wake should be, and IMO is, the defacto leader of the Defense.
I recently read where a number of players on both sides of the ball are not stepping up and putting in the weight room and film work and effort that leaders like Wake, Soliai and Tannehill are during the week. That should be a part of the agenda that also needs to be addressed too IMHO.
This team definitely needs some serious leadership, and everybody on that OL should be as I've said many times a band of brothers that has an us against the world mentality. And Ross being as wealthy as he is, has to know the power of team leadership, he had better step in and set this ship right, now. -

Great thread Rock..
Repost.Did you ever take into account that this was a über sensitive/ depressed suicidal tendency player that just couldn't take the normal amount if ribbing by friends and teammates, did you ever think that the rest of the team might come out and wanna prove that they are not that kind of team and that they shouldn't be generalized.?rafael likes this. -

Philbin has already come out and addressed the situation. In my opinion, Tannehill should also be a part of that public face. That doesn't mean he's out of practices, film room, or any other team functions having to miss any time. It's just one additional thing he handles because he is the team leader. After which, he goes and helps propel the team to 5-4, 6-4, etc. -
