Its a message to the team, and actually its better than speaking about it. After a certain point, talking about things doesn't work, you have to set the tone. And if the tone needs to be set via one of the better players and or leaders on the team then so be it. It needs to be done. It's old school and I haven't seen a coach willing to do it for a long time. The message is being sent, either you get it or you don't. Those that don't will be leaving.
Interesting..now that you mention it, sparano sure as hell didnt bench anyone...He took Cog out for a couple plays as well right?
