Thoughts on Wisconsin v Miami

My thoughts (in my blog that's linked in my sig) throughout the game. Let's hear yours too!
Wow! Stupid penalty. I knew it as soon as I saw it. Shield was going to the house anyways.
- Graig Cooper has really turned into a quality running back this year. He's taken the next step IMO. He's not doing so much thinking, more of reacting this year and it's really paid off. His vision still could get better but he's got great acceleration, he can stop on a dime and make a sharp cut and he's shown his versatility this year. A couple months ago I brought him up as a guy who could be a real, real sleeper for the late first round.
- Jacory Harris will be at worst a late first rounder once Whipple is done with him IMO. He's got a bit of a long delivery but it's not Byron Leftwich-like. He throws a quality deep ball and he's accurate. He just needs to be more disciplined in his decision making and he needs to do a better job of feeling the pressure from the blind side. He needs to work on passing the ball when pressured and in tight windows, as that's been an issue for him. He's had a lot of open wide receivers because of Whipple's multiple shallow crosses that he's implemented with LaRon Byrd and Leonard Hankerson.
- Ray Ray Armstrong with the special teams tackle. He played here locally. He's going to be a nice player hopefully. Lots of speed.
- Lots of it.
- What a disappointment Demarcus Van Dyke has been.
- Gabe Carimi, when he comes out, is going to be a high pick. I'll have more on him later.
- Great play by Colin McCarthy at 13.12 in the first. He's quietly a solid player for Miami and is going to be an interesting guy to monitor. He's had a ton of injuries but definitely talented.
- Good hands and route by Garrett Graham. He did a nice job planting his inside foot and turning back outside for the catch. He created a small bit of separation on the play and it was just enough. Caught it with his hands, which is important.
- Gabe Carimi down. Not good. Hope he's alright. That was an ugly injury.
- Allen Bailey is doing a very good job setting the edge thus far. He's playing strong side end and his strength is just overpowering. I absolutely love the guy. Very raw but very, very talented.
- There he goes! Outstanding bulrush. Reminds me of Brian Orakpo there. Sink your hips, keep your feet moving and power through.
- Great run Cooper. Fight through the tacklers.
- Orlando Franklin playing left tackle I believe.
- Cooper's last game? He's being used quite a bit in the game plan early.
- That was ugly by Franklin and a great use of quickness by Watt. Franklin struggled to move his feet laterally and mirror the end.
- Poor job by Garrett Graham on the goal line at 7.45 to wall off the end, Andrew Smith. If he clears that lane, they have a touchdown probably.
- Going back on the big reception, looks like Colin McCarthy had trail technique on the man out of the backfield and took too many steps forward to fill the gap if it was a run, leaving him behind the tailback. Sam Shields appeared to be playing zone. It also looks like Randy Phillips blew coverage over the top, as Garrett Graham an in and out move and drew Phillips back to the middle of the field, despite having Vaughn Telemaque there patrolling the middle already.
- Daryl Sharpton can really fly.
- Watt is making plays. That was piss poor pass protection by the tailback though.
- Franklin fired out high on that 3rd and 8 and then bent at his waist. By the time he did all that, Shofield ran right by him.
- Brandon Harris reminds me some of Joe Haden.
- Garrett Graham isn't impressing as a blocker right now. On that screen, in space Graham allowed Daryl Sharpton to shed the block and make the play.
- Very nice catch by Jimmy Graham. That's the indefensible pass/catch, which will surely raise his stock because he can run, he can catch and he can get up there. He's also athletic and a former basketball player, which is what NFL teams look for now.
- Orlando Franklin is being shuffled around, at left and right tackle early in the first.
- Jacory Harris afraid of contact?
- O'Brien Shofield is really quick off the edge for Wisconsin. He's rotated at strong side and weak side tonight and he's applied pressure. I believe each time Harris has scrambled out of the pocket, it's been because of Shoefield. Keep an eye on him.
- Harris doesn't look good when pressured, which is a concern I stated earlier.
- On that fourth down, Jimmy Graham showed why he's so raw and needs work. He did a very poor job selling that in route. No use of his shoulders and eyes or his feet. Just rolled that route and the linebacker was just trailing him all the way.
- O'Brien Shofield was raising hell again off the edge on that fourth down, by the way.
- Great job by Tolzien staying in there to take the lick and deliver the pass. I like that.
- Nice middle screen to Garrett Graham there at 8.30 I believe. That was a nice job of picking up YAC.
- Garrett Graham pushed his assignment right but the pass rusher spun out of it. However, it was enough to get Clay in. Also, nice lead block there I believe.
- Speed cut by Graham there but he did enough to sell it with his footwork. Good catch with his hands too.
- What a block by Graham on the left flat! Drove Watt to the sideline.
- Graig Cooper staying inside for pass protection to help Pipho out. Not a bad job on the small chip.
- Harris has to hit that throw to Javarris James, who's been another slight disappointment. Talented but weak ankles and has had injuries, not to mention inconsistency.
- Vaughn Telemaque is a quality in the box safety IMO. He just struggles in coverage but he's young. He's tall in his backpedal but he squares his shoulders all the way through, which I like. He just has to be quicker and more disciplined.
- Quite a few crossing routes tonight from Nebraska. Toon earlier, Graham once IIRC, Toon again and another guy to the flat.
- Nice job by Sharpton dropping down the pipe, disrupting Tolzien's passing lane and target to Garrett Graham.
- Speaking of Sharpton, he's not looking bad tonight. Quick changing directions tonight, not bad in coverage and he's aggressive, showing toughness. He's fighting off blocks from ends and inline blockers. He's undersized but talented.
- At 1.45, Carimi's got to get his hands up quicker off his hips. He was bulrushed intot he backfield.
- Better job next play down. Does a good job hand fighting, getting off the line and mirroring.
- Great play by Brandon Harris to break up the pass.
- Going back to Carimi, he's a very strong run blocker and he's been an integral part in John Clay's success. He's not as strong in the pass blocking department but he's also becoming good there. He is going to go pretty high when he comes out IMO but that's the key, if he comes out. I know Wisconsin coaches are doing everything they can to keep him at Wisconsin.
- Oh man. Cooper injured. That was ugly. Hope he's alright. Good to see him being helped up early, especially by Damien Barry. That's a teammate.
- Start of the second half thoughts!
- Nice job in pursuit by Allen Bailey.
- Carimi is struggling tonight. The injury his bothering him too.
- GREAT job sniffing out the screen by Sharpton. Beautiful play.
- 44 just blew by Orlando Franklin at LT. Franklin picked up the interior lineman instead of the blitzer. Looked like Harris had Graham sitting underneath wide open. Harris seems to be locked in on his targets often but he has misfired this game.
- That's wrong but it's his first game at LT so we'll let him slide.
- Great open field tackle by Brandon Harris around the 8 min mark in the third. Dragged down the pass catcher.
- What a throw.
- Good to see Tommy Streeter in the game. He's got A LOT of POTENTIAL. I think he's 6'5" and can fly in the 4.4's.
- Nice job by Franklin on that play too. Did a good job riding the end wide and out of the pocket.
- The Badgers have done a real nice job playing the run tonight.
- Nice job Graham catching the pass before the fourth down. Caught it, trapped it and held on tight.
- Never thought I'd see too high of a pass for Graham lol.
- Miami is late on every ball and is getting carved up by the tight ends tonight. Man that's bad.
- Great closing by Sharpton there. No one got a hand on him.
- FANTASTIC play by Brandon Harris. That's why he's so damn good at times and he has a great future. All-American play. Carved up by the tight ends but great, great play.
- The tight ends are still doing it big against the U. Miami is making progress but they've still got work to do to get back to the top. The linebacker recruits thus far have been mostly flops, sans Sean Spence.
- Wisconsin came to play tonight!
- Is Damien Berry Miami's best back?
- According to NFL Scouts, yep.
- According to me? Pretty close.
- Looks like Berry fell hard on his left hip. Hope he's alright. Miami is getting banged up tonight.
- JJ Watt is having a helluva game tonight.
- As is Schofield.
- Can't say the same for Miami's line.
- Jason Fox is greatly missed.
- Orlando Franklin is not playing that bad though. Problem is, the rest of the line is playing like ****. Pocket is collapsing from interior and exterior.
- At 5.37, Bailey doesn't play with leverage but is strong enough to set the edge. Wow.
- Imagine when he learns to play with technique and leverage.
- At 3.30, looks like Orlando Franklin learned from his earlier mess up. Wisconsin stunted their pass rushers and he went toward the end crossing his face but went back out to the tackle. Good job there.
- Schofield is having one helluva night. Looked good dropping and pursuing. Very intriguing player.
- Obvious that Franklin is top heavy. Struggled getting out to the sideline on that screen pass at around the three minute mark.
- WHAT A GRAB BY HANKERSON!
- Wow.
- What. A. Catch.
- Nice drive led by Harris to close the game. Making some good throws. Albeit high but good throws.
- First Travis Benjamin sighting at 1.38 for me. Damn. Kinda surprising.
- Very nice throw by Harris to Thorean Collier for the touchdown.
- Helluva onside kick by Bosher.
- Harris struggles under pressure, which is a bit surprising since he's so calm but he's also never really been pressured.
- Collier HAS to make that catch. Tough catch and a poor throw I know but still, you have to catch that.
- Wisconsin is a quality team and congratulations to them. Miami's still got some growing up to do but they are getting there.

Jacory Harris. I don't know what to say. It's like he's completely lost his confidence and swagger. I really hope it's the thumb, and I really think it is. There is no question, IMO, that he's been playing in some serious pain ever since the injury. I'm still hopeful of his future. He's going to be a lot better next year. He's no slouch. He's no punk bitch like Robert Marve. He's not going to run away from his problems and cry like a little girl. He'll beat himself up pretty good after this one and vow to get better. You'll see. Most of that beating will be undeserved, because we got nothing out of the running game and J12 had a DE or LB in his face before a WR could break in and out of their routes on almost every play. When he had time, he made plays. I hate to mention one play that could have been... but think back to the third down play in Wisconsin territory with the game notted at 7; Jacory makes a perfect throw on the left end to Byrd which would have been an easy 15-20 yard gain, and Thearon Collier decides to show DeMarcus Van Dyke how it's done and play some defense... oh boy. That play could have been 6 with one football move by Byrd. If not, then the drive keeps rolling. We're in FG range to say the least. BTW if that was Ted Ginn in place of Thearon Collier on the 4th down pass, poorly thrown or not (still catchable), he'd be getting ripped to shreds on this forum. That is the sad truth of the favortism some of you guys play. Anyway, I'm still riding with you J12. I've got all the faith in the world that he'll be two notches up next year, and two more in 2011. THIS IS A FIRST YEAR STARTER PEOPLE.
Randy Shannon. I love Randy Shannon, I really do. I think he's a great guy who has overcome so much. I can't ever root against a guy like Randy Shannon and there's a lot of sentiment there, but I've got to keep it real on behalf of this football program; RANDY SHANNON IS NOT THE MAN FOR THIS JOB. If you're looking for a guy to keep this program in the top 15-25 range for the next 5-8 years, then he's probably the guy (and sadly I think that's what Shalala is looking for as long as our players are doing well in school, the dumb broad...). If you're looking for someone to take this program to the next level, then he simply is not that guy. I mean, really, what has he done? 5-7, OK, Larry Coker's mess. 7-5 improvement with a bowl loss to a mid-level Pac-10 team. 9-3 improvement with a bowl loss to a mid-level Big Ten team. What's next? Maybe we can move up to 10-2 with a bowl loss to a mid-level SEC team? Oh yeah, that's a major improvement. I'll be willing to give Shannon one more season to win the ACC or at least get an at-large BCS bid. I don't see it happening with next year's even tougher schedule (look, if we can't keep up with Wisconsin on a neutral ground, then Ohio State is going to tear us a new one at the Horseshoe), but I'm hopeful. If not, then changes need to be made. I'd love to offer Shannon the opportunity to step down as DC and bring TOMMY TUBERVILLE in here. Tuberville is natural Miami folk (DC under Jimmy Johnson and Erickson from 86-93). Most impressively on his resume, he's got an SEC title under his belt with Auburn in 2004 going a perfect 13-0 with a BCS bowl victory. I have no doubts that this guy would completely dominate the ACC. He can recruit, coach, and he's got all the connections in the world. Shannon can recruit, that's it. Hopefully he doesn't land a job this year... he's already stated he had enough fun time with the wife and he's ready to get back into it. This is MY GUY. I want him here tomorrow, but I'll take him in 2011 if Shannon doesn't get it together next year. I sense a 4-5 year extension for Shannon, but only for the recruiting base to show some stability. This fan base will force him out like we did with Coker if we're playing in Champs Sports, Chick-Fil-A, Car Care, Music City, or Emerald Bowl next year... and I'll gladly lead the charge.
Mark Whipple. With all the rumors swirling around that Whipple may take a head coaching job elsewhere, he sure mailed it in tonight. I'm an on and off fan of "Whipple Ball" but it sure would suck for Jacory Harris to go through three offensive coordinators in three years, man, so I'm moot on this one. Don't know if I want him to stay or go. Guess I don't really care. BTW - is Whipple married? Does he have a daughter? One has to guess that Damien Berry has slept with one or the other... I mean, seriously... what a joke. What does this guy have to do to become THE feature back?
Graig Cooper. Had to give him his own little piece. He's our spark. Our big play guy. Nothing negative to say. I just wanted to wish him well on his recovery from what looked like a pretty nasty injury. Ah, man. Get well soon, Coop. Probably lost his chances to head Pro this year. Depending on how serious the injury is, he may need to redshirt and play his senior season in 2011. Hate to see something so unfortunate happen to a guy like Coop in the very last game of the season. It sucks but what can you do. Hopefully he's got the good luck injury bug of previous tailbacks... Gore and McGahee. Really think he's got a career in the NFL.
The Last Ditch Effort. This is why I hate my favorite sports teams this season. Heartbreak Dolphins and Heartbreak Canes. Neither team can just roll over and die, and while that's usually something to love about a team... I hate it! I think I was cooler with the Virginia Tech loss than this one and the UNC game where we kept coming back, letting up, coming back, letting up. They always have to play with my emotions man. Dead in the water from start to finish, then they make this miraculous push where every chip falls into play perfectly, and boom, the opportunity is there and it's not taken. Man, ****. We all deserve championships from both of these organizations within the next 2-3 seasons for this crap!
Other Notes:
- Why on earth did we leave the Big East?
- Olivier Vernon is going to be a first round pick in three or four years. No Eric Moncur type flopping with this one. Bet your bottom dollar.
- A major Tommy Steeter sighting in this game! If he can improve this Spring... O'Boy.
- What has Mike James done to hold onto that kick return job all year? We've got so much speed and explosiveness on this football team. Why not Sam Shields? Why not Benjamin? Why not Thompkins? Why not anyone else but Mike James? Don't get it.
- Where the hell was Aldarius Johnson?
- Where the hell was Travis Benjamin?
- Why did Jacory Harris attempt 29 passes with only two, yes, two sent into Hankerson's direction? I guess we game planned away from him so we could have him for another year. *rolls eyes*
- Coop / Berry / James = 13 total carries. Good stuff, Whipple.
- Thank God Javarris James played his last game as a Miami Hurricane. If not for his cousin, I don't think we'd of ever known of his existence. What a disappointment after such a strong freshman season. The fact that he continues to get more reps than Damien Berry is disturbing, and played a key factor into ANOTHER loss. Every time we lose this is a major cause. And how many of our victories did we not get it going until Berry took the load (pause)?
- On that note, why did Damien Berry only get 4 carries? What the hell type of film did our retarded coaching staff been watch on our tailbacks heading into the game plan, a nephew of Mark Whipple's NCAA 10 dynasty? Berry is by far the best runner we've got and it's been evident the entire season. Oh, let me guess: Not fast enough? Oh yeah, that's right. Berry did contribute that quote about his preference in running over you rather than running around you. That type of mentality simply didn't fit into our wonderful game plan. We're going to out run Wisconsin because we've got the speed of the ACC and they've got the power and lack of speed of the Big Ten. **** you, Mark Whipple. **** you. You're a joke.
- Sharpton and McCarthy are Grade A garbage. Can't cover a RB. Can't cover a TE. Can't tackle. Can't execute properly. Never where they are supposed to be on the field. I tell you, Arthur Brown better step it up next year. Also, I love Sean Spence but he's no full time linebacker and that's NOT his fault. This LB group as a whole is trash. Can't remember the last time I've ever said that about a Miami Hurricanes team. This is South Florida, damnit. These kids come a dime a dozen. Go out and get 'em. Stop overly pursuing possession receivers! We have 5-6 of them and they're all returning!
- DeMarcus Van Dyke should be 5th on the depth chart next year. I'm tired of seeing this buffoon get beat for a first down, make a big hit on the same play, and celebrate the hit after giving up a first down. This guy is an idiot and I'm glad people are spamming his Twitter account. Brandon McGee is going to show you how it should be done next year, ass. Oh, that's IF Shannon gives him a chance. You know how he is when it comes to playing underclassmen over upper. He'd rather lose with experience than take a shot with something else. That's evident.
- Ray Ray Armstrong isn't ready yet and he's going to take a beating by the media, but I have no doubts he's going to be a stud. Just wanted to throw that out there. Armstrong / Telemaque will be a lethal combo.
- Safety talk? Oh yeah, Randy Phillips sucks. Good riddance, senior. You won't be missed. I look forward to seeing you on Sundays making a special teams tackle or two... that's if you're not completely knocked down
- Next year we're going to need a sleeper or two to completely bust loose; all eyes on Lamar Miller.BTW - if Franklin is protecting J12's blindside next season... I am not even going to attempt to watch this offense try and "execute" @Ohio State, @Georgia Tech, @Pittsburgh, vs. Virginia Tech, and vs. North Carolina. We are a lock to lose at least three of those games. Maybe four or all five.
In closing, RETIRE MATT BOSHER's JERSEY WHEN HE LEAVES. I ****ing love this guy! Don't know if this is a good or bad thing, but he's the best and most reliable football play this program has had in quite some time... YIKES. I guess the "YIKES" part answers whether or not that's a good or bad thing.

1. We didn't have the O-line to protect Jacory Harris long enough to do much with the ball.
2. We didn't have the D-line to stop the Wisconsin qb from throwing the ball.
3. We got manhandled in more ways than one, in pass coverage, and stopping the running game. More of them stopping ours.
4. We had way too many penalties.
5. The field was an absolute mess.
None of these reasons is an excuse as to why we lost the game, we should have been ready for any of these things. It didn't stop the Badgers. Wisconsin was the better team.
Regardless of if you were at the game, I saw the game on tv, with many different camera angles, so don't try the "I was there" cop out. It doesn't mean a damn thing. We got beat, plain and simple.
The season's over. We'll be back next year. The :theu: always comes back.:up:
